With due respect to Saint Valentine, the upcoming lovey-dovey holiday gave us an excuse to do what we should've done by now anyway - compile the TOP 100 EMO ANTHEMS OF ALL TIME. Over the last three... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

Despite suffering debasement from low-quality acts and living as a cultural punchline, emo has persevered as a legitimate sub-genre. Songwriters like Jesse Lacey , Patrick Stickles , Max Bemis and David Bazan have managed to preserve the essence of intelligence, self-awareness and honesty that has defined the genre as far back as Minor Threat, while still progressing the sounds in their own ways. After an explosion in popularity (and an equal and opposite backlash) in the late 90s and early Aughts, great emo records are certainly harder to find than they were 20, or [...]

I don't know if I've ever heard/seen more debates over an artist than there have been with Sonny Moore. The man's explosion onto the EDM scene just over one year ago took everyone by surprise. Practically overnight, he went from being a niche-scene unknown into an ambassador of EDM with 8 of Beatport's top 10 slots all to himself for a at least a few weeks. I'm pretty sure that's never happened before. So this must have some significance, right? I mean we, the music-listening community, are the ones who gave Sonny his throne. Why has his music [...]

The new album from Cloud Nothings, Attack on Memory , was one of the first in 2012 to make some serious waves. Right now it has everyone talking, and what they're talking a lot about is the return of emo. Now, if you're anything like me, you might hear the word "emo," and run for the hills. The genre may or may not bring back bad memories of those annoying kids from your high school, gathered in a pack outside the cafeteria, listening to those whiny bands who played on the radio and wore a lot of eyeliner (but [...]
Here's a track off the latest album from SanFran screamo and hardcore outfit Loma Prieta. Their new album is titled I.V. , and it's on Deathwish . On "Fly By Night" Loma proves itself to be just as harsh and aggressive as any other band in this style. The vocals and guitars are extremely loud and kind of brittle in texture. It's something I probably wouldn't be into if the drums didn't have so much punch to them. The bass has a really grinding quality to it as well. Despite all this "ugly," the [...]

Tweet The amount of Rock records has been decreasing at a surprisingly steep pace in the past 10 years, as many bands have begun to embrace untechnical rhythms, hazy vocals, and instruments laced in reverb. The resultant change birthed several great bands (Japandroids, Cymbals Eat Guitars) and hundreds of horrible ones (practically all the rest). From somewhere in the middle of those camps came Cloud Nothings' debut album last year. Dylan Baldi, a student at Case Western Reserve University, began Cloud [...]

Date Wednesday, Feb 1st Location Emos Doors 700 pm Tickets $14 from Frontgate If you're looking for a show to take you back in time, all the way back to the late 90s Emo scene, then perhaps this is where you'll need to be. I can't vouch for some of the singers doing their solo gig, but I hear they were a big [...]

I'm not sure what the indie community thinks of Say Anything. I'm more inclined to group them with the emo movement of the early '00s. On March 13th, Say Anything will release their fourth studio album, Anarchy, My Dear , through Equal Vision Records. The new album was produced by Tim O'Heir (Say Anything, Sebadoh, Superdrag). As Say Anything front-man Max Bemis affirms, the new album deals with Bemis' love for anarchy. Read more »

I Fine Before You Came sono forti.
Finally out for streaming and downloading (free!), the debut track from Silent Drape Runners,...

There was this soft and glorious era, sometime in the early noughties, when coloured leaves leapt and danced in flurries on breezy gusts across our Converse'd feet. Real responsibility was in short supply, but hormones did a great job at filling the space. Taking Back Sunday were still incredible. Minus the Bear were the height of sophistication in rock music. Things meant a lot. There was a boom, and there was a bust, like anything else. And now that the dust has long settled, it's about time to go tomb raidin'. Turns out the [...]

I remember my first time like it was yesterday. It was the summer of 1999 when it all went down. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut had just been released and I already celebrated my birthday a few weeks prior. This was about the same time I moved into a new city and started getting an allowance. After saving up three weeks allowance at $5 a week I had enough money to buy my very first CD, Enema of the State by Blink 182 . I was definitely the last of all my [...]

The original Emo's is closing. Yes, we have mentioned it before, but it is real now. Seemed so far away when we shared our best Emo's moments . OBN IIIs headlined a punk show a couple nights ago. Nathan and I went to send off the Alternative Lounge in style as so many familiar faces filled the crowd. Wiccans and Video opened, but my punk-show dollars are going to OBN IIIs right now. Fun. Head past for plenty of pics [...]

Reading ON&ON's list from yesterday got me thinking. Stayed up late last night with just a lonely glass of red wine and some scented candles listening to this song on repeat and just thinking about blgging and tumblrng and Skrillex memes and sensitive innanet thugz and digi-emo swag rap. Thought about how Chris Faraone sounds like a tweed jacket high school English teacher who likes to go home at night, get high and write things in his Moleskin like [...]
