For certain segments of the population, including some of us who may be reluctant to admit such things, an adorable Zooey Deschanel dance routine is pretty much audio-visual crack cocaine. And that group of people (which, let's be honest, probably encompasses Stereogum's entire readership, as well as its staff) should enjoy the living hell out of She & Him's new video for " I Could've Been Your Girl ." Deschanel herself directed this one, in which she tries and fails to get the attention of her bandmate M. Ward. This probably makes band practice awkward. Watch it below. [...]
There were many strong music videos this week, and a couple that I loved, from actual adults. But no grown-up is going to beat a charged-up mob of Minneapolis children rapping about bikes and school uniforms. I'm sorry. It's just not ever going to happen. Our picks for the week are below. Mikal Cronin's video for "Change," one of the many delightfully fuzzed-out power-pop songs on his truly excellent new album MCII , is probably the best alienated-kid-at-the-house-par ty music video since Jimmy Eat World's " The Middle ." In this one, directed by Claire Marie Vogel , Cronin plays for a house full of punks while an actual invisible man wanders around, looking for some kind of connection but seemingly unable to find it. It's got more heart than probably any other video you'll see this month, and it's below. Read More...
" Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe " may have been the most instantly iconic song on the young rap god Kendrick Lamar's masterful 2012 album Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City , but it's only now getting a video. The first time you see it, the clip is both beautiful and confounding - Kendrick and his associates, dressed all in white, attending a funeral that doubles as a raucous party. As it turns out, though, there's a punchline, one I won't give away. I laughed. You might, too. Kendrick's Black Hippy confederates make cameos, as do Juicy J [...]
Have you watched the 15-minute Red Bull Music Academy documentary about DFA ? Or the hour-long Savages Ministry Of Sound show ? No? You should do those things. As ever, there was plenty of amazing music-related video on the internet this past week, and not all of it took the form of actual music videos. Some of it, however, did, and we've got five very good music videos below. Read More...
The National's new album Trouble Will Find Me is only a couple of weeks away from release, and they've now dropped a video for one of its songs, the gracefully churning brood "Sea Of Love." Director Sophia Peer has made a decidedly simple video for the song; it's just a single, unmoving camera shot of the band, wearing matching black suits, playing in a small white room, while a little kid, also in a black suit, plays air guitar and frantically mugs. This kid is awesome, and they should seriously consider making [...]

They're no longer SNL regulars, but the satirical fake-rap trio the Lonely Island is still making music, and next month they'll release The Wack Album , their third LP. The album includes a couple of tracks that have already debuted as SNL Digital Shorts, and it'll also have contributions from Solange, Pharrell Williams, T-Pain, and Billie Joe Armstrong. And in the weeks leading up to the album's release, the group has a thing called "Wack Wednesdays" going: They'll post another new video every Wednesday. The first installment arrived this morning. [...]
Harder, better, faster, stronger — and arguably more popular than ever before —Daft Punk, electronica’s most innovative duo and France’s funkiest androids, are reaching new heights with their comeback single, the slinky slice of funk known as “Get Lucky.” In only its second week on the chart, the Pharrell -featuring thumper is sitting inside the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, their first ever song to do so. The pair’s forthcoming album, Random Access Memories (out May 21), promises a new sound and a slew of iconic collaborators [...]
You know this was a good week for music videos when 4Minute made a K-pop video with dancing zombies in it , one where they fight the dancing zombies by spraying hairspray at them , and it didn't even crack my top five . The videos that did crack my top 5 are below. Enjoy. Read More...
Kurt Vile's wonderful new album Waking On A Pretty Daze , one of the year's best, is a languorous sprawl, and you wouldn't expect it to lend itself to elegant graphic design or stark iconography. But in making the proper video for Vile's song "Never Run Away" (which isn't to be confused with the adorable preview video ), the great directing team HARRYS dressed Vile in an all-white ensemble and filmed him in 35mm. We see Vile playing a white guitar and riding an all-white school bus, slouching his way around the [...]
