Simone Felice has been many things -- songwriter, drummer and vocalist of The Felice Brothers, founder of The Duke and the King for starters -- but with his self-titled debut album due April 3, he can now officially add "solo artist" to his bio. Mumford and Sons' Ben Lovett helped out with the largely self-produced album, a collection of tracks with a "ghostly and gospel-like feel", according to the press release -- and you can sense that atmosphere on the austere and rustic lead single "New York Times" (acoustic video after the jump). Back in 2008, the Swedish sister duo of Johanna and Klara Söderberg, who perform and record as the First Aid Kit , became indie-rock viral video sensations when they posted a clip of themselves in a forest, decked out in flannel, performing an enchanting acoustic version of the Fleet Foxes' Tiger Mountain Peasant Song. The video has since been viewed a staggering 2.6 million times. As a result of the YouTube clip, the sisters, who had released an EP on a Swedish label in April of that year, were signed to the London-based Wichita Records, who re-released [...]
The last few years have certainly had its fair share of emotional ups and downs for Simone Felice . In 2009, the singer-songwriter parted ways with The Felice Brothers, revealing the heart-tugging reasons for the break with a public open letter to his fans. Then in 2010, Felice underwent open heart surgery. All this hasn't slowed Simone down, as he has continued to write (both music and prose), record and tour, and come 2012 he will release his self-titled debut album via Conor Oberst's Team Love label. The largely self-produced, ten-track record, which will hit stores on [...]

And so here we have our top ten albums of the year. To be honest the order is fairly arbitrary - on another day it could be a completely different as really these ten records have so little between them in turns of the pleasure and enjoyment they gave us. If you've not acquainted yourselves with any of these then we're pretty sure you won't be disappointed. 2011 - what a fine year for music. 10 Twilight Hotel - When The Wolves Go Blind Download Twilight [...]

I would like to think I do a pretty good job of covering as much music as possible, and given the chance to digest a ton of music its obvious that I'll miss some of the fantastic releases that a year has. These are some of them that are sticking out to me, ones that I've only recently gone back and listened to and realized what a god awful fool I was for not mentioning them more. Black Joe Lewis - Scandalous Black Joe Lewis - She's So Scandalous [...]

So, the penultimate entry before Mrs Mackerel finishes off this year's set of Top Ten postings tomorrow is my very own. Without further ado... 10. Milk Music - Beyond Living Although it was released early in the year, I only discovered it recently. A full on, no holds barred, nihilistic 70s punk attitude and the very best of the heavyweight riffs of the grunge era is a mighty powerful combination. One that makes me wish my car stereo went all the way up to eleven. Download Milk Music - Beyond [...]

I fancy myself an early Felice Brothers fan. Fell in love with their debut and caught them performing on a porch at SxSW ( caught it on video ). As a lover of folk music, it was impossible not to love the contrasting Dylan-esque vocals of Ian Felice and the Cat Stevens-esque vocals of Simone Felice. I think it was the following year in Austin when we found The Felice Brothers again, this time at a much larger venue. I found James Felice in the audience before the show and asked "Where is Simone?" He quickly said "He [...]

The trouble with acoustic covers of popular songs is that some earnest singer armed with a guitar will slow down Jingle Bells and whisper the lyrics as if they have a deep meaning. I have no principles that compel me to disallow the notion of whispering songstresses, but on this Christmas mix I've tried to keep them to a respectful minimum. Still, we have the doses of yuletide angst which the acoustic genre prescribes to go with the upbeat welcome of the merry season. Don't be alarmed by the inclusion of three tracks called Christmas Song: they are [...]

For the second of our 'guest' top ten posts we are pleased to welcome the finger-choppin' Banner to the roster with his first contribution to the end of year best of lists. " It's been a great year musically and especially as this year I became a dad. I'd like to thank Doctor Roddy and Chris T Popper for their steady supply of CDs this year and especially for little Max's mega mix from which I've selected some of my top ten tunes. I would like to have written a bit more about the songs but unfortunately I [...]
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks. MP3: The Lumineers - Ho Hey (live) I picked up on the Lumineers late in the year, but [...]

I'm not sure any collection of words or set of images can really do justice to what it's like to catch a Deer Tick show right now. This is a band in their prime. They don't care who you think they should be. They know who they are, they know what they're doing and they're perfectly fucking fine with it. Now that's not to say they don't want you to like them. It's quite evident from lead man John McCauley's presence on stage that he wants you to enjoy yourself as much [...]

Deer Tick - Miss K. Fresh off the release of Divine Providence , Rhode Island based boozy rockers Deer Tick will be playing a sold out show here in Boston to crowds of Tick heads dying to hear some their favorite tracks off of DP. The new album is a healthy representation of exactly how a Deer Tick show sounds. It's a raw, drunken boot stomper that may have turned off some critics (but who gives a shit) but I for one am a huge fan of it. I've seen these guys a [...]
