End of the Decade: bits & bobs celebrating the 2000s (Noughties?)

Linkin Park are the biggest selling band of this decade, nay, century. That's a statement that really hurts, isn't it. They've sold more records than Metallica, Iron Maiden or even The Beatles. Yes, feel free to weep because there doesn't seem like much to celebrate. Right? WRONG! There really have been some amazing bands, albums and [...]

Band of the Decade: Killswitch Engage

Killswitch Engage Peak: 2004 Era: The End Of Heartache What have Killswitch Engage done in the 2000s? Their 30 minute-long self-titled 2000 debut was released through Ferret and has lately been referred to as more of an EP by Howard Jones. At the time, however, it was simply a blistering assault of melodic/harsh vocals and duelling dual guitars that were more akin to the Gothenburg school of metal than anything distinctly American. 2002's [...]

Band of the Decade: Alkaline Trio

Alkaline Trio - "Private Eye" (Live) Vagrant Records
Alkaline Trio Peak: Crimson Era: 2005 What have Alkaline Trio done in the 2000s? After 1998's Goddamnit debut and the rough-round-the-edges, anthem-filled 2000 follow-up, Maybe I'll Catch Fire , Alkaline Trio got close to the mainstream in 2001 with From Here To Infirmary released through Vagrant. This sincere collection of dark, relationship-fuelled slabs of hilariously downtrodden poetry spawned two UK "hit" singles in 'Stupid Kid' (#53) and [...]

We've asked him to summarise the ten years since then in all things metal in a handy A to Z S layer No Slayer, no thrash. Right? Following their four classic '80s albums, Slayer's four '90s albums received a varied reception as the band branched out in style. During this last decade, Slayer have succeeded in cementing [...]

Fall Out Boy Peak: 2005 Era: From Under The Cork Tree What Have Fall Out Boy done in the 2000s? After a couple of independent releases in 2003, Fall Out Boy signed to Island, or one of its subsidiaries, in 2005 and decided to go supernova. When From Under The Cork Tree went double platinum, it was clear that they had put pop punk back in the mainstream. Not only [...]

From: New Jersey, US Sounds like: Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday, Far Website: www.MySpace.com/LastDaysOfEmpi re Thrash Hits verdict: There seems to be an awful lot going on in New Jersey right now - not only did we stumble across the hardcore rock'n'roll of Chambers , but now we can also add the post-hardcore soundscapes of Last Days of Empire to our 2009 discovery-list. We pinned down LDoE vocalist/guitarist, Michael Depho, to fill us in. -- How did you [...]

Converge - Fault And Fracture
Converge Peak: 2001 Era: Jane Doe What have Converge done in the 2000s? While Converge had been around since the early 90s, it wasn't until the genre-busting, nay genre- breaking Jane Doe (2001) that the Massachusetts four-piece shook the world of rock to its very foundations. Terrorizer Magazine recognized its greatness from the off, naming it their Album of the Year. To this day it remains not only the yardstick [...]

Deftones - Change (In the house of Flies) [HD]
Deftones Peak: 2000/2001 Era: White Pony What have Deftones done in the 2000s? After consolidating their position as the thinking man's alternative metal band with the chugging nu-metal of Adrenaline (1995) and the restrained, groovy vitriol of Around The Fur (1997) on Madonna's Maverick label, they released their third album, White Pony in 2000. Chino Moreno was also working on Team Sleep at that time, lending to a [...]

Just Wondering

We're a few months away from the end of the decade, which I'm sure means a LOT of end-of-decade lists should start appearing soon (on sites apart from Pitchfork ). Off the top of my head, I would probably include records by Radiohead , System of a Down , Yeah Yeah Yeahs , M.I.A. , Kanye West (despite his being a gigantic tit) and Animal Collective on my list. What would you include on yours?

barefoot in the head

barefoot in the head it's getting towards the end of the decade again...yikes. i can remember this feeling ten years ago. that 'shit, was that the 90s?' feeling. even though i started the 90s as a child, it seemed like it went too fast. i'm not looking forward to all those shows and compilations to start appearing, showcasing the 00s. anyway, to combat this feeling that time is running away with us, rewind to the early 90s. pretend it was all a dream, like bobby in dallas. and if you're old enough to know what the hell [...]
