Within And Without is probably the one record on this list that has cropped up on just about every other critic's list this year, so I'm going to keep this brief. Washed Out 's chillwave masterpiece is a lush and hypnotizing 41 minutes, dripping with hazy neon hues and smouldering AM-radio fuzz. It's a surprisingly personal record for Ernest Greene, a man whose music is predisposed to keeping anyone listening at arms-length. Washed Out's debut LP definitely brings a comparative change from the project's early EPs. I guess my issue is that the change just isn't enough to make me wanna stick with this album over previous efforts. There are flashes of progression and ambition here and there, but tracks like "Eyes Be Closed" and "Echoes" seem to repeat old ideas and pump out great sounds without backing them with great songs. So, as you can figure, I was a little underwhelmed at certain points of this album. But maybe there will be future releases from this project [...]
Chillwave ain't dead! (or so it would seem) Ernest Greene aka Washed Out, one of the artists who best represents this genre has finally decided to release his first LP.
