Favela. - Onwards/Upwards “Look at all the days gone by.” It’s usually around this time of year that resolutions of months past are completely ditched, the stress kicks in and routine bites back. But music like Favela .’s, for all its apparent escapism, is compelling. It has a more powerful message than many an ardent, politically-inclined firestarter, in that it’ll get you reaching for the Winter coat, determined to get outside, see the people you adore, and explore. Onwards and upwards. It’s a cheesy notion, bound to grate on [...]

When in Rio, I decided to visit a favela. I wrestled with this - going to a favela felt a bit like going to point and stare. I decided not to go on a favela tour but instead go on a new cable car to Complexo do Alemão favela in the north of the city. The cable car connects Complexo do Alemão wih Bonsucesso station, which is a short trip from Rio's Central Station. [...]

Tom Schnabel An article appeared in the Sunday 11/25/12 LA Times about the Brazilian government taking over Rio de Janeiro's biggest slum, Rocinha. http://framework.latimes.com/2 012/11/24/brazil-favelas/#/0 It's been said that only in Rio do the poor people live on the hill. Michael Jackson wrote a song and did a video in a favela, "They Don't Care About Us". Jobim wrote a song "Favela" too, also sometimes called [...]
"Trap" is spreading across the globe, Brazilian producer DJ Comrade fuses baile funk and trap to create "favela trap", here's a preview mix and a full track featuring MC Creu off the upcoming "Favela Trap" compilation being released on XAO Productions . (Via Mad Decent )
The UK dance music veteran that is @AfghanHeadspin returns to the digital stores with typically another blinding release. Featuring a minimal input from MC @ITZSTAPLETON - the lyrical juggernaut from Major Look who delivers us a word which is incorporated into the tune, the track in three formats has weight, aura and a very healthy portion of bass. > 'Favela ft Stapleton' by Afghan Headspin Some of the older listeners to this will perhaps be thinking of [...]

Photography By Tiago Sperotto Written By Tiago Sperotto Edited By Max Gibson This past week I had the opportunity to visit one of the largest slums in Rio de Janeiro called Favela de Vidigal. Vidigal is celebrated for its most privileged views of the city. From the top of the Favelas you can see the entire shore from the beaches of Leblon and Ipanema, to the Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redeemer. However, the Favelas are [...]

"Eight years ago, sixty families occupied the Galpao da Araujo Barreto, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Prior to establishing this place, these families lived throughout the dangerous streets of the city. In 2003, these families came together to seize this deserted factory, which lay in ruins, and they transformed it into a home." It's rare that the story you hear most frequently about a place or a culture is in fact, the whole story. We all love City of God , and we've all heard horror stories of poverty and crime [...]

And its got Weatherall DJing. If you're in London, you should go. On the evening of Monday 9th August, the main warehouse of the PIAS distribution group was destroyed in a blaze in Enfield. The warehouse contained a large amount of stock from the UK's main independent music labels. Although the stock was insured, the loss is having a marked effect on hundreds of indie labels, whose economic position is pretty precarious in the first place. AIM (the association of independent music) has put together a fund to help affected [...]

The whole world is wondering (or should be wondering): "What's coming out of Rio?" A better question might be, "what hasn't been coming out of Rio?" While the city - Brazil's second largest, after Sao Paulo - does not possess the deep, immediate Afro-Brazilian musical roots one more often associates with Bahia, its music is unmistakably grounded in those same Afro-Portuguese strains that define the country's musical DNA. I could spend a lifetime talking about Bahian genres - really, they're more like the genres of Brazil itself due to the infusion of African strains in its music - [...]
Yo sorry I haven't posted for a while, caught up with college work and all. Stressful times. Anywho, I managed to head over to the Signal Gallery a couple of days ago where Jonathan Darbys work was exhibited. It was a great show, with the whole of the gallery being transformed into a Brazilian Favela. [...]

The Big Picture tackles Rio's recent drug war : "A small war took place last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Brazilian forces and hundreds of drug traffickers holed up in the shantytown complex dubbed Complexo do Alemão. After recent efforts by officials to pacify Rio's drug and gang-related violence ahead of the upcoming the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics Games, drug gangs struck out last week - attacking police stations and staging mass robberies. After days of preparation, Brazilian security forces launched a raid in the Complexo do Alemão, where between 500 and 600 drug traffickers [...]

Red Alert!!! is the new track from SONORA , very favela beats, kind of ravy at the same time, and screaming to be at the dancefloor banging right now!, full of alarms, and it made me remember that 90s track with [...]

Was looking at pix of Glastonbury Music festival. Seems like an 'overwhelming experience.' Can't believe 'this many people' want to see 'live music.' Photos via bigpicture Damn. This picture 'seriously seems like a Where's Waldo' 2-page spread. Can't believe it is actually 'temporary shelter' for people attending some 'huge ass' music festival in England. Feel 'overwhelmed' to imagine a 'live music experience' with s000 many ppl. Wonder if I really want to 'rally around music' and 'bask in the human spirit' in [...]

The GameBoys are made up of two young, hot DJ's; James Hosking (Hansel) and Dan Richtor (Pebbles). The GameBoys project started after a trip around Europe showing these guys that the music being played in clubs is not what they wanted to hear. Taking it upon themselves to be the ones deciding what sort of music is going to be played, The GameBoys formed and now play their favourite French Pop, Electro, Indie and friends tracks for all of Sydney to hear. [...]

Note: Read on for a contest to win the City of Men Soundtrack CD I'm not a huge soundtrack fan. You might guess that from the space they don't occupy here at SoundRoots. Sure, I rave about the odd Bollywood soundtrack and about films specifically about the music, such as One Giant Leap or Genghis Blues . But there are exceptions to every rule. And this rule is bent by the fantastic soundtrack to [...]
You know, I'm not really all up to date and into Funk Carioca, commonly and apparently, mistakenly referred to as Baile Funk. Though using the name Baile Funk to describe the music has now stuck. Those who read the international and alternative press will recall that Baile Funk are the parties in the favelas of Brazil that played Funk Carioca, and which were incredibly violent affairs. Just reading about these parties that were occasionally reported on gave me the willies. And I just don't think you can talk about Brazilian culture, especially [...]
