The Flaming Lips have nothing left to prove. They've been through all of the stages necessary for "legendary" status: off-their-feet noise rock band, underground group-du-jour, psych-pop hit-makers, experimental neo-psychedelia collective, and daily headline-making, Guinness Wo rld Record-breaking phenomenon. So, what does a band do when they have nothing left to prove? Anything they want. Equal parts beauty and aggression, The Terror is a confident, cohesive record from a band that reminds me time and time again why I love them. While other Flaming Lips records are full of instrumental bombast [...]

Words by Brendan All Hallow's Eve is upon us! Wednesday is the day of celebration, the dance of the dead. There's no need for a suave/slutty costume; there's no need for candy; there's no need for jack-o'-lanterns and cobwebs and tombstones. All you need are some friends, some pumpkin beers, and some good fucking music. That's where we come in. Here's a mixtape of Halloweeny tunes for you to play at your party. Some of these bands are as old as the hills, and some I quite literally just heard about [...]
It goes without saying that the fall mixtape is my favorite of the year. I've spent the last two weeks narrowing this down to what hopefully will be as rad to hear on your end as it is each time I listen through it on mine. Getting the closest friends, setting your destination for the [...]

I read Dante's Inferno when I was 12. Even at that age, despite being an advanced reader, near 700-year old Italian poetry can go over your head. The exposure to Dante's visionary ignited vivid ideas of what hell, heaven, and limbo look and feel like, which stick with me to this day. Having only read a third of the Divine Comedy describing hell, I assumed the other two. Limbo, to me, is a droll waiting room at a psychiatrist's office featuring cream colored walls, cheap off-brand chairs designed to help improve posture, an irritating ceiling fan, six year-old women's fitness magazines, and a [...]
Nel recente disco pieno di duetti "The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends" Coyne e soci reinterpretavano la storica canzone british-folk “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” con Erykah Badu . Ovviamente [...]
The Flaming Lips ’ Record Store Day release Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends is getting a re-release on June 26, but it’s got an extra track tacked on too, in case you didn’t get enough Heady Fwends from the original. “Tasered and Maced” features Ghostland Observatory ’s Aaron Behrens , narrating the story of how he got, um, tasered and maced, over a woozy, dark synth wobble. Aside from a few effects on the vocals, the Lips leave Behrens ’ tale of woe intact – and all the more chilling. Check [...]

The Flaming Lips will be re-issuing their Record Store Day release The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends on June 26th via Warner Bros. Records, and this time around the release will differ just a little bit from its RSD counterpart. In the rerelease, the Chris Martin-aided track "I Don't Want You to Die" has been replaced by an unreleased track featuring Aaron Behrens of Ghostland Observatory. The song, titled "Tasered and Maced," sees Behrens unloading a series of stories about cops, tasering and macing, monsters, and kicking his friends in the testicles. Listen to it below (via [...]

Earlier this week we got an entirely unnecessary new Beach Boys song , and today we get The Flaming Lips covering one of their masterworks, Pet Sounds' centerpiece "God Only Knows." As they've been known to do, the Lips take the original's modest psychedelia and, for better or worse, turn it up to an 11. This pulsating, riffing mess is made sweet, however, by Wayne Coyne's fantastic and uncanny take on Brian Wilson . Beach Boys purists may not be into it, but fans of [...]
The Flaming Lips clearly have some great Heady Fwends out there, as evidenced by their Record Store Day release The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends ’ impressive list of collaborators: Erykah Badu, Nick Cave, Coldplay's Chris Martin, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Ke$ha, Biz Markie ; you name it, Wayne Coyne probably wrote them a nice tweet asking for vocal stems. You’re probably going to head straight for that Ke$ha track, “2012,” and we don’t blame you, because it is actually pretty good? Ke$ha sounds surprisingly at home over the [...]
