INTERVIEW: Chris Porterfield of Field Report, This Saturday At The Dakota Jazz Club

INTERVIEW: Chris Porterfield of Field Report, This Saturday At The Dakota Jazz Club The always-extraordinary Field Report returns to Minneapolis this weekend! In all fairness, the Milwaukee-based outfit was just here last weekend supporting Richard Thompson at the MN Zoo, but on Saturday they'll return to the intimate designs of the Dakota Jazz Club supporting Josh Rouse. It's going to be stellar. MFR first spoke with lead man Chris Porterfield last November as they approached their first headlining show in Minnesota. We took this weekend as an opportunity to follow up and see how things have changed a [...]

Field Report – Field Report

I Am Not Waiting Anymore, by Field Report
Some shadows are particularly difficult to escape. If you happen to be a folksy troubadour with a penchant for soul-searching and you call the American Midwest home, good luck avoiding Bon Iver comparisons. If you’re Chris Porterfield, things are that little bit trickier. Field Report , the brainchild of Porterfield (and a cute anagram) is a project tethered to its leader’s past, Porterfield having cut his teeth in now-defunct Wisconsin outfit DeYarmond Edison, itself led by one Justin Vernon. It’s not exactly fair that Vernon should play a role – albeit an indirect one – in Field Report’s narrative, [...]

Live Gig Commentary: Stornoway at Black Cat, Washington DC – 1st May 2013 vs. at Schubas, Chicago – 11th May 2013

Live Gig Commentary: Stornoway at Black Cat, Washington DC – 1st May 2013 vs. at Schubas, Chicago – 11th May 2013 Editor's note: it pained me greatly that Stornoway was on tour in America the exact time I would be in Britain this month, but luckily the other two stateside writers, Cheryl and Carrie, admirably stepped in to cover the DC and and Chicago shows, respectively, and give the guys their due. Instead of two straight reviews, they decided they would discuss their experiences and join forces to produce one commentary on the two shows. What follows it the fruits of their labour. Oxford folk rockers Stornoway have just finished [...]

Field Report - Field Report

Field Report - Field Report When Wisconsin indie-folk legends DeYarmond Edison fractured, the members hurried into other projects - most notably, Justin Vernon became Bon Iver. Most of the rest of the collective formed Megafaun, but Chris Porterfield went out to invent Conrad Plymouth (who actually ended up opening for Vernon's vastly more successful splinter), and later on, Field Report . You'd think there would be pangs of fist-shaking jealousy or viridian envy - but apparently not. Though both diverged at a critical point in life, and Vernon went to superstardom while Porterfield scurried between support slots, the Field Report mainman harbours no resentment; [...]

Field Report - Route 18 - HearYa Live Session 3/5/13
Up until a couple of weeks ago, the band  Field Report  were completely off my radar. And they probably would have remained off my radar if I hadn’t been tempted away from my Twitter feed after seeing  Slowcoustic  and  Wake The Deaf  raving in agreement about how great something was (Twitter Tip: if you see two people, whose tastes align well with yours, both raving about the same thing… it’s usually a good idea to go see what they are raving about). That ‘something’ was  the HearYa session  that Field Report recorded. And they were not fooling. Too [...]

Field Report – Field Report

Field Report – Field Report By Alistair Seaton May 20, 2013. These days a backstory seems to be obligatory for any debut album expecting to receive attention, and in this sense Field Report doesn't disappoint.  It is a vehicle for Christopher Porterfield (of which Field Report is an anagram of his surname), a former member of DeYarmond Edison , the band that also used to provide a home for Justin Vernon ( Bon Iver ) and future members of Megafaun , Phil and Brad Cook. Given this pedigree, his self-titled debut sounds much as you might expect: folky, [...]

Folkadelphia Session: Field Report

Folkadelphia Session: Field Report If you haven't been listening to Milwaukee's Field Report by now, here's your chance to make it up with no hard feelings from me (but do it quick). There are only a handful of musicians and bands that I nebulously define as having "that Folkadelphia sound," meaning that our radio show was created to support and share music exactly like this, like Field Report is making. These "Folkadelphia sounding" bands bridge the gaps not only between various folk music traditions, past and present, but also between other genres, technologies, and artistic disciplines. The end result is an inventive [...]

Stornoway and Field Report at The Horseshoe in Toronto

Stornoway and Field Report at The Horseshoe in Toronto Frank Yang 2010 wasn't really that long ago, but apparently it was long enough that I'd just about forgotten about Oxford, England's Stornoway despite their debut Beachcomber's Windowsill making it onto my year-end list , helped along by a stellar local live debut that December at the El Mocambo. Which is not to say that I had forgotten them completely or that I liked them, but by the time their follow-up album Tales From Terra Firma came out in mid-March, they'd [...]

Field Report does HearYa Session, Slowcoustic sits in awe.

Field Report does HearYa Session, Slowcoustic sits in awe. Field Report and HearYa - a match made in indie-folk heaven? I definitely think this now. The Milwaukee boys turned up in Chicago in a blizzard and heartily performed 4 tracks. These 4 songs are now available for immersing yourself inside...completely. The latest album from Field Report is a square kick in the gut of an album and it continues to impress with the additional sessions the band is performing lately. The songs are growing, flexing, gaining additional character (if possible). I like that as a band, Field Report are performing their songs in almost original form each time you [...]

Field Report, Live Session #113

Field Report, Live Session #113 As the snow began to fall on a March morning, I wondered if this session was even going to happen.  Luckily, Field Report, aware of the impending blizzard in Chicago, left Milwaukee early to beat the weather.  This would be my first session since relocating SHIRK studios to its new location.  The wiring and equipment had barely been tested and to say I was nervous would be an understatement. The band’s early arrival gave us some extra setup time and by the time I was ready to hit record, everything was sounding and behaving like I thought it should.  The [...]

Ripple Field Report - The Specials/Little Hurricane Fox Pomona 3/20

Ripple Field Report - The Specials/Little Hurricane Fox Pomona 3/20 What would it be like to see a band that truly defines a particular genre? Imagine the possibilities: dodging spitballs and projectile beer at some bowling alley in Memphis during the Pistols’ North American tour; sweating it out in a Queensbridge park watching Marley Marl work the turntables while insulting BDP’s Bronx lineage at every opportunity; maybe being fortunate enough to have caught Dylan go shockingly electric at the Newport folk festival back in 1965. Heady stuff, no? Having the privilege to stand among the adoring faithful when The Specials reunion tour rolled through Pomona late last [...]

Codfish Hollow Kicks off the 2013 Season with Bern in the Barn on May 4th

Codfish Hollow Kicks off the 2013 Season with Bern in the Barn on May 4th The winter had overstayed its welcome in Eastern Iowa this year and with the frost finally succeeding and the bulbs pushing their greens up in anticipation of flowering, we can finally (hopefully) start looking forward to Spring and Summer and to the recent announcement by Codfish Hollow of the first show in the barn this year! Last year we saw two really amazing events in the Codfish Hollow Barn stage even without an official Daytrotter Barnstormer show. July 4th brought  a mind-melting and body-dehydrating appearance by Counting Crows and their touring Outlaw Roadshow lineup for what [...]

Our Live Life, Vol. 3: March 2013 Concerts Delicate Steve @ Subterranean From Chicago to Columbus to Austin, FP saw a lot of awesome shows in March.
