People are doing traditional-style reviews all over the web, so we decided to try something different. In each “breakdown” we’ll take a look at what a film’s marketing lead us to believe, how the movie actually played, and then what we learned from it all. Read on! The Impression: Set inside a "reborn" United States where murder is legal one night a year, Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey try to keep their family alive. The Reality: [...]
The next chapter in the Insidious story has just been unveiled. James Wan, director of the first Insidous and creator of the Saw franchise, is returning to direct the next in the occult horror film, Insidious Chapter 2 . The film takes place after its precursor where evil spirits have followed Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) to his home. Of course, those who've seen the first film know that he's hiding a secret. The trailer hints at all of the scary shenanigans to be seen, including ominous baby monitor voices, flickering candles, mysterious voices, and a litany [...]
Film properties aren't like baseball cards or Pokemon, but I guess word didn't get to Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, Interstellar ( which I talked about a bit awhile back ), is set to be a huge blockbusting, money-making machine when it hits theaters in 2014. Interestingly, the film is being co-produced by Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, two rival studios that don't normally work together. In fact, it's practically unheard of for two different studios to co-produce films, especially films with the level of magnitude that Interstellar has. Today, The [...]
Back in 2011, there was this lovely little movie being developed called The Hand Job that was gonna star Aubrey Plaza ( Safety Not Guaranteed ) as an inexperienced high school graduate desperate to have her first sexual experiences to prepare herself for college. Of course, MPAA wasn't going to green-light the name of the film, and it was unceremoniously changed to The To Do List . Sure, it still carries the sexual innuendo of the original title, but come on... imagine watching a film starring Plaza discovering her sexuality. Fast forward two years, and the first [...]
CollegeHumor has been arguably one of the destinations for online comedy for years. I remember watching all of the Derrick Comedy videos years back before Donald Glover won everybody over with his hilarious portrayal of Troy Barnes on Community (let alone taking us to Camp as Childish Gambino). With a series of funny video shorts under their belt, the brand is ready to take the next step in entertainment: films. CollegeHumor is teaming up with independent movie distributor FilmBuff for its feature-length film debut, Coffee Town . Starring It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 's [...]
Seven Questions with Unknown Mortal Orchestra WORDS and PHOTOS by TRAVIS GILLETT I still remember the first time I heard UMO , which means quite a bit coming from the haze and fog that would come to be known as "The Summer of 2012." I still remember the first time I saw UMO , again, one of the 4-5 memories that survived that year. Ruban Nielson's staccato-classic guitar and overt psychedelia-sensual [...]
Whoa! Huge news out of the Disney and Marvel camps as Deadline is reporting that Benicio del Toro ( Traffic ) has been cast for Marvel's upcoming space epic, Guardians of the Galaxy . The James Gunn ( Super ) film is shaping up to be Marvel Studios' next big ensemble film. Just this weekend, Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan was cast for a villain role in the action-comedy about a group of space superheroes. While there's no word on which role del Toro will portray, he's joining a pool of ridiculously talented actors, such as Glenn [...]
My introduction to Takashi Miike started off on the wrong foot. A classmate of mine lent me Audition , emphasizing just how talented the director was. Of course, Audition ended up being a gruesome horror film... from what I heard; I admittedly didn't make it past the first 20 minutes due to the intensity of the film. My next encounter with the beloved director, Ichi the Killer , went way better (and if you haven't seen Ichi the Killer , do it right now, this very second). Since then, Takashi Miike has had his American cult following grow even [...]
After all of the shenanigans that surrounded the director possibilities for the next James Bond film, from Christopher Nolan being offered to a multitude of interesting choices to Sam Mendes officially returning to the franchise, the stage is setting for 007. We already knew that Daniel Craig would be returning as the secret agent, but now his femme fatale counterpart has been found. Yahoo! Movies UK is reporting that the Spanish bombshell Penelope Cruz ( Vicky Cristina Barcelona ) will be the Bond girl in the next film. [...]
BY KEITH MEATTO Seeing two new documentary films about wild animals at Lincoln Center this weekend reminded me that my childhood was not so animal friendly. Neither my mother nor father had owned pets as kids, so we did not either, aside from my brother’s fish tank and two rabbits caged in the garage. That was fine by me. I still prefer museums to zoos, still get jumpy around my friends’ dogs and cats, and once even wrote a short story about a guy who accidentally kills a dog. Still my attitude toward animals has shifted. I now [...]
We had a steady influx of music drops this week, didn't we? Shintendo64 dropped TERRABYTZ , De la Soul made their video return with "Get Away," Vic Mensa teased and dropped the "Orange Soda" video, Sir Michael Rocks finally released While You Wait... , GhostWridah got into the mixtape fun with Flu Game , and Sulaiman and Vic Spencer dropped their collaborative EP, We're Still Disappointed , and ShowYouSuck debuted a new sound with "Watching Walking Dead" (with some pretty amazing artwork, right?). We also had a collection of great movie trailers debut, including Machete Kills , This is [...]
Since we ran the Paradise Garage footage yesterday, here's a look at a major reason the club existed in the first place - Mel Cheren, and the legendary West End label he founded prior to opening the legendary King Street dance club in 1976. Includes music and appearances by Danny Krivit, Louie Vega, Nicky Siano, Joey Llanos, Kevin Hedge, Barbara Tucker, Joi Caldwell, Tony Humphries, Johnny Dynell, Louis Benedetti, and, of course, some of the greatest West End Records releases.
This is a true document of a time and place: Two hours of ecstasy on the final two weekends at possibly the last great large underground dance club in New York City, the Paradise Garage. The quality is a little rough, but you'll get the idea. You may even start dancing. Hat tip to the Paradise Garage NYC tribute page on Facebook.

Film Review: The Kings of Summer
Two teens bang sticks against a giant rusted steel pipe running through the forest; atop the pipe, a third teen dances spastically to the rhythm. The three kids continue like this for a while, devoid of distractions or concerns. They're completely carefree, and we immediately yearn to free ourselves with them. So begins The Kings of Summer, a [...] The post Film Review: The Kings of Summer appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Christopher Abbott From “Girls” Series And His Maison Kitsuné “Western” Shirt
The Connecticut-born actor Christopher Abbott is one of the new faces of New York, due to his role in the much talked-about TV-serie "Girls", and in "Hello, I Must Be Going" film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival 2012. So, it's kind of a pretty privilege to discover his interview [...]
