Listen: Tomo Nakayama - Horses [Soundtrack]

Listen: Tomo Nakayama - Horses [Soundtrack] Words: Saam Das One of the best things about the ongoing Sundance London festival is that it combines music and film, two of my favourite things in the world. These mediums connect everyday of their own accord, of course. Tomo Nakayama 's 'Horses' appears in Sundance film 'Touchy Feely' , performed by Nakayama himself in the film - a powerful scene that brings together the emotional strands of the film quite beautifully. "Favorite Fiddler!" (May 1947)

Jascha Heifetz plays "When You Make Love"
In todays Comics Supplement we'll learn a bit about the early years of synchronized film sound and we'll find out about the USA's favorite fiddler (in 1947 at least). About all that we know about the featured TRUE Comics is that they were produced as a subsidiary to Parents' Magazine , which was edited at the time by Clara Savage Littledale (about whom there is more information here , and also over here ). The books [...]

Movie of the Week: Yello on Snub TV

Movie of the Week: Yello on Snub TV Thanks to the eagle eyed Kyle for this one: Yello has always been a favorite of mine. Wealthy guys from Switzerland playing (at the time) cutting edge electronic-based, latin-tinged, art pop? I'm in! Plus, the mustaches worked and weren't ironic. And, at least in the early days, they were completely independent. Their first couple of albums were released on Ralph Records here in the States. Enjoy this made-for-TV doc from the eighties... Bonus: Yello recently released their own app, Yellowfier [...]

KANETO SHINDO AND THE ATOMIC BOMB (KIND OF): ONIBABA

BY KOLLIN HOLTZ Watch the whole film on Network Awesome One word you should know when watching “Onibaba” is “bukufu.” The word is Japanese, but I promise if you search it you won’t have to clear your history. I’ll save you the trouble though (in case you’re afraid to look it up), and tell you that “bukufu” originally referred to the tent or housing of a military General or Shogunate. Later, during [...]

Film Review: The Look Of Love (2013)

Film Review: The Look Of Love (2013) 'The Look Of Love' (UK Release: 26 April '13) // Words: Saam Das Director Michael Winterbottom and comedian Steve Coogan return for their latest collaborative effort, 'The Look Of Love' , a biopic of the life of Paul Raymond, once the richest man in Britain - built on a hefty property portfolio and scantily clad women. Coogan stars as the entrepreneurial and philandering Raymond, playing the role with an inescapable element of arguably his most famous character, Alan [...]

Hot Docs 2013 Preview

Hot Docs 2013 Preview Mistaken From Strangers Another edition of Toronto's beloved docmentary fim festival Hot Docs Just began yesterday but kicks in to full gear today. And I haven't really taken a gander at the schedule at all. No media accreditation this year so what ever I see this year will be on my own dime, but the festival has graciously given me access to screeners of some of the music documentaries, which I'm very appreciative so expect to see reviews of those in the future. With the Toronto International Film Festival [...]

Movie of the Week - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates: Jukebox Heroes

Movie of the Week - Johnny Kidd & The Pirates: Jukebox Heroes Hugely influential in the UK, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates are perhaps best known for two singles, "Shakin' All Over" (covered by the Who, the Flamin' Groovies, Generation X, and many others), and "Please Don't Touch" (probably best known Stateside via the joint version by Girlschool and Motorhead). Not only did these guys rock, but they had a somewhat nasty image that Malcolm McLaren later took into consideration when forming all of his ideas for his clothing shop, and finding his own little rock & roll band to run. Band [...]

Film Review: Pain & Gain

Pain and Gain Official Trailer #1 (2013) - Michael Bay Movie HD
When you hear the phrase "Directed by Michael Bay," you probably think of some if not all of the following things: giant robots, massive explosions, military hardware, unnecessarily scantily clad and impossibly thin women and an insane amount of quick edits. You probably don't think "passion project." But that's what we get here. In order [...] The post Film Review: Pain & Gain appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Film Review: Iron Man 3 (2013)

Film Review: Iron Man 3 (2013) 'Iron Man 3' (UK Release: 25 April '13) // Words: Saam Das The alarm bells raised by the relative mediocrity of 'Iron Man 2' were somewhat assuaged by Robert Downey Jr 's strong returning performance as Iron Man in 'The Avengers' last year. Previous director Jon Favreau perhaps unsurprisingly did not return to his duties, although the appointment of esteemed screenwriter Shane Black as writer-director was something of a leftfield choice. Black's efforts are [...]

New documentary: A Band Called Death

New documentary: A Band Called Death I've mentioned them before , and then it seemed that interested had waned a bit in this band, but Death is back, baby! Available On May 24th digitally & in theaters, A Band Called Death tells the story of this pretty much unknown all-black 70's punk rock band from Detroit. Looks like a good one... Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band [...]

[Video] Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo

[Video] Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo If there was only one movie genre that will never cease to attract a large audience, it'd be the giant monster genre ("kaiju" for those in the know). From classics like  Godzilla and  King Ghidorah to recent films like  Super 8  and  Cloverfield , giant monster movies will always be an instant source of entertainment. Of course, the level of quality tends to be questionable at best, but the sometimes cheesy tone of such films are part of the genre's charm. So when names from a who's who list of [...]

These United States release documentary

These United States release documentary It would be an understatement to say that I'm a big fan of These United States . Myself and my former mates at WOXY.com were one of the early supporters of their efforts about five years ago and I've done my best to tell you more about their albums, tours and adventures in the years since then. I even 'presented' a show featuring the guys back in 2008, show poster and all. Earlier this week I finally took the time to take in a documentary the band released recently, which was filmed [...]

Movie Breakdown: Mud

Movie Breakdown: Mud People are doing traditional-style reviews all over the web, so we decided to try something different.  In each “breakdown” we’ll take a look at what a film’s marketing lead us to believe, how the movie actually played, and then what we learned from it all.  Read on! The Impression: Matthew McConaughey is a possibly dangerous man who befriends two kids.  The film is directed by Jeff Nichols, who did the rather good Take Shelter . The Reality: Mud [...]

Upcoming Mondo Gallery exhibition featuring Mike Mitchell’s film character portraits

Upcoming Mondo Gallery exhibition featuring Mike Mitchell’s film character portraits Artwork for film promotion can sometimes go undetected or underrated. The posters hung up in theaters across the country tend to be bland, uninspired pieces of work that try to capture some element of the movie that would appeal to casual audiences. Unfortunately, this leads to cookie cutter posters of explosions, weapons, protagonists looking off to the side, etc. However, there are artists and groups of people who are attempting to bring a more artistic nature back to movie poster art. Perhaps the largest and most well known groups is Mondo, an Austin, Texas-based division of the Alamo [...]

Film Review: The Kings Of Summer [Sundance London Review]

The Kings of Summer - Official Trailer [HD]
'The Kings Of Summer' (UK Release: TBC) // Words: Saam Das Premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival as 'Toy's House' , Jordan Vogt-Roberts 's debut feature film is now known as 'The Kings Of Summer' - a title more appropriately capturing the heady sentiments of its central teenage trio.
