5 Songs is a weekly series where we point out the strange, the grand, and the unique connections between our favorite songs. Let’s get weird. Words by Chris If you’re that broken-hearted misfit living in a former bungalow of love off of Butler, wading through snow as the days pass you by, you of all people know the potential healing power of music. However, some “break-up songs” seem to just wallow in self-loathing or [...]
I, for one, am expecting big things out of Brighton, U.K.-based producer Ambassadeurs . The kid made a huge splash last year with the single " M.O.P.E. " and then that killer EP, Come A Little Closer . I get the feeling he's working on something extra special for 2012, though that's not stopping him from dropping lil' treats along the way. He just posted this lush reconstruction of Feist's "The Water" that stems from 20072s The Reminder . You can stream and download it below, and don't be surprised if you find [...]

Clock Opera will be appearing as part of the programming for the TGTF stage at the Liverpool Academy of Arts on Friday 18 May, playing at 20.30 , as well as performing at Brighton Dome tonight (Friday 11 May) at the Great Escape at 20.30. I got together a bunch of questions for the band, including asking the band how the band formed, how SXSW this year went for them (including an unfortunate run-in with an oil painting), about all those unusual percussion bits they use [...]

In this edition: Post-Record Store Day Picks from Justin Flythe (Lonnie Walker); Futurebirds and "Feistadon"; considerations from Cow Parade Cow, SexyWaterSpiders, A Thousand Fuegos; and videos from Death Grips, Garbage, The Shins, and Turnpike Glow. Digg UP TAPES RELEASEs Justin Flythe's "Nieces and Nephews" About two years ago, Justin Flythe was diagnosed with Lymphoma. It was a major shock to his friends and family, and made substantial changes in his relatively young life. Most difficult was the decision to leave the band, [...]
Feist and Mastodon's split single, appropriately called Feistodon , was recorded exclusively for Record Store Day (tomorrow!), but you can stream both tracks below. Feist tackles Mastodon's "Black Tongue" from the group's critically lauded 2011 album, The Hunter . Mastodon decided to cover "A Commotion," a highlight from Feist's excellent Metals album. Both artists' disparate styles made this split single one of the most talked about Record Store Day releases of the year, and now that we've heard it, we can say with some confidence [...]

Last year on one fateful evening in the UK, Mastodon and Feist happened to be playing the same night on Later... with Jools Holland. Eyes met across the room and rumours began as to the two releasing a split of some kind. Fast forward to the here and now and Tomorrow is a very big day for a lot of music fans. It's Record Store Day. Feist and Mastodon, nicely coined as Fesitdon have now offered up the tracks they are releasing tomorrow via a 7". Mastodon tackle the Metals featuring track "A Commotion" [...]
Before I divulge into a formal, detailed, seemingly accurate account of the sounds experienced on the new BADBADNOTGOOD LP, I figured that because we're dealing with a fairly unconventional record from on of the artists who is changing the game of the genre in which they so oddly inhabit, I figured that I'd start off a critique unconventionally. Without further ado, a cautiously constructed, ready-for-home recipe for BADBADNOTGOOD : Begin with 2 cups of concentrated, fresh jazz piano. Try not too make it too skillfully played, but just enough to contribute [...]
"How Come You Never Go There," a highlight from Feist's excellent, new Metals album, has been stripped, chopped and remixed by alternative rock vet Beck . It's all skittering drums and ominously pitch-shifted horns, giving the Starbucks staple a thrilling edge. There are a lot of things to like about Beck's take on the song, but perhaps the best part is that Feist can pull this off, comfortable in the chaos of sped-up-slowed-down horns and intricate build-up-break-down drum patterns. It's a good look for you, Leslie. [...]

Last month we got to enjoy the fantastic remix of Feist 's Metals featuring single, "How Come You Never Go There" from Clock Opera . That was great. Today though, an old master returns to the internet to offer up a remix of that very same track. The man I'm talking about is the uber talented Beck, who last worked with Feist back in '09 when he was doing his Record Club . Beck has brought the funk to the track so I'll stop moving my fingers around the keyboard and let the remix [...]

Two Feist posts in one day can't be bad, can it? In short, no. This, the second of the day comes as two bands we like come together in the shape of a remix. London's Clock Opera have given the Feist track "How Come You Never Go There" the knob turning treatment and the results can be heard below. They'll no doubt improve your mood on this most glorious of weekdays, Friday. The weekend's here so how about we all have a dance to this little number. On a side note, Clock Opera [...]

The observant Dan Mangan sees a bird flying around the photo studio Fans of Arts & Crafts are in for a night of good jams, with (ex-A&C-ers) Stars at Music Hall of Williamsburg (with North Highlands) and an early show with Dan Mangan at Mercury Lounge (with Icewater), both going down in NYC TONIGHT (10/11). If you're just making the decision to try and do both, I hope you [...]

Tweet Buy the album on Amazon - Vinyl | MP3 | CD We all still clearly remember Feist singing and dancing in a sparkly blue jumpsuit, surrounded by multicolored, similarly-clad dancers, in the iPod Nano commercial that featured her massive pop hit " 1 2 3 4 " and turned her from indie darling to global sensation. Since 1999, Feist has released three [...]

We love Feist’s latest Metals , so it’s no surprise we also love its bonus track “Pine Moon.” It’s a haunting, chilling ballad that gathers power as it grows from a guitar-driven lullaby into a powerful fairy tale of a song with a heartbeat handclap pulse. When a choir emerges from hazy piano chords to back Feist up with a chorus of oooohs, you can almost see them emerging from the fog. Yesterday Feist released her beautiful new highly anticipated album, Metals . Today our buddies of at Disco Naivete have been kind enough to upload the iTunes exclusive bonus chart titled "Pine Moon" for us all to listen to. This sits nicely alongside the rest of the album very nicely. The guys at 130BPM also point out that Feist played a secret show at The Church on 155th Street a few nights ago and a rather nice video of her performing "So Sorry" has surfaced online. Give that a watch at the top after [...]
