Alex Yaker is one of those way-busy Philadelphia musicians. Most recently, you've probably seen him rock his bass-playing swagger in Summer Fiction. In the past he's performed with Grammar Debate, The Yaker Bros and done a bit of production with Surreal Sound Studios. With everything going on, it's not unsurprising that his own project, Roomtone , only makes periodic appearances, but whenever it emerges, it's worth the wait. This weekend, the band Yaker also refers to as "The Official Indie BossaNova Goosebump Machine" plays its first show in over a year and a half at Johnny Brenda's, [...]

photo via The Explorer's Club. Jason Brewer, singer and main song writer of The Explorer's Club , is gearing up to tour in support of their second full length, Grand Hotel , that comes out on Ridge Rock Music on February 14th. He took time out of his busy schedule to talk food in the south with us including some places they may be stopping on their next journey. Explorer's Club is based in Charleston, SC and has been, if I'm not mistaken, for their entire existence. Have you always [...]

The third in a trio of free '60s-styled AM pop suites In 2008 this South Carolina band's Freedom Wind so thoroughly evoked the Beach Boys golden age, that you'd wonder if their East Coast beach town of Charleston had somehow connected via a time and space portal to Los Angeles in 1965. More than just recreating the harmonies, instrumentation and arrangements, the band evoked Brian Wilson's ethos in music, words and emotional tone. It remains a jaw-dropping achievement from start to finish. Four years later, in February of [...]

When The xx won the Mercury Prize in 2010, the UK knew they had a winner. When "Shelter" became a pivotal track to feature on mixed CDs everywhere, there was a real sense that an alternative and edgy group had propelled into the highly recognizable. I think the next one is about to emerge. Resonating

Around a month ago, I was told The Explorers Club would be releasing their first new material in over four years. Freedom Wind, their 2008 debut, has been a personal favorite of mine since its release, and I assumed the band had split after years of inactivity. So when frontman Jason Brewer e-mailed me last

South Carolina band with a yen for the mid-60s In 2008 this South Carolina band's Freedom Wind so thoroughly evoked the Beach Boys golden age, that you'd wonder if their East Coast beach town of Charleston had somehow connected via a time and space portal to Los Angeles in 1965. More than just recreating the harmonies, instrumentation and arrangements, the band evoked Brian Wilson's ethos in music, words and emotional tone. Photo by Ian Troy Stains On Freedom Wind , the Explorers Club showed off their Beach Boys bona fides, but those lucky enough to dig up the band's debut EP knew their influences were broader than Brian Wilson's sweet harmonies. The band's sophomore release, 2012-due Grand Hotel , finds them looking to Burt Bacharach's complex chords and Hal David's witty lyrics for further inspiration, a sound evident on "Sweet Delights" - a track that nods back to "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." The Explorers Club is releasing covers and rough mixes from the [...]

I am becoming more and more confident in talking on the radio. I am slowly developing my voice - my on-air personality. There is still room for improvement; namely in the transition from Stuarto's show to mine, but I'll get there eventually. Last Friday's show was centered around indie-folk again, with plenty of psychedelic folk, orchestral folk, and folk-pop as well. As started last week, two songs will be featured at bottom. "Notorious Lightning" by Destroyer off Your Blues "Shanty for the Arethusa" [...]

On their 2008 debut, Freedom Wind , The Explorers Club likened their pop music to classics. The harmonies were what did it; saturated in layers and filled with male-on-male falsetto, that album had Pet Sounds written all over it. Nearly four years later, the band has returned with a new EP called The Californian Suite - very Beach Boys-esque, too - and with it, those to-die-for harmonies. But on "Weight Of The World (Under Construction Mix)", they're not a prevalent. They're masked behind a deep set [...]
As many of you have noticed, Obscure Sound is undergoing some changes. I hope the new design helps this site continue on the path of more frequent and diverse updates. The past design was useful, but it was irritating how only one post at a time was able to take the spotlight. Now, features and [...]

Who's hands are those above - Chris Martin? DJ Cam? M. Ward? Nope, it's Marc Byrd from the duo of Hammock leading our indie list for the week, while larger names, such as Coldplay, Tom Waits and several others make for a lively treat. Byrd and Andrew Thompson formed in 2004 as Hammock , which sends a shimmering shoegaze effort in mostly everything we have heard from them. Their latest album Asleep in the Downlights could go any direction as the duo has mastered their expressive music to match their constantly-in-motion lives. Of [...]
