Review/Listen: Colin Stetson – New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light

Review/Listen: Colin Stetson – New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light Not much is left to say about Colin Stetson , but if you haven't gotten caught up yet, here's a brief rundown: Colin Stetson is a musician on a whole new level for musicians. He plays saxophone (and pretty much everything else with a reed) like a professional athlete, wrestling, pushing, and generally torturing his instrument, utilizing a technique called circular breathing to play for, sometimes, 15 goddamn minutes straight! Wikipedia has generously compiled a list of artists he's recorded and performed with, and it's even larger than I recalled: [...]

Listen to AbdeCaf’s exclusive mix for Consequence of Sound

Listen to AbdeCaf’s exclusive mix for Consequence of Sound A few weeks ago , AbdeCaf contributed a mix to The 4052s Plastic Platform series that revealed an affinity for Clams Casino, Drake, and The Weeknd. Now, the Florida-based producer has returned with another choice selections of cuts exclusively for Consequence of Sound as he preps for his stint as DJ-in-residence at our CoSigns day party at South by Southwest . Included in the mix is a song born from a previous CoSigns event. At this past fall's CMJ Music Marathon, I stood in the crowd next to AbdeCaf as Conveyor [...]

Dreams Living To Die? The Luyas, Birthdays.

It wasn't until the mid-'00s that Canadian independent music began to really make waves this side o' the pond. Broken Social Scene – the rather ironically entitled moniker to Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning's all-encompassing collective – had already released three full-lengths, the '05 eponymous third of which picked up umpteen plaudits here as well as being certified Gold over yonder, selling over 50,000 copies. Indeed, the duo's artistically embracive vehicle united members from such esteemed likes as Stars, and Metric, and Leslie Feist, and Reverie Sound Revue, and Do Make Say Think , and so forth. Startling records [...]

Record Store Day 2012: What I Bought

Record Store Day 2012: What I Bought It was a cold and rainy day but didn't stop people for  Record Store Day  2012. Surprised by the turnout when I got to Vertigo Records  at 8:30am. There was already people in line, I was around the 20th person. Last year I was one of five people who got there at around that time. I guess the buzz and hype surrounding Record Store Day is a good thing for the indie record shops. I totally zoom by this year's event. Here is a list of what I bought. [...]

RECAP + PHOTOS: The JUNO Awards are a Pure Celebration of Canadian Indie

RECAP + PHOTOS: The JUNO Awards are a Pure Celebration of Canadian Indie The Juno Awards are 'The Grammys of Canada', where Canadian artists are honored for teaching the world that Canada is the home of AMAZING, KEWL artists. From what I understand, Canada is this utopian place 4 artists to believe that they are valued by society, not just corporate entities. They come to America, make money, then go back to Canada to believe that they are 'still artists.' Here are some photos from the show and a COMPLETE recap of the big winners of the night. The Arcade Fire . [...]

2011 – records, records, records

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Bats In The Attic (Unravelled)
Well, 2011. You were quite the year! So much so that I’ve only been able to recover enough to think about you a full week into 2012. Crazy, huh? New jobs, lots of change, oodles of shenanigans, and yes, lots of good music. So much so, that I undoubtedly missed vast quantities of things that [...]

2011: The Year Canadian Music Broke

Arcade Fire accepting the GRAMMY for Album of the Year at the 53rd GRAMMY Awards
Filed under: News , Exclusive Getty Images | Chromewaves | Getty Images 2011 was the year the Occupy movement dominated politics, but the American music industry also faced an occupation as Canadians set up their metaphorical tents in the charts, at award shows and on music critic best-of lists. In the first week of December, for the first time ever, four of the Top Five albums on the Billboard pop charts were by Canadians. Crooner [...]

Fanfarlo, Childish Gambino lead first batch of acts announced for Canadian Musicfest 2012

Fanfarlo, Childish Gambino lead first batch of acts announced for Canadian Musicfest 2012 fanfarlo.com When it was announced earlier this Summer that Canadian Musicfest / Canadian Music Week was moving from it's traditional slot in the second week of March - right before SXSW - to the fourth week of March - right after SXSW - I was confused and concerned. Confused because, well, I dislike change, and concerned because whereas doing back-to-back festivals is exhausting no matter which way you order it, I liked that I could get into game shape with CMW, go hard through SXSW and then collapse immediately afterwards and savour my annual post-Austin [...]
