Hong Kong Syndikat & The Balearic Orchestra

Hong Kong Syndikat & The Balearic Orchestra I think now would be a great time to announce to all our local Miami followers that one of my favorite re-edit aficionados, Alkalino , will be gracing us with his presence on September 4th at my Mutant Beat Supper Club weekly. And as we planned to make this announcement, he just happened to drop this great edit of obscure German pop group Hong Kong Syndikat. The original track, titled Samba Olec , is just such a bouncy track complete with a steady acoustic guitar strum and sax solo; [...]

EDC Makes Triumphant Return to NYC on the Road to Vegas, Next Stop Today In Chicago

EDC Makes Triumphant Return to NYC on the Road to Vegas, Next Stop Today In Chicago Photo Credit & Contributions by David Saunders Electric Daisy Carnival , Insomniac's premiere event series, made it's triumphant return to New York this past weekend in glorious fashion. This was the second year in a row that EDC had come to NYC for its infamous mixture of state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, live performers, and the always enjoyable carnival rides. (I mean, c'mon, who doesn't love sitting on a ferris wheel watching Porter Robinson destroy the main stage?) As the temperature warmed up, so did the general excitement for EDC NY; which for those [...]

Sixth annual IMS Ibiza honors Fatboy Slim, talks dance music shop, parties on White Isle

In days 1 and 2 of the sixth annual International Music Summit in Ibiza, the dance music industry conglomerated to reflect on the status of music, posit the future, and award the best of the past. After a brief introduction by the IMS partners (including Pete Tong and Danny Whittle), the group moved right into the IMS Business Report which, much to everyone's liking, showed that from 2011 to 2012, there has been a 36% growth in the sale of dance/electronic tracks, higher than any other genre by far. Where to see (or avoid seeing) Kanye West’s new video projection in Philly tonight

Where to see (or avoid seeing) Kanye West’s new video projection in Philly tonight Love Kanye West , hate him or occupy some ever-fluctuating middle ground (that's me), you've got to give the dude credit for continuing to strive for new and creative ways of pushing his art into the world. Of late, his thing is music video projections on the faces of buildings in cities around the world. This began last Friday with his single "New Slaves" in 66 different locations, and continues tonight, as Consequence of Sound reports - with Philadelphia being one of the spots this time. The gang at Philly.com rounded up [...]

Understanding high tech soul: why Detroit techno matters for the EDM generation

Understanding high tech soul: why Detroit techno matters for the EDM generation The word “techno” has certainly taken on its fair share of interpretations in the course of its history. It is undeniably culturally significant not only to devotees of electronic music, but also to understanding the trajectory of the world’s sonic history as we know it. As the new generation of dance music lovers, we owe it to ourselves to understand the place from which we came. When considering techno, the first thing to grasp is just how closely the city of Detroit must be tied to this music’s beginnings and although techno may have rocketed into European sensibilities much more [...]

A conversation with The Thermals’ Kathy Foster about bass, Rocky and their first decade as a band (playing Union Transfer tomorrow)

A conversation with The Thermals’ Kathy Foster about bass, Rocky and their first decade as a band (playing Union Transfer tomorrow) This spring, Portland indie-punk trio The Thermals turned ten and released an album that’s got all the fuzzy scuzzy energy and aggression of their 2003 debut More Parts Per Million . Out last month on Saddle Creek, Desperate Ground is a ten-song set of racing, bracing power trio jams: Hutch Harris’ howling literary lyrics, Kathy Foster’s driving bass tones and Westin Glass’ propulsive percussion. When I caught up with Foster on the phone last night at a Cambridge tour stop, she compared the album to Die Hard and Predator – you [...]

Tame Impala: Wednesday, May 8 @ Brisbane Convention Centre

Tame Impala arrived at the Brisbane Convention Centre halfway through their latest tour around Australia, bringing Midnight Juggernauts with them to an all ages crowd that was clearly looking forward to going berserk. Put simply, no one went home disappointed. Put more simply, anyone who went home disappointed by that performance doesn’t know what the fuck they’re on about. Midnight Juggernauts are back on the touring circuit after a prolonged stint working on new material, which is due to hit LP form sometime later this year. They used the evening to test out a lot of this stuff [...]
