REVIEW: The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know

REVIEW: The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know The Twilight Sad - No One Can Ever Know MMM 1/2 The Twilight Sad are one of the few bands capable of genuinely turning darkness into underappreciated beauty; sorrow sounds seductive and rather enrapturing in their hands. Over the course of two albums and a handful of EPs, the Scottish band have made a name for themselves with their brooding yet rousing songs rooted deeply in shoegaze's vast, enveloping character. On their third full-length album, No One Can Ever Know [...]

Video Picks / 02.03.2012

Video Picks / 02.03.2012 So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a show preview or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up... strike that - let's call it a round up. Most of these videos are of bands we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about those bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! [...]

The Twilight Sad: No One Can Ever Know

The Twilight Sad: No One Can Ever Know The amorphous Scottish trio, The Twilight Sad, are back with their third and perhaps most surprising album to date. They have never been afraid of mixing things up, from completely reworking the post rock inclined pop of Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters into borderline sublime shoegaze with Here, It Never Snowed, Afterwards It Did , and later changing their tune with the slightly darker, more brash sophomore Forget the Night Ahead . No One Can Ever Know takes this sonic evolution to the next level. Andrew Weatherall produced and citing influences [...]

The Twilight Sad Another Bed
I honestly wouldn't care if this video featured cattle ranchers, wheat harvesting footage and old people throwing horseshoes, "Another Bed" is so good that it doesn't require visuals. And once the second synth melody arrives then everything gets moodier, stranger and your thoughts immediately go someplace else. It's unavoidable. Not many bands have that effect on me these days. The Twilight Sad 's forthcoming full-length, No One Can Ever Know , is due February 20 on Fat Cat.

The fat cats ripping off artists

The fat cats ripping off artists It was a big week on the internet. Popular sites including Google spent the entire day protesting SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) which is a bill that would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to protect copyrights. For the last several years the music industry suffered knockout blows from online piracy and critics have accused music executives from ripping off artists and consumers. Dot-comers accused them of greed and short-sightedness, seen as the fat cats making obscene profits on the back of musicians' creativity. At the end of the day, web gurus such as Kim [...]

GFP Interview…Forest Fire

GFP Interview…Forest Fire When a band makes album that the influential french music site La Blogoteque deems to be the best record released that year, they're suddenly thrust into the upper-realms of the blogosphere. This is exactly what happened to US pysch-folk-rock- something band Forest Fire with their debut LP Survival . The acclaim wasn't without merit either; Survival remains a strangely intriguing, often beautiful record and the band's live show around it's release remain some of the most exciting and memorable GFP has seen for a long while. In October the band [...]

Odonis Odonis – Hollandaze

Odonis Odonis – Hollandaze Odonis Odonis - Hollandaze By Kenny McMurtrie Toronto's Odonis Odonis blaze onto the airwaves with a white-hot blast of messed up and distorted surf guitar on the opening (and title) track of this here debut album, Hollandaze . New and innovative it ain't (half this review could be taken up with naming the bands their sound is obviously influenced by) but its assured enough to deserve its place on the shelf alongside the likes of A Place To Bury Strangers and other current proponents of the garage [...]

Mazes: A Thousand Heys

Mazes: A Thousand Heys Mazes A Thousand Heys Fat Cat Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Mazes deliver a likable 90's indie rock that will catch your ear. Album Review: UK band Mazes recreate a 90's indie rock vibe on their debut, A Thousand Heys, that has plenty of garage based pop tunes which keep your feet tapping. The group has a very laid back approach to their songs, much [...]

Odonis Odonis – Hollandaze

Odonis Odonis – Hollandaze Lo-fi garage buys you time, obscures the glass to avoid scrutiny, gives a cool sheen to an empty vessel. So, when you don't have that many great songs, you can still get away with it. Just claim it's all a load of discarded bedroom DIY demos that were recorded in an afternoon between lunch and dinner. Bowlegs happens to want a little more from music, so the Odonis Odonis debut was initially met with sceptical thoughts. Especially when we read the PR blurb about how album number two is the cleaner, more produced record (it is currently in [...]
