We owe the rise of the "Shoegaze" and "Dream Pop" genres to the 1980s UK alt rock & punk scene. Not without coincidence, this crossed paths with the rise of the synthesizer in rock music. The term "Shoegaze" arose from the musicians' practice of staring at their effects pedals during concerts, rather than moving around: it started as a pejorative term, then became a welcome classification. Its ethereal, electronic "dreamscape" textures were dismissed by some as "ambient pop," due to a perceived lack of melody and instrumental drive. I certainly think this characterization applies to some bands, particularly Brian Eno's [...]

in the realm of the pop and power and punky genre, me thinks it dont get much higher than the men from knoxville, tn, superdrag . i celebrate their entire catalogue with much frequency, although i mostly just listen to last call for vitriol , but everyone i run into, who are superdrag fans, prefer their 1996 release, regretfully yours . sadly, i have not listened to their last release, which was put out in 09, industry giants . anyone got any insight on it? good, bad, indifferent. honestly, i wasnt much of a fan of [...]

my love of kurt wagner and the troop he's assembled behind him for all these years knows no bounds. even though lambchop may not be my most "listened" to band, whenever i do i cannot deny, nor should you, their importance in the rock and the roll, or actually whatever genre you throw em. how about lets just say they're one of the most important bands in all of music? i will not back down on that statement. dont even listen to this show, just watch that first video down there and wallow in the awesomeness of a [...]

Here's to that deepest, most fleeting of pleasures - the Vermont fall. Yesterday there was that first September chill in the air. It's inevitable in New England - the only question is when, not if, it will come. It always sends my thoughts back to childhood - playing soccer, carving pumpkins... all the real and imagined nostalgia the limbic system can conjure. Here are some tracks, old and new, I thought of during that first crisp breeze: The last song on Bon Iver's recently released self-titled album, "Beth / Rest," was often cited by fans as the least [...]

TV’s Ralph Malph steps through the screen and tiptoes onto the record chart To a large extent, actor Donny Most’s 1976 solo album is the archtypical celebrity cash-in. Though no stranger to music - Most had played in Catskills bands as a teenager - his shot at pop stardom was entirely the product of a staring role on Happy Days and the show’s #1 rating. His label secured performing slots on Dinah, Mike Douglas and American Bandstand, but even Happy Days fever could only push the sugary pop single “All Roads (Lead [...]

Marc Ronson & The Business International's 2010 LP, Record Collection , largely flew under the mainstream music biz's radar. This is a shame and a surprise - to begin with, Ronson was the mastermind behind Amy Winehouse's success with Back To Black. He's also an objectively top-notch producer. You can see his influence on Winehouse when you compare her raw, unrefined footage to what came out of the studio: she wrote the music and the lyrics, but many argue that he was just as responsible for the retro-soul Amy Winehouse "sound" so many people fell in love [...]

like most of my life, its filled with good to great intentions. yet, i find myself constantly being thrown roadblocks that pretty much give the crotch grab and the middle finger to said intentions. had a few things lined up for today, but the backend of this biatch was giving me heartache. so, im just gonna post this teenage fanclub show from the paradiso until i can figure out what the hell is going on back here. its an fm broadcast btw. 1. intro 2. about you 3. [...]

Pheonix is one of those many European alt rock bands that had the good business sense (and poor cultural sense) to write their lyrics in the world's lingua franca rather than that of their own country. The Académie française would surely disapprove that this French group is not singing in la belle langue , but the rest of us who have become comfortable with worldwide English language hegemony are breathing a sigh of relief - it permits us, for example, to easily recognize Pheonix's newest hit, "Lisztomania." The original song is solid - a catchy guitar-driven, standard [...]

The first time I heard the song was a foggy October day in Massachusetts, junior year. I walked from my dorm aimlessly, past the homecoming football game, through a path in the woods with the leaves scattered across the road. The air had that unmistakable New England crispness; it evoked Vermont Septembers past - elementary school, soccer practice. I heard it in the school's co-op, whose stereotype at the time consisted of a mostly unknown, motley collection of sometimes naked cooks and pot-smokers. Its album, Closing Time , was on the kitchen stereo. From time to [...]
just had a request for this just today, and since i knew exactly where it was well its up next. i am gonna sound like a broken record for those that regularly frequent captains dead, but if i could only recommend 5 artists, chris whitley would most certainly be one of em. 1. living with the law 2. make the dirt stick 3. poison girl 4. boogie 5. long way round 6. phone call from leavenworth [...]

oh, hey there. i am currently going through emails of requests for reposts that i have received over the past month or longer, so you may see me 3 or 4 more times tonight. i got nothing to do. so, why the hell not? personally speaking, i dont hold to many other bands in as high regard as i do sleater-kinney. our relationship couldnt have started off rockier i must admit. when i first heard call the doctor, the whole thing was just too much for my senses. tucker's voice was grating, the subject matter i [...]

Yesterday morning thousands of CD and vinyl releases (and some film and games products too) were destroyed in a fire of the 20,000 square meter SonyDADC warehouse in Enfield, London during the London riots.. PIAS operated physical distribution for the UK and Ireland out of that warehouse on behalf of some 165 or so labels. To give you an idea of the scale of the loss, Beggars Group alone lost 750,000 CDs to the fire. While emergency contingency plans are being put in place and a temporary partner is put in place, a huge amount of [...]

a couple of years ago, i took a chance and posted one of my most beloved records, the raindogs' lost souls. the record has been out of print for some time, and i really wanted more people to hear it. lost souls came out 1990, and for the life of me i dont really remember how i found out about em, cause it seems that their reach, sadly, was limited to mostly the boston area. actually i may have my friend dom and his brother dan for turning me onto em. either way, like i said originally since [...]

photo by ryan walter wagner if were talkin bout the best debuts to come out the past 10-15 years, black mountain's 2005 debut would definitely have to be in my top ten, maybe even top 5. they sound like the reincarnation of some old black bluesman who died in 1929 and comes back obsessed with the velvet underground, royal trux and the stones. whatever they sound like, its a wonderful racket. ive dug all their records, but their debut is where its at for me. buy black mountain stuff via jagjaguwar or [...]

been on a huge lyle lovett kick as of late. not sure what brought it on, but im pretty sure spotify had something to do with it. i am both loving and hating spotify, for what its worth. i love the player, hate the file management. it's so half baked. what i had to do is create playlists a, b, c, through the whole alphabet and place artist playlists in corresponding fashion. the shit should just be alphabetized out of the box. ehh, regardless back to mr. lovett. you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler dude/performer than this man.
