Often times you get the feeling that albums are written about a particular relationship that the songwriter endured. Sometimes the lamenting continues across several albums. In 2002, lead singer of Cloud Cult , Craig Minowa, lost his infant son - much more emotionally taxing than a relationship that went south. Not surprisingly, any song Cloud Cult has released since 2002 has been influenced by the event. Yet, what is so compelling about Cloud Cult is Craig Minowa's ability to take a situation that might normally translate into something dark and/or depressed and turn them into songs about the beauty [...]

A couple of weeks ago Pitchfork revealed their People's List , an interactive list of the best albums that have been released since the site's formation in 1996. Their database to pull from was extensive, and if there was something you wanted to add to your own list but they didn't have it, you could just add it yourself. So I got the team together and we fleshed out our top 100 albums from 1996-2011 over the course of the last seven days, but instead of just making the list I went one further and [...]

(Photo from Photoderek ) Toronto - Eight years ago today, I packed up my bags, bought a one way ticket, flew across the country and moved to what I think is the greatest city in Canada - Toronto. It was a pretty easy decision to move from Edmonton, I had grown increasing bored with the city. I had originally wanted to move to go to other universities but my inability to go to high school classes consistently and pay attention to University submission deadlines put a disruption to that plan. However, after I graduated, I was able [...]

This may be weird, but I always think of concerts as a kind of consummation - like finally getting the chance to be alone with that special squeeze you've been sweatin' for a while. The relationship between you, a band, and a song are finally at the most intimate, whether you're in the corner of a bar or on the muddy fields of Glastonbury. And for all the time you've spent peeling away the layers of a track, analyzing every note, every word, every minute detail about down to the the last wavelength, in concert the pressure is now on [...]

Image via Hipster Runoff Ask any member of the CoS news team what keeps them up at night and they'll likely tell you it's the excitement/fear of Radiohead dropping an album at 4:45 AM. That's exactly what happened earlier this morning; fortunately, Harry Painter and Mike Roffman are insomniacs. But Radiohead's surprise new album wasn't the only bombshell of February 14th, 2011. From Arcade Fire's Grammy win to Zooey Deschanel's new tv gig, today's music headlines were as hot as they are heavy. So what better way to remember the most [...]

In a conversation with one of our local blogger friend's, Sonic Itch Mike, I decided that I really needed to take a close look at which spots on any given album are the killer spots to put your hits. Some people think that the immediacy really makes Track 1 the best, but I'm going to look a little closer at this idea. I mean, there are hundreds of classic albums out there, and surely they ascribe to this great song placement formula. [...]

The month that has been declared as "Rocktober" kicks off this week, and despite the fact that many of our good friends are trapped in Vegas for a an expensive schmooze-fest with the indie rock elite, and I'm still kind of bummed that I won't be able to escape to LA for what appears to [...]

Living in the capital of Canada, (Ottawa, Ontario), the last thing you start to expect from your city is to be rich in the arts. I mean, with parliament a stone’s throw away from any part in the city, Ottawa is more about politics than it is about the arts. This summer is different, though. Every July, the city puts on a 10 day music festival called Ottawa Bluesfest in which they bring many different musicians (not all blues, last years before they brought Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Fergie, Wyclef Jean and Kanye West). Although there are usually [...]

A few weeks ago, to kick-off the Memorial Day holiday, we launched our first summer mixtape of 2010. Due to the huge success of that mix, we started work on putting together Mix No. 2 shortly thereafter - and here are the results (work on Mix No. 3 is already in progress). Obviously, these summer [...] Related posts:Halloween Indie Rock Songs, Vol I: Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, The Kissaway Trail, Flaming Lips, Beach House, Cat Power... Bonnaroo is over. The tents have been taken down, the vans packed up, and the last few drinks downed. The drum circles and drug-induced dancing have ceased. Badly sunburned college students, their cool-minded professional counterparts, and aging hippies continue to head back to the daily grind. The clean-up crew is probably still sweeping up cigarette butts and discarded toilet paper rolls as I type this. In short, one of the key musical events of the season ended. But you know what? We've still got a lot of summer ahead of us. There is still so much to report apart from festivals. A slew of albums are [...]
