"Don't call it a comeback" is usually a phrase uttered self-protectively by musicians who are very much coming back from some degree of obscurity. Dr. Dre wasn't exactly absent during the seven-year stretch between his first and second albums ("California Love," anybody?), but his 1999 sophomore release 2001 is littered with lines like "Ladies pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off/ How, nigga? My last album was The Chronic ." If he ever gets around to releasing Detox , it'll surely be stacked with similar "I never went away" rhetoric (and, undoubtedly, lyrics about headphones.) [...]
Apparently, making the best album of the year isn't enough to keep you from getting the bad kind of attention. When Fiona Apple was arrested for drug possession last week, her name popped up on a lot of gossip sites, and it hasn't left even as her usual touring schedule has resumed; her weight and appearance have been subjects of quite a few clickbait articles. And at a show in Clearwater, Florida on Saturday night, Apple clapped back at all that stuff in an utterly endearing eight-minute ramble, delivered while sitting crisscross applesauce on the edge [...]
Despite its full unwieldy title, Fiona Apple ’s fourth album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is one of the most refined and focused albums to emerge in the sixteen years since Apple’s debut album Tidal . Opening beautifully, the emotionally strained (and slightly disturbing) ‘Every Single Night’ promises an album full of pain and anxiety. Commencing with some slow and simple notes, the track builds up to a spine-tingling release of jittering vocals and intensely captivating lyrics. [...]
Fiona Apple opened one of the biggest shows at South by Southwest this year, at Stubb’s. She came on stage dressed in a lacy pink and black tank top, her long, dirty blond hair pulled back in a high ponytail, her voice edged with gravel and smoke. She didn’t address her audience much, except to tell us, a few songs in, that we were imaginary. “You’re not real,” Apple said. It was an odd thing to say, but no less odd than the hundreds of odd things Apple has said over the course of her sixteen-year career. That [...]

During the infamous 1999 Roseland show where Fiona Apple melted down onstage, her two opening acts were Jimmy Fallon and Jurassic 5, which is a weird thing to think about. And on last night's episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon , Fallon and Apple shared a stage again for the first time since, with Apple making her first TV appearance since a 2006 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Fallon actually did a quick interview with Fallon before her performances where they talked about the incident. She also performed " Anything We Want ," [...]

After last week's explosion of awesome , this week couldn't help but feel something like a letdown in the music-video department. But there was still definitely some heat, especially in our pick for the week's best video, one of the most beguilingly strange and inexplicable clips of the year. Weird anomaly: All five of this week's videos come from solo artists. (That's if we're counting Best Coast as a solo project. Sorry, Bobb Bruno.) Check out our picks below. Read More...

Fiona Apple is 34 years old now. For 17 of those years, almost exactly half of her time on this planet, she's been a public figure, one with the sort of devoted mass-cult following whose devotions can just cripple a creative brain. And she's lived that entire spotlight time - or, at least, the parts of that time when she's been regularly leaving the house - with a sort of raw-nerve candor that we don't often see from celebrities. In the recent interviews she's been doing, she's been laughing off the idea that she shouldn't be talking about [...]

Fiona Apple's excellent new single " Every Single Night " now has a video, and it's a weird one. The clip seems to be obsessed with wildlife, especially creatures with no spines, like the snails that crawl all over Apple in one scene, or the giant octopus that appears in a Paris river behind her in another. (Seriously: There are scenes in this video in which Paris appears to be infested with giant monsters, and they're just there in the background while Apple is singing.) She also snuggles up next to a minotaur in bed and dances down the street [...]

Fiona Apple's long-awaited new album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is finally set to arrive later this month, and we've already heard the early single " Every Single Night ." And now there's another track from the album out on the internet: "Werewolf," a mostly-solo piano ballad that finds Apple furiously comparing a lover to werewolves and chemicals in that ridiculously great verbose way of hers. It's great, and you can hear it below. [...]

At SXSW last month, Fiona Apple debuted three songs from her long-awaited and feverishly anticipated new album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do . One of those songs was "Every Single Night," a turbulent but intricately arranged track that would've fit in nicely on her peerless sophomore album When The Pawn . That songs turns out to be the first single from The Idler's Wheel , and the studio version of it is streaming [...]

Many of us became very, very happy earlier this year when we learned that Fiona Apple was on her way back with new music . Her next album, which she's given the endearingly ridiculous title The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do , will arrive in June. (I'm pretty sure we'll all just end up calling it The Idler Wheel .) The tracklist is also out in the world, and it includes the three songs that she debuted in [...]

HBO's medieval drama Game Of Thrones premieres April 1, and this season's plot involves five different claims to the throne and these respective factions' ongoing clobbering of one another (#TeamRobb). But, yet another mantle is up for grabs, one that involves absolutely nobody getting their head cut off; the claim to "your album of the summer," a competition that includes many of the 25 albums in our list. While bands like Beach House and Bear In Heaven have already earned their inclusion, many details are just beginning to emerge about many of the [...]
Last week, Fiona Apple played her first two solo shows in a few years at SXSW. The one I saw, at Stubb's, was a pretty magical affair - a great talent gutting her way through obvious issues of stage-fright and self-consciousness, rising to the occasion and reminding the world of her own power. During those shows, she debuted three new songs, and we've already posted video of two of them, "Anything We Want" and "Every Single Night." Below, we've got a fan-made video of the final track, an ornate piano-based track called "Valentine." Read More...
... The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do . Compared to the full title of her sophomore album , that's positively restrained! But yeah, let's all agree to just call this thing The Idler's Wheel . According to Pitchfork , Epic is hoping to release the album in late June, which cannot come soon enough.
