My obsession with St. Vincent is possibly unhealthy. I am absolutely infatuated and this new video, premiered today by Google Music and Youtube, is no exception. The feelings it provokes in such a hyperbolic and artistic way are magical...in a sad, disturbing, and desperate way. It brings the song forward in, not a new light, but in a brighter more tangible way. Sensational.
Influential techno label Sandwell District has closed. The label, which launched in 2005 and issued top minimal releases from Function & Regis, Female, and Ian J. Richardson, made the surprising announcement via tumblr on December 31 stating "regular audio communications from Sandwell District will cease. All vinyl artefacts have been decommissioned." The label was highly regarded by DJs and fans, Sandwell District's game plan was enigmatic along the lines of legendary outfits Underground Resistance and Basic Channel. The message added that Sandwell District will still exist "through live actions — which will continue to expand into new sonic [...]

I have posted Alex Winston a few times before(6 times actually, check the search in the left side bar.) So it should come as no surprise that you find me here singing this young Detroit native's praises today. She's great. Not good, great… Her whiny/raspy/squeaky/sweet yet eerie voice is one of a kind. I really dig it. Jammerstiltskin status. Her new album Sister Wife is amazing. Buy It Now and support an artist that is doing amazing work. Everlasting Light - Alex Winston - Black Keys [...]

Thursday have announced a headlining tour to round out the end of 2011. [photo by Gina Asprocolas ] On Saturday night, Screaming Females played perhaps the best show I have seen all year. Shortly before midnight at 285 Kent , and after a brief soundcheck the band ripped into their set with ferocious energy that did not let up for nearly an hour. Sadly, we'd missed Screaming Females the last two times we intended to record them after we have seen their impressive set opening for Ted Leo a year and a half ago. Eighteen months later this band has reached a level of proficiency [...]

Screaming Females Three I-need-to-somehow-reinforce-my -umbrella-to-withstand-windsto rms reasons to head down to Schubas tonight... 1. New Jersey trio Screaming Females have made a strong name for themselves in the few years that they've been together, catching the eye of bands such as Dinosaur Jr and The Dead Weather. And the fame is well-deserved because the trio – bassist King Mike, drummer Jarrett Dougherty and lead singer and guitarist Marissa Paternoster – play heavy garage pop with punk and blues rock tendencies. Their influences bleed through almost every composition; just try [...]

Screaming Females at Bowery Ballroom ( more by Devan Council ) As discussed , Screaming Females (who just played Bowery Ballroom ) are headed out for a round of dates that will terminate with a doubleheader at Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ on 11/6. photos by Devan Council Screaming Females @ Bowery Ballroom Washington Post : You're about to record a new album, so that means you have a whole batch of new songs ready to go. But when you play shows, people like to hear songs they know. So how do you decide to work new stuff into the setlist? Mike Abbate : We played a show in New Brunswick over the summer and [...]

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 Punk trio Screaming Females is celebrating its emerging adulthood by reissuing its first two albums in a very grown-up vinyl format. The band has come a long way since its self-released debut, Baby Teeth , was written and recorded in drummer (and then-high schooler) Michael Abbate's attic six years ago. Like many angsty New Jersey teens, the members of Screaming Females started performing in their friends' basements; unlike most New Jersey teens, however, the band gradually went from touring Jersey to touring nationally with bigger punk acts such as Against Me! and [...]

Screaming Females, the three-piece New Jersey garage band that we have already praised here and here , are reissuing their two early albums that have long been out of print, as they were self-released and sold only at shows. The records, Baby Teeth and What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.? , are both being printed on vinyl and seeing a second run via Don Giovanni Records, due to hit stores on October 4th. To celebrate this, Screaming Females are offering one lucky One Thirty BPM reader a signed copy of [...]

Back in April when we launched the @Hidden_Track Twitter account, we kicked things off with a B List of 20 Twitter Feeds to Follow . Number One on the list was Grace Potter ( @gracepotter ) of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. The HT fave was an easy choice thanks to her consistent updates and behind-the-scenes pictures from the road. Though Potter was the only female in our list of 10 Bands to follow, there are plenty more worth following, and here's 10 more Women who rock and are worthy of a follow. [...]
