Many, many years ago, James Paul McCartney wrote a song asking if his lover would still be with him when he turned 64. For Paul, that year has come and passed, and today, we celebrate loving Macca in his 70th year. Perhaps the most successful songwriter and musician of all time, McCartney's catalogue of 50+ years is deep and rich with timeless songs. To celebrate Sir Paul's 70th year, we've collected a number of great artists paying tribute to the Cute Beatle through covers, ranging from his contemporaries (Bob Dylan) to his collaborators (Dave Grohl) and everyone in [...]

It's been quite a while since I've delved in the world of album covers in my ongoing album art lover series, but I was inspired by Sharon Van Etten's sleeve for her brilliant new album, Tramp (which is streaming on NPR today by the way) to explore the ever-popular face cover. They say that 93% of communication is non-verbal, which perhaps explains why the face-cover has endured for so long. You can usually get a good idea of the album you're about to hear by the expression and composition of the [...]
An album of Buddy Holly covers is pretty daunting. He arguably invented rock ‘n’ roll before the age of 22. His backing band, the Crickets, supposedly inspired the Beatles’ name. And Rivers Cuomo looks just like him. Fortunately, the artists covering Holly’s biggest hits on Rave On Buddy Holly are allowed to interpret the songs however they want. Certain artists bring more of their personalities to the table—Paul McCartney’s spit-flying screaming on “It’s So Easy” and Patti Smith’s Spanish sweet nothings on “Words of Love”, for example—while others, like too-cute-for-school She and Him, stick to sunny '50s pop [...]

Well isn't this just precious. A slew of indie darlings have joined Lou Reed, Patti Smith and even a former Beatle to pay homage to influential early rock 'n' roller Buddy Holly on new tribute album
Whether or not you know every song of Buddy Holly's tragically short career or you only know every word of Weezer's hit song referencing this musical legend, this is a cover album you should be excited about... First of all I want to thank my friend Ryan Hargrave for the heads up about this one! [...]
