The Swedish Sisters that compose the indie/Americana duo First Aid Kit hit Union Transfer Saturday night March 31st, and they absolutely blew me away.  Klara and Johanna Soderberg shared a bill with English trio Peggy Sue, and it was a perfect match.  Peggy Sue’s riffy, electric blues-rock was a well-chosen precursor to First Aid Kit’s strummy folk tunes laden with exquisite harmony.  Their style is somewhat akin to Horse Feathers, Joanna Newsom and Bright Eyes.  Hints of Joni Mitchell peak through as well, especially in some of the songs from their latest record,  The Lion’s Roar , released in January [...]

First Aid Kit are two Swedish sisters, Johanna and Klara Söderberg. They just put out their sophomore album titled The Lion's Roar via Wichita Recordings. 'Emmylou' is the second single off of the album and offers up some outstanding folk driven harmonies that are well worth a listen.

Although officially deemed "folk", 'Emmylou' is downright country, man. But it's okay! Good country alert. Now I'm certainly not a country music fan, I'll hold up my hands. However there's something entirely mellifluous encasing this track from the super young Swedish duo. In fact the sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg are SO young (21 and 18 respectively), perhaps it's that air of wide-eyed juvenescence which so effortlessly banishes those stereotypical country-bumpkin presumptions from this song. Something a bit different from us today, in the form of First Aid Kit. They look just exactly how they sound, huge floppy felt hats and reels of ethnic fabric floating around them. Add to this the flowing long hair and they look like the kind of people you see dancing in a particularly intense manner next to an empty stage on a lazy festival day. With some strong vocals and memorable songs, Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit retruns with it's second album. It's a helluva listen-even if the arranged instrumentation doesn't have that much character to it. WATCH THE REVIEW
