Time to take all you young whippersnappers to school and give some ageing b-boys out there a much needed flashback to hip-hop's better days. Ok so maybe that last bit is a matter of personal opinion but it's undeniable that the ' Golden Era ' of hip hop did yield some legitimate hits that have stood the test of time. What is also true is that these records weren't made with laptops and iPods in mind. So grow a set, take off your headphones, plug in your speakers and play them LOUD: Its got [...]
Your favorite rappers favorite rapper Rakim, shares his favorite verse while on tour in London. Peep the entire track below.

Rakim played in Glasgow this week and got me thinking about this week's classic. During the hip hop golden age. Eric B and Rakim were regarded as being at the top of the tree for the genre. This DJ/MC combo had an unparalleled chemistry and were seen as innovators of the genre. Who better to remix them than Ninja Tune founders and original remixers Coldcut . The song speaks for itself! Paid In Full - Eric B. & Rakim (The [...]

By Josh Bowles - There's Hip Hop and there's "Hip Hop". The East and West coasts of America are undoubtedly the two historical powerhouses and they fall into this second category. It is well accepted that Hip Hop originated in New York City during the 1970s with lyrical dexterity that differs from all other old school Hip Hop. This original foundation can still be heard through the beats produced by the likes of Jay-Z, which have a tendency to focus on lyrics above all else. Notably, [...]
Oh yeah… me and MM are enjoying a glass of the special stuff tonight. And we've waited a bit for this. In the last two or three years, I've come across a few genetic mutations of female adult vermin of a highly toxic strain. But guess what? Tonight, at least, a little justice has been done. They've gone where the goblins go, below… Well not really, but figuratively. So tonight's music selections are with this in mind. I tell you, you cannot imagine what this means. A strike back for the small person. The pen is mightier than [...]

Two legendary MCs hook up here (Is Black Thought in the legend conversation? We think so.) with an assist from some other dude with Legend in his name. In prepping this post, I spun Eric B. and Rakim's "In the Ghetto" a few times this afternoon. It's crazy how fresh it still sounds. Track is 20 years old. J.Period, who helmed this remake, absolutely does the original justice. The addition of electric pianos give the song a certain new depth and fit the vocal stylings of the track's new personnel quite well (Black Thought & John Legend). Legend, really stands [...]

Hometown Heroes own Jon Lorenzo breaks from behind the cobwebs to give us a super energetic fully charged mix that is guaranteed to keep you moving & grooving from the beginning to the end. Upbeat rap & oldschool music you don't normally hear mixed together. Unreleased (extended) version of my hip hop/electro mix from January 2009. Applications used: ProTools and Serat o I'll say! He even threw yours truly on there rockin over the [...]

Its always refreshing to know that no matter how weird of a thought I have - someone else has had the same idea and written about it on the internet. Not that off shore bank accounts are weird by any means, and thats not even what I was thinking about when I wrote that first sentence; but now that I'm thinking about it, I might as well try and figure out how to shield my $22 in liquid assets from my government's greedy spoiled-child-like entitlement. Nothing signals the beginning of snowboard than the sweet sweet basslines [...]
In 1972, rock band Mountain released a live album that opened with drummer Corky Laing dropping the beat to "Long Red" and frontman Leslie West goading the crowd: "Are you out there? Louder! Well, clap your hands to what he's doin'. On tempo, Jack! Yeah!"The constituent pieces of those 22 seconds have gone on to be sampled in at least 50 hip-hop tracks in the time since, some of which are

This one, right here , this was my dream... my wish. And it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back. I'm taking them all back. I don't really read music blogs anymore, do you? Seriously. Here's all I frequent anymore: BrooklynVegan and Largehearted Boy . Strange that, since a ton of the posts on BrooklynVegan are recycled press releases that I've likely received mere minutes before seeing them posted on the Veeg. Same goes for LHB too, with so much of the stuff on that site coming from the same Digg, [...]

If you'll do me the favor of thinking back a couple of weeks, you'll recollect I posted up a remixed cover version of Ice-T's classic "Colors." At that time I mentioned I would consider a post of the original if I still had the soundtrack. Well, friends, guess what? This is actually sort of a relevant time to post from this soundtrack, with the death last week of Dennis Hopper. Hopper, in case you've forgotten, directed the 1988 flick, which starred Robert Duvall and Sean Penn. Your basic plot summary, from IMDB [...]

" I Ain't [...]

I have to say, after back -to- back R.I.P. style OSM's, my main aim this week was simply to post songs by folks that were still alive. So while I was thinking about what to post, I saw George Clinton rocking out in the crowd during the Grammy Awards (you know, because my wife was watching it, not because I wanted to see teen-country-pop sensation Taylor Swift *swoon*), and since there likely isn't anyone still living that's been sampled more than George, it seemed like a perfect fit. Seriously, ole Uncle George is an [...]

It's weeks like this one that demonstrate why I do OSM on Mondays. Like most working stiffs, Sunday night finds me trying to shake off the effects of the weekend (having kids now makes that more like shake off the crumbs from the weekend), and get prepared to drag my carcass into work the next morning. Hence, prepping a post on Sunday night isn't something I'm always looking forward too, and some Sundays when I have nothing immediately coming to mind, I don't feel like doing one at all. But then I think of some song I [...]
