Some shadows are particularly difficult to escape. If you happen to be a folksy troubadour with a penchant for soul-searching and you call the American Midwest home, good luck avoiding Bon Iver comparisons. When Wisconsin indie-folk legends DeYarmond Edison fractured, the members hurried into other projects - most notably, Justin Vernon became Bon Iver. Most of the rest of the collective formed Megafaun, but Chris Porterfield went out to invent Conrad Plymouth (who actually ended up opening for Vernon's vastly more successful splinter), and later on, Field Report . As the snow began to fall on a March morning, I wondered if this session was even going to happen. Luckily, Field Report, aware of the impending blizzard in Chicago, left Milwaukee early to beat the weather. This would be my first session since relocating SHIRK studios to its new location. Oxfordian folk / pop group Stornoway headline Kung Fu Neckti e tonight. Following up their 2010 debut Beachcomber's Windowsill , the academically-minded quartet (led by an ornithologist) released Tales from Terra Firma earlier this month. Field Report stopped by Dollhouse Studios in Savannah, Georgia recently while at the Savannah Stopover Music Festival . The Wisconsin folk group recorded alternate versions of album favorites "I Am Not Waiting Anymore" and "Fergus Falls" in addition to previewing a new song called "40/40."
