The first thing I noticed in the Press Release was Stoner Thrash and immediately I was intrigued by this oxymoron. One style is a slow groove and the other extreme speeds and manic riffing. We got huge love for The 1975 here at WTGR, praising both their previous EPs, Facedown and Sex . The newly announced Music For Cars EP, released in March, will be the third in a trilogy before their much anticipated debut album in the spring. Sex is the current single taken from their most recent EP of the same name - a youthful, sexually charged anthem on a par with The Killers' Mr Brightside. In this follow up to Facedown, The 1975's Sex 'plays between synth and rock in a love/hate relationship paired to match the EP's young love lyricism. The thick drum hits from their first EP tighten into electronic beats or punk-like rhythms. 75 leaves in its signature builds for the second half of the album - if youve already been over-playing the first singles Sex and You, dont expect the same anthems for first half. If this way too brief four song offering is any indication, this band is seriously talented. On top of displaying the fact that they can completely reinvent their sound track by track while still maintaining a unified aesthetic front, their inventive use of timbre as a compositional element is seriously cool. The 19752s first official release is finally with us and serves to carefully weave together four tracks with a wealth of atmospherics, industrial beats and expansive choruses. We've featured these guys before. You may not remember, as they weren't The 1975 at the time. They were either B I G S L E E P or T H E S L O W D O W N, we lose track. They've had a number of problems with naming rights; apparently a load of spaces aren't sufficient to get around copyright. Thankfully this talented Mancunian quartet have settled on a name, one that's rather easier to type then their previous incarnations.
