Several artists hitting new peaks of maturity & even, though some might hesitate over the term, profundity touch down in Bristol on Saturday. If you're remotely within reach of St John the Baptist , don't miss this second Sound Architects show . Denmark's great p j ø rgensen , who starts his UK tour the night before with a doubtless essential live set on Resonance FM , will feature alongside [...]

Beguiling Being in Nature via “Farewell, Brother” from latest Rural Colours release, Afar, Farewell . Who’s doing all this Germanic-sounding Being-in-Nature? It’s offthesky finding fellow-feeling with Man Watching The Stars , known to his Mum as Brendan Paxton. Bristle-based bros Fluid Radio enthuse ‘…these five tracks quiver with a tension that evokes the twilight moment between daylight and darkness, and thrum with a grandeur borrowed from mountains and canyons,’ clinching the deal with ‘…what is most [...]

Gilded 's stunning debut album Terrane has been garnering a plethora of plaudits all over the shop lately. Well, when I say 'shop' I mean 'Internet'. And more specifically, websites Delusions of Adequacy , Fluid Radio and Cool Perth Nights . There's also a rather excellent track-by-track article on Mess+Noise . And, if that wasn't enough, Gilded recently launched the album in Perth and are coming to other Australian cities later in the month. How good is that? Super-good. Tour dates as follows: Saturday 20 October @ The [...]
Piano. Bowed metal. Percussion. Repetition. Space. Texture… These are our basic ingredients; our oil, salt, pepper, spice, flour, water. We can draw on one tradition, or another – personal, geographic, familial. Our tools, our skillets, griddles, pans; these are our experience, our context, and our time. Whatever the combination, we try to make something. Trying to work out what that is, why that record is good, why this one is a disappointment, why this one we will play again and again, depends on so much, can be such a personal decision, that in the end, the [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the official release of Terrane , the debut album by Australian experimental/ambient duo Gilded . The album is now available for purchase on CD and digitally . Gilded brings together the similar but distinct musical directions of West Australian experimental musicians Matt Rösner and Adam Trainer, forging a new approach to composition and sound creation that is based as much around rhythm and repetition as it is around drone and abstraction. The pair have released work seperately on labels such as 12K, Room40, hellosQuare, New Weird Australia, and [...]

Gilded's stunning forthcoming debut Terrane has already been drumming up some amazing reviews and getting heavy doses of Australian radio love. The album has just been glowingly reviewed at Fluid Radio where it was lauded as "one of the best albums you'll hear this year" . The Thousands were full of praise in their recent review saying, " there’s nothing that sounds quite like Gilded. " The track 'Moth Food' was chosen as Dave Cutbush's track of the day on RTRFM's Out To Lunch program [...]
Markus Mehr ’s music is hard to pin down. It crosses through multiple genres, equally comfortable with industrial noise, lilting ambience and electronica-style sampling. On is also the second part in a triptych of albums (the previous one titled In , the next to be called Off ) which, apart from their titles and artwork, have little obvious connection. Most pairs/triplets of albums would be expected to have some unified theme, a narrative connecting each instalment, but Mehr seems perfectly happy to leave this undefined, a puzzle to be solved by the listener or [...]
Excerpt: "Hidden Shoal Recordings continues to consolidate its reputation for unearthing consistently exciting, engaging and intriguing material with the forthcoming release of Un Giorno Sospeso by Elisa Luu... The eight tracks on Un Giorno Sospreso have a grand electronic air, counterbalanced by skittering textural flairs and enigmatic organic tones. The melodic base is solid, and there are reassuring hooks for the listener to grab onto if they require them. The approach to many of the tracks is quite dynamic; many of the pieces steer away from their introductions, developing into different beasts from what you expect [...]

Elisa Luu's new album Un Giorno Sospeso , now available as a digital download and to pre-order on CD from the Hidden Shoal Store , has just received a glowing review over at the excellent Fluid Radio . The album's lead single, 'Se Fosse Per Me', which is available for free download , has also just been reviewed over at the equally excellent Luna Kafe and The Dadada .
In February 2007, Hidden Shoal Recordings introduced Bay Area recording artist Wes Willenbring. His debut was named Somewhere Someone Else, and was greeted with that particular brand of scattered enthusiasm unique to an obscure release, including a Headphone Commute review stating, “Modern classical hasn’t felt this young in years!” The album certainly had its moments, between the slanting and morose piano scribbling of “Aperture” and the pulsing, insistent “In A Quiet Dark Room.” (The track “As You Fade Away” was featured in a recent episode of Skins). Willenbring’s sophomore release was Close But Not Too Close (October 2009), [...]
Wes Willenbring's superb third album Weapons Reference Manual has just received glowing reviews over at Fluid Radio and Rave magazine . The album can be streamed in full at the Hidden Shoal Store , and is available for pre-order, with CDs shipping on 4 May. Do it!

It's probably not my last mea culpa for an overlooked 2011 release, regrettably . Still, Felicia Atkinson 's O-RE-GON (Home Normal; Spotty stream ) is an indisputably great record that these ears only managed to connect with this year - & which has to be clumsily co-opted into our Festive 50 + 50 ... Anyone who knows Felicia's mesmerising [...]

Festive Greetings from Hibernate and Home Normal door Fluid Radio op Mixcloud

Electroacoustic übersite Fluid Radio has added a user forum to its webzine/record label/radio station/online retailer/photography/iPhone app format. Seriously, for the website you thought already had everything... In our first of two novelty sites, The Best Band Ever promises to take user-generated band rosters and create a mock band biography. It's fun, but it's powered externally, so it's a bit choppy. For example, try typing in Jeff Buckley, Niel Peart, David Crosby, Tori Amos, and Justin Bieber, which results in The Peart Justin of Buckley , a "5-piece band [...]

A sextet of tracks these ears would have been much the poorer for not having heard. Mostly from new or imminent releases ( Pascal Savy 's ravishing warm flood of an EP, Liminal [Feedback Loop], David Wenngren & Christopher Bissonnette 's deep journeying, darkly glowing The Meridians of Longitude and Parallels of Latitude [Home Normal] & Illuha 's delicate, faintly off-kilter [...]

No excuse for donor fatigue in the face of this year's epic charity compilations from birds of passage , Antiopic / Thrill Jockey , Hibernate / Fluid Radio & Unseen ( previous coverage ) - a touching counter-tsunami of creativity & generosity to benefit Japan & New Zealand... Kanshin , Hibernate & Fluid's contribution, is a 31-track [...]
Excerpt: "There is no maelstrom, no swell of overwhelming sound. Antonyme’s first full-length work, The License to Interpret Dreams, is defiant in its fragility; in fact, the work is so over-wrought that it teeters on the point of collapse. It seems its purpose is to carry on a prolonged moment of respite despite the fact that it shudders under its weight and poignancy. Each piece is a wonder, much like encountering different facets of the same being, finding something new to love about someone: an unintended twitch, a new wrinkle, freckle. To think you know something or someone so deeply and [...]

( email | facebook | twitter ) Good question. Given that 1KB of data is made up of 160 million electrons, and that one electron weighs about 210 -31 pounds, and that Esther Burns' - quite mental - debut La Valeur Du Vide claims some 79,000KB of disk space, Microsoft Excel tells us the result is 2.510 -18 pounds. At about this point in any scientifically-minded article is where you'd find mass comparisons between the quantifiable (read: meaningless figures like [...]