Whoo ! Last month, Janelle Monáe released her Erykah Badu-assisted single " Q.U.E.E.N. ," an irresistible art-funk strut. And today, we get the sort of video that makes an already-great song even better. The new "Q.U.E.E.N." video is a triumph of vicious charisma and graphic design, starring Monáe and Badu as thawed-out rebels who throw a dance-party in a futuristic museum. And it is so good . Monáe debuts an absolutely deadly early-'60s mod mook, her friends get to show off some crispy dance steps, and Badu gets a perfectly badass entrance. If I don't get any more work [...]
Are music videos on the way out? I don't know. Probably not. A million of the things seem to materialize on YouTube every day, and they're probably still the best way for younger artists to introduce themselves to the curious public. But more and more, big acts seem to be forgoing the music video for promotional stunts: H&M bikini commercials, clips where they go bowling with Steve Buscemi. A note to artists: Those things are fine and all, but they almost never turn out anywhere near as good as a well-executed music video. Below, check out five well-executed music videos [...]
The crazy-exciting young British dance duo Disclosure released their new buoyant single " You & Me ," a collaboration with the singer-songwriter Eliza Doolittle, last week. And today, we get the video, a beautifully shot and edited story about a young couple traveling through Europe together. We see them making out, drinking, arguing, dancing, backflipping, getting lost, jumping into absurdly blue water, riding roller coasters, smacking each other with a dildo. It's all just terribly romantic and inviting, and when the actual Disclosure show up near the end, it's finally like: "Oh right, this is a music video." Watch it [...]
Miguel might have invited fellow genre-defining young genius Kendrick Lamar to kick a quick verse on the buttery seduction song " How Many Drinks? ," but he wasn't about to let the kid take over the video. Until Kendrick shows up for his verse, this thing is all Miguel. It's an absolutely slick performance video, the kind of thing that should convince any skeptics that they should go see this guy live at their first opportunity. When Kendrick does show up, he and Miguel show a nice clown-around rapport; I'd absolutely watch a sitcom about these two. Clark Jackson directs; [...]
Every music video that came out during this apocalyptic, ridiculous week felt like a way to kill a few minutes before either flames consumed the entire planet or Daft Punk got around to dropping their "Get Lucky" video, so if we found ourselves a little less captivated than usual this week, it wasn't necessarily the videos' fault. And a quick word about the video that would've wound up at #6 on this list. With their last two videos , the team of Youth Lagoon and director Tyler T. Williams made clips that played with time and with [...]
At Coachella Saturday night, R. Kelly joined headliners Phoenix for mashed-up versions of "19013/"Ignition" and "Chloroform"/"I'm A Flirt." Check out fan-captured video below and photos of the live collaboration above. Read More...
PSY has released his official video for "Gentleman," the follow-up to his mammoth single "Gangnam Style." And, as somewhat expected, he does not behave like a gentleman at all. One moment he causes a woman to fall off her treadmill, and later he kicks a soccer ball away from children. But when he scores a date with someone who turns out be a prankster herself (K-pop singer Ga ), PSY's "Gentleman" video breaks out into chaos. ( Take note, Bauuer . ) Perhaps the best part of the "Gentleman" video, though, [...]
The best music videos that crossed my video screen this week - the top three on the list you'll find below - are paranoid little masterworks of dread and disorientation and confusion. I have no idea what any of them are about, but all of them crept their way into my bloodstream and radiated menace in every direction. The other two videos on the list are cartoonish little bursts of joy. Music videos: They contain multitudes! Watch the picks below. Read More...
Nabil is a don among music video directors, and he's reaching that Spike Jonze/Michel Gondry/Hype Williams level where it's an event every time he drops a new visual. That's certainly the case with his clip for "Overgrown," the title track from the brand new James Blake album. In the video, we see Blake spending time at a remote cabin on a mountainous seaside, watching the world whirl by him at extreme speed while dancing druid-wraiths stalk him. I have no idea what any of it means, but nearly every shot is an absolute stunner, and the underlying feeling of [...]
You know how I've been threatening to get weird with this column, to start including late-night performances and whatever other random bits of music-related video that might find their way on this site? This is the week the universe decided to call my bluff, since the one of the best pieces of music-related video, if not the best, was Deerhunter's broken-down and instantly iconic performance of "Monomania" on Fallon , a performance piece done with more flair and attention to detail than most music videos. But I still made a list of five music videos. Inertia [...]
