Noah and the Whale rock the Great American Music Hall on November 21st--and it should be fun, fun, fun.

Camden, 16 May 2011 : Instantly, the most noticeable feature of the packed out London show was the diversity of the crowd. The old, the young, the arty, the mainstream, the male and the female all present, the radio success of Noah And The Whale 's last single 'L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.' was almost tangible in the faces of the band's enraptured audience. The band began with an instrumental taken from the latest album, opening out into fan-favourite 'Give A Little Love' in what was the beginning of a brilliant show. The performance was impressive as always, particularly [...]

The sophomore album is a perplexing phenomenon, perhaps even more so when your debut release has been subject to the coveted title of 'critically acclaimed'. In the world of contemporary London folk music, the second album syndrome has produced some gemstones over the past couple of years, notably BRIT-winner Laura Marling's I Speak Because I Can and Noah And The Whale's heartbreakingly beautiful The First Days of Spring . After a two year wait, then, and based on the performance of her peers, expectations for the follow up to Emmy The Great 's [...]

Noah's hair is getting bigger. His real name isn't Noah (it's Charlie) but it's still getting bigger. Maybe he's been channeling David Byrne's talent through his hair considering that "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N." (to me) sounds like a Talking Heads tune, and they both have/had wavy hair, but that might just be me. Just me? The song first showed up back at the end of November and now gets the official treatment in the visual form of a 502s style, sparsely-populated pub in southern England with a guest appearance from Lady Gaga as her career takes a nosedive [...]

It hasn't even been two weeks since I posted Noah And The Whale's first new song from their upcoming third album (and has since been played more than 47,000 times ) and there's another new tune from the London five-piece. This time around it's nowhere near as upbeat and catchy as L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N., but it's still a decent tune, drawing from some of the more chilled and spacey sounds we heard this summer; ethereal backing vocals and slight hints of soothing synths. I'm guessing it'll only be another couple of weeks until we hear another new [...]

Taken from their upcoming third album "Last Night On Earth" set to drop in March , "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N." is our first listen at what we can expect from the quintet outta London. I was big into these guys when their first album "Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down" was released back in 2007 and then kinda went off them with their second album "The First Days Of Spring" , but if I'm gonna judge their upcoming album by this new tune, I think I'm gonna like it. The song was played on Zane Lowe's BBC [...]

Noah And The Whale have announced plans to release their new album later next year. The band will release the follow-up to 2009's ' The First Days Of Spring ' in March 2011. No specific release date has been given for the as-yet untold album.
The title-track from Noah and the Whale 's 2009 LP The First Days of Spring opens with the line "It's the first day of spring and my life is starting over again", and immediately sets the melancholic tone for the remainder of the album. The release, which is the band's sophomore full-length effort, narrates lead singer Charlie Fink's coming to terms (or as it often seems, not coming to terms) with the demise of his relationship with former band member Laura Marling . Whether on purpose, or simply the unintended product of where Fink's head was [...]
Here we are at the end of 2009, and I haven't even written about my favorite album of the year. It's not on many people's (or anyone's) lists that I've seen so far but I love it. It's British indie quartet Noah and the Whale's The First Days Of Spring, released in the States back in early October as an 11-song album with a bonus 45-minute film carrying the same name.I can never quite explain
There are a few great film/album mashups. Two of the more obvious ones are Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon and Toy Story/OK Computer synchronizations. But rare is the instance of finding a film inspired by and created completely in an album's image - an album that stands alone, but also perfectly scores said film. Noah and the Whale accomplish this with their second album release and film debut, The First Days of Spring . At the recent screening of the film (by the same name) at Piano's in NYC, the [...]

John Norris will host a New York City screening of Noah and the Whale's new movie, The First Days of Spring , at Pianos in the Upstairs Lounge on November 1. The movie and the band's new album have the same name, and they are sort of a strange package deal. You may remember seeing the trailer for it right here on The End of Irony ! Space is going to be very limited. In other Noah and the Whale news, they have added New York City to their tour schedule, three shows, in [...]

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic As if The Flaming Lips hadn't already changed the face of experimental pop music already, they release one of their best and least accessible albums of their entire catalog. This album is proof that the band has a perfect understanding of 'evolution of pop music' and recognizes that the game has changed. Hardly a song on Embryonic isn't repeatedly distorted and epically gigantic-taking the listener to the very place the band lives; in the deepest reaches of abstract pop fun. As with any album by the band, it's hard [...]

Stealing is wrong, kids! Read and learn. Two men, a 31 year-old and 40 year-old, have been arrested in Salford, UK for stealing all of Noah and the Whale's band equipment. At a gig in Manchester last week, the band found their trailer broken into with all their equipment GONE. Singer Charlie Fink has stated that some of it was "irreplaceable". The band just released their sophomore album, The First Days of Spring yesterday in the United States. They are also premiering their film (also [...]
Noah And The Whale are one of those beautiful bands that sometimes flood into your ears when your ipod is on random, and you're on a bus through London just when the rain starts to pour down on the streets and against your public transport window... Less of that sentimental drivel though, here's their track "The First Days Of Spring" that reminds me of just that... Their new album The First Days of Spring doesn't drop stateside til October 6, but the latest effort from U.K.'s imaginative pop outfit Noah and The Whale , fronted by Charlie Fink, has already got the Brit crits falling over themselves with accolades: "grandiose beauty" (NME), "breathtakingly ambitious" (Mojo), "magical...inspired" (Q). And they're right this time. "Big picture music that remains grounded in melodic pop", we say. Want proof? Check out "Blue Skies"...Understated, elegiac break-up music usually doesn't sound quite this grandly cinematic. More here . [...]

Since January 2009, alt-folksters Noah & The Whale has been in the studio working on their second full length LP, 'The First Days of Spring' . The new album, due to be released on October 6th, is more electric than previous works and there's a running narrative throughout the album describing the disillusion of a relationship. Along with the album release, Charlie Fink is making a film that will run the entire length of the album, also entitled The First Days of Spring . Forthcoming single [...]

Noah and the Whale are one of those bands that have nearly everything spot on for me. First off, their name is a tribute to Noah Baumbach and his film The Squid and the Whale. Then they quite often sign their posts as 'Sic Transit Gloria' (phrase from Wes Anderson's Rushmore). Even their music style (a pop-folk mix) brings memories of Belle & Sebastian or the Magic Numbers. What else do you need to make this band an instant favorite? Well, perhaps some really amazing music and a stunning new album! [...]
Gone are the bow ties and pastels, the funny hats and suspenders. Gone too, mainly, the overly sunny folk/pop of the striking '08 debut album Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down . But for London's Noah and the Whale , the sure and graceful step forward with new October 6 album The First Days of Spring signals the fulfillment of enormous promise. There are albums and then there are albums -- and you know what we mean -- and this is one of those enormously influential albums that not only define an [...]
