Emily Wells is an artistic enigma. The multi-faceted singer/songwriter incorporates classical instrumentation, soulful vocals and hip-hop production into her music, creating a striking contrast between hard and soft. A one woman show, Wells plays the violin, drums, guitar, analog synthesizers, beat machines, ukulele and cello - many of which she manages to juggle all during her live performances. Listen to her rich harmonies and arranging on "Take It Easy" Emily Wells - Take It Easy by St Mon Teruel [...]

Most indie blogs are still recovering from Lana Del Rey leading them astray on her "indie" promises, just to go major in the end. Well, in case your feeling heartbroken as well. Let me introduce you to Emily Wells. Mixing classical instrumentation with folk and hip-hop production, this young lady has the goods to make you forget anyone with the initials "LDR". Now signed to Partisan Records to release her album Mama , Wells is filling a void that we just need her to. Playing almost all of the instruments on the album, Wells [...]

Emily Wells - Passenger Emily Wells is a classically trained violinist whose penchant for hip-hop styled production has nabbed a brand new record deal from Partisan Records for her great ability to create hauntingly beautiful compositions using her voice, violin, synthesizers and loops to create a sort of orchestral sound that is pretty damn unique. Her track "Passenger," leaped out at me, its really something quite different and has a fantastic chilled out vibe. Her upcoming record, Mama , debuts on Partisan on April 10th. Upcoming [...]
EMILY WELLS, TIMMY STRAW ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) When considering New York-based Emily Wells, one cannot help but observe, in awe, the amount of sounds that can emit from one woman. Beginning as a classically trained violinist, Wells merges perfectly the well-groomed nuances of symphonic grandeur with the undeniably carnal, primal pulse of heavy hiphop beats, in cooperation with whatever other devices might exist to help her achieve looped sonic bliss. Wells' relatively quiet internet presence depicts her as blurry and enigmatic. Not to mention the scant recordings; she has only three official [...]

This is Emily Wells and she is cooler than you'll ever be. She is a classically trained violinist with a penchant for hip hop production. Beat that. Emily Wells - "Take it Easy SF" Emily Wells - "Juicy (Notorious B.I.G. cover)" — Melon
I heard of Emily Wells just the other day after randomly talking about song covers with my roommate. Emily Wells who is a violinist/singer out of Texas is known for her merge of hip hop and classical and her use of less common instruments to create her unique sounding loops. After giving this song a listen I was won over by her unique cover of Juicy by the one and only Notorious B.I.G. The cover possesses dark sounding vocals from Wells over the top of an ominous sounding violin track and a simple thumping beat. Definitely give it a listen, [...]

Conner Youngblood - Monsters ( mp3 ) Electro decks, meet the banjo. Banjo, meet the electro decks. I know, I know what you're both thinking - how would I ever work with that ?? But trust me, you're going to, and it's going to be beautiful: fearful, fuzzy, scuzzy and severely, hand-clenchingly catchy: odd bedfellows in the musical romance of the year. Because I am Connor Youngblood, I am a freaking genuius and I say so. Now - let's go to work... [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry [...]
Last weeks show at the Triple Door featuring artists Anomie Belle and Emily Wells was a fantastic pairing; both amazing female multi-instrumentalists, violinists, and electronic producers with different styles (trip hop versus hip hop would be a real narrow comparison as they are both eclectic). . Seattle musician Anomie Belle, fit perfectly in the dark, candle lit room of the Triple Door. Anomie's trip-hop style, downtempo eletronic music, was at its best when deep and darker, as her voice goes low and is perfectly shadowed by the heavy bass; this was very moving in the cold [...]
Emily Wells is a cool chick. And mad talented. With an intensive production style based on the layering and looping of gobs (yes, gobs) of tracks, Wells creates lush, modern, moody symphonies assembled from violin tracks layered with hip-hop beats and Wells' ethereal, haunting voice. You can hear it all on her album The Symphonies: Dreams, Memories & Parties . Calling from the back of a tour van near Portland, Wells tells Stranger Dance about performing, writing and pillow fighting with Dan the Automator . Wells plays San Francisco on April 25 at [...]

It's always great when artists or bands can take an already great song and really make it their own. Below are some of my favorite covers. These covers are all amazing, but my two favorites are the Emily Wells cover of "Juicy" which I wrote about in a previous post and much to my surprise the Solange cover of "Stillness is the Move." Hope you enjoy! Bat for Lashes – Kings of Leon-Use Somebody Lady Gaga-Coldplay-Viva La Vida Velvet Underground-Rolling [...]
Let me tell you about Emily Wells . The first time I saw Ms. Wells I was at the Bowery Poetry Club for Amber Tamblyn's book release party. Emily came on stage and blew me away with by far the best cover of Biggie's "Juicy" I have ever heard. I knew I needed to see her perform again asap so the next night I headed to City Winery in Tribeca to catch her show where she played an amazing set with all original compositions. Trust, this girl it the definition of talent. Wells, started playing violin when [...]

All Photos By Victoria Smith For those unfamiliar with Emily Wells (listen to her hear), she is a classically trained violinist whose passion for classical music is equaled with her passion for hip hop. Her songs are built upon layers of loops of kids' toy instruments (tiny pianos, and small xylophones), a violin, vocal effects, a bass, and drums. During her live set she is typically accompanied by her drummer, Sam Halerman and bassist, Joey Reina. Her styles range in comparisons from... Read more at www.SFCritic.com

Alright so here it goes. I respect Kanye as a producer. I like his first two albums. I think Graduation was all for the money and 808 and the CrapTastics isn't even musik. However Learning that Kanye knows the art of sampling and does it well makes me rethink my position on him. I love it when rappers sample songs; hence the reason I love 80s and 90s hip hop. Check this out and let me know what you think. If Kanye did a show with a DJ and all records and used [...]
Vivaldi Meets Hip-Hop. I stumbled upon Emily Wells as the opening act for Joseph Arthur at Tribeca s new music venue City Winery. She took the stage seeming like some brainy, violin toting grad-student-in-black and then proceeded to completely blow me aw ...
