Today, that is Valentine's Day, Austin-via-Cincinnati's Heartless Bastards release their fourth album, Arrow . Press releases discuss the heavy personal writing process that guitarist/vocalist Erika Wennerstrom undertook, writing tracks on road trips stretching between a lake cabin in the Allegheny Mountains and a ranch in West Texas. Produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno and featuring the first recorded contributions from touring guitarist Mark Nathan, Arrow is like a new page in the Bastards' book. We had the opportunity to sit down with Wennerstrom to talk about her process, the new album, and more. [...]

New Video from the Studio Bands You Really Need to Know Already haven proven themselves time and again to be one of the best live acts out there, Heartless Bastards headed back into the studio for their new album , "Arrow" (which is really just great - I'll have the review closer [...]

I just listened to the song "Parted Ways" from Heartless Bastards upcoming album, The Arrow . This album is officially the one I'm most eagerly anticipating in 2012, but then again, Erika Wennerstrom could sing show tunes and I'd listen. Based solely on this track and the buffalo cover art, the band sounds a little less bluesy and a little more alt-country. Arrow is due out on Valentine's Day (that's February 14th) via Partisan Records. Parted Ways by Heartless Bastards [...]

On Further Review by Nick Parker Having just written a promotional piece advancing Lou Barlow 's show last week (and a review of his album last year for the matter), let me stop the hero worship for a minute and say something quite different about him this time around. I've seen him play so many times in the last fifteen years, but this time I [...]

As an aside, I'm writing this all while listening to a ton of old house and electronica. The antithesis to what I'll be posting, today. In fact, since I can't find a good audio program on the cheap to rip all my old vinyl, I've resorted to digging around youtube to find some of it. What am I listening to right now? That seriously could be the best choon Armand did on the remix tip. No joke. That's just some filthy disco goodness. Nice use of low and hi-pass filters to tease [...]

I like surprise. Presents when I come home. Finding twenty dollars in the pocket of a unworn coat. You know, the little things. Thus, when word that Alex Maas, the drone-y yaller from The Black Angels, and Erika Wennerstrom, the throaty holler of Heartless Bastards, were putting together a few tracks, I was nicely surprised. The [...]

Heartless Bastards turned quite a few heads this year at SXSW , and the indie rock band will get the chance to play to even more people across the land via a North American tour. The Austin-based quartet, fronted by feisty vocalist Erika Wennerstrom, will be busy this summer, touring through August as support for some of the music biz's heavy hitters - including Jenny Lewis , Andrew Bird , and the Decemberists . They are also scheduled to appear at several festivals, including the Philadelphia Folk Festival on August 15 and San Francisco's Outside [...]
Heartless Bastards - The Mountain Ohio-based trio combine the grit of grunge guitar with a howling lap steel, aided by a rythm section that has rejuvinated the sound band were known for on their first two albums. It's just the right side of rootsy, culminating in a satisfying crescendo which should be followed up a watch of the band performing 'Out at Sea' live on Letterman (below). Buy MySpace [...]

Maxwell's in Hoboken is one of my favorite Jersey venues by virtue of the fact that it doesn't really belong in Hoboken, aka "land of the yuppie broseph stock broker and assorted Abercrombie & Fitch models." It's like a Lower East Side venue that took a wrong turn in the Lincoln Tunnel and wound up right outside the N-Y-C and in the Jerz. Maybe that's why I like it so much and it's pretty much the only reason I enjoy going to the "Ho-bro-ken," except to visit a few equally misplaced friends who live there. Sure, Maxwell's reeks of PBR and some of the [...]

There's been a lot of love for the Heartless Bastards around here lately, and for good reason. With apologies to Merriweather -something-or-other, The Mountain - Heartless Bastard's third-full length album (out now on Fat Possum) - might just be the best thing I've heard so far this year (he says 7 weeks into 2009). Hyperbole aside, their live show is also a sight to behold, a pummeling shakedown of all that is good and holy about rock music that soars on the magic of Erika Wennerstrom's fantastic voice. In other words, there's a [...]

HUNGRY FOR GREAT? The Heartless Bastards (RSL Top Three American Live Bands in 2009) are well on their way to becoming many people's picks as artist of the year right now. Having released the absolutely must-have new album, The Mountain , ( review - recommended !) back in January, the Heartless Bastards are selling out shows left and right these days. And, they are about to take Austin's SxSW Music Festival (dates below!) by storm. [...]

A new soundman every night. The members of Hoots and Hellmouth are drinking away the stress of the van ride from Philadelphia, preparing to take the stage at any moment as snow continues to pile up outside when Sean Hoots, one fourth of Hoots and Hellmouth and one third of its vocal harmony, tells me about the interesting sensation of baring one's sound (and soul) every night, not just once but twice. Once being to an audience obviously, but before that, before the audience even arrives, you have to do it for an audience of one, an [...]
Since the album hit our doorstep, I can't stop listening to Heartless Bastard's [Myspace] The Mountain. It is pretty damn good, so when their team hit me up to say "Hey Shawn, here's some footage from ACL 2008 that you might like," I wasn't going to pass up the chance to talk about [...] [[ This is a content summary only.
