Today I received an email from my friend Lori. Subject line: "Whitney Houston is dead." "What a way to break it to me gently," was my first thought. The second: "No way." I'd just returned from a morning run that Houston's "It's Not Right but It's Okay" (the nine-minute Thunderpuss Club Mix) had helped get me through. She couldn't be dead. It must be another hoax. In recent weeks, we'd "lost" Jon Bon Jovi and Eddie Murphy. Surely there'd soon be some press release insisting that Houston was alive and well, [...]

Last spring Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros embarked on the Railroad Revival Tour , which saw the three bands traverse the country together via vintage train cars. The throwback tour, which got its inspiration from the famed 1970 Festival Express tour that transported the likes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Band across Canada, began in Oakland and ended in New Orleans, stopped in six cities along the cross-country route where the bands performed at unique outdoor venues. The entire [...]
Nominated for Grammys, forever ago.The painful Grammy Awards press releases would be reason enough not to take part in the yearly award show, but Bon Iver's Justin Vernon decided to opt his band out

Last month I announced the end of the In Memoriam column. The reaction, by comments and messages via email and Facebook, surprised me. I had been under the impression, acquired by the few comments they received and the very average hits recorded, that the feature was only mildly popular (which serves to stress the importance to comment on posts in features you enjoy). The labour required for the In Memoriam feature remains prohibitive, but by cutting out what really took a lot of time – researching and collating the music and pictures – I can still provide a [...]

Com a morte de Etta James no último dia 20 de janeiro, muitos artistas têm prestado homenagens à cantora. A galera do Portugal. Homenagem bonita!

The club can't handle Flo Rida, but Ellen DeGeneres' soundstage certainly can. The rapper stopped by the morning show to perform his Top 10 hit "Good Feeling" , which takes its hook from Avicii's "Levels" , which in turn samples the late Etta James' 1962 song "Something's Got a Hold On Me". "I'm deeply saddened by the passing of the Great Etta James and I will be forever grateful for the gift she blessed me with," tweeted the rapper after hearing of James' death. Celebrate Etta's iconic voice and Flo's flow in the performance below.
I didn't hear a lot of new albums this month, but I did keep up pretty well with hearing new tracks via PR and my favorite blogs. Here's a mix of favorite finds, old and new, that I haven't already written about this month. Special shoutout to the blogs who hepped me to some of these tracks— Aquarium Drunkard (Reparata & the Delrons), For the Sake of the Song (White Fence, Etta James, and Woodpigeon), and the Rising Storm (Dave Davies). (I came across the rest via Pitchfork and innumerable other blogs [...]

I'll freely admit to not knowing much about Etta James, outside of the fact that she seemed to be a pretty amazing woman. That said, I certainly had a song come to mind when I heard about her passing a couple weeks ago - it just so happens that the song which started playing in my head was Def Jef's Droppin' Rhymes On Drums. Droppin' Rhymes on Drums has always been a favorite of mine , but I have no idea how the Jef/Etta collabo came to pass. I've always assumed there was [...]

It's been about a week now since Etta James, one of the most talented and recognisible characters in the Rhythm and Blues scene of the 502s and 602s, passed away. She had a sound that blended Jazz, R&B and Rock & Roll and Gospel in equal parts with a voice that stands head and shoulders above her peers. There's been so much written about James, so to regurgitate it would do you and her no favours. Instead, Here are four of my favourite Etta James songs, spanning a good chunk of her career. They [...]

And in case you didn't quite capture it I've slowed it down and gifed it up, the XTINA AGUILERA bleeding love at the ETTA JAMES' funeral earlier today.
The XTINA AGUILERA was showing some love at the late ETTA JAMES's funeral, singing the she-singer's classis 'At Last' mp3. And if you look close enough you'll see some liquid (read tampon malfunction) dripping down the AGUILERA 's leg.

Christina Aguilera already made our list of the top 10 Etta James covers to honor her memory, but we must say, the body-confident diva has outdone herself by performing at the soulful legend's funeral. One week after her passing, today mourners gathered to remember the late great, and of course, the most fitting tribute of all for the four-time Grammy-winning icon is a musical one — thus performances from Christina Aguilera and Stevie Wonder were amongst the remembrances. Catch Xtina's heartfelt performance below. Do you think [...]

Recent pickings aplenty in the For The Sake Of The Song headquarters, so let's not waste any precious time. First up: the Owsley Brothers, doing that dirty garage blues thingy very well. Rotten On The Vine is a teaser for their new album Cobalt , out in March. Can't wait, guys. On now to our Canadian pals from Woodpigeon. Love some of their tunes, while others strangely enough leave me cold somehow. This time I'm in luck, as the dreamy title track of their recent ep For Paolo definitely falls in the former [...]

We're but a few weeks into 2012, but the year has already offered up love ("Glory" and baby Blue Ivy) and loss (R.I.P. Etta). How did the pop world turn this week? Take a peek at our fresh new Pop & Fizz chart, in which we've ranked the top artists and news stories shaping the zeitgeist this week, based on incredibly complex math and scientific methods. Where did Adam Lambert, Lil Wayne and Miley Cyrus wind up this week? [...]

by Polly Bresnick Etta James, who passed away last week, could not only sing with searing soul that simultaneously strikes fear and sorrow and strength into the hearts of anyone who hears her voice, but she also bridged the gap between R&B and Rock & Roll back when people were still impressed by that kind of feat, way back when a band of light-skinned black girls was called the "Creolettes," way back when the song title "Roll With Me Henry" was so suggestive for a fourteen-year-old girl to sing, that the title was changed for [...]

It's both inevitable and unfortunate that an artist will often see the best sales of their career after their death. Since her passing on January 20, Etta James' music sales have risen 378% from the following week, with 30,000 albums sold. The iconic singer also nets her highest-charting album ever with The Best of Etta James - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection , which hit #46 on the Billboard 200 with 8,000 sold. Her signature song "At Last" was her best-selling song of the week, re-entering at #29 on the [...]

Soul legend Etta James' will be laid to rest at the end of this week, following her death at age 73 on January 20. A public viewing will be held in Inglewood, California on Friday, while the Reverend Al Sharpton will eulogize the singer at a private funeral in Gardena on Saturday. A statement from Sharpton's representative yesterday said the funeral will include performances by celebrities, but those names were not announced. "At Last" singer James, who died after a battle with leukemia and other ailments, would have celebrated her 74th birthday today.
The funeral for Etta James, who passed away last Friday, has been scheduled for this coming weekend. A ... Read the full article at http://www.prefixmag.com/news/ etta-james-funeral-scheduled-f or-this-weekend/60936/
