It is risky to tackle a style that fuses several aspects of an overlooked past, particularly in regard to stylistic movements that took place decades ago. This was a time before our generation's fascination with excess took hold on all forms of media. Popular music has always aligned with the cultural times and the [...]
Tonight's song comes from John O'Regan, and his indie-pop/electronic-folk (yeah I'm genre tagging something electronic-folk) side-project Diamond Rings; his main project is fronting the Toronto-based indie-rock act The D'Ubervilles. As far as I can tell, the ridiculously charming All Yr Songs can only be found on a 7-inch vinyl split-release featuring Diamond Rings and Kingston, Ontario's PS I Love You. Unfortunately, said release has been sold out and I have no leads on how to get more music from Diamond Rings. If anyone has any information on a forthcoming release from the band, let me know. Until then, you [...]
Sleep Whale - Make Another Picture I only recently became familiar with Sleep Whale, although it seems they've built up some noise over the past few... (Visit my blog for more!)

We've been covering a lot of folk here on TBW recently, and for good reason. There are just so many good folkish bands appearing on the radar. One blog that if it had any theme might be a good folk leaning is that of Song, by Toad and lo and behold, Matthew's little spin off record label put out another gem in a split 123 of two delightfully different folk bands in Loch Lomond and The Builders & the Butchers ( MySpace ). I can't give him all the credit for this [...]

Bosque Brown - Went Walking Lovely track from a powerful-voiced little lady. I have a thing for female folk singers. Also, I suggest you give So Loud a listen .

Billboard has finally gotten over some of its archaic charting methods (Catalogue albums, anyone?) and is going to include a 15 spot chart for fold music beginning 2010. This will cater to artists like Ani DiFranco, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and their fans. This also comes with the revamping of the Billboard 200. It's still confusing, but better. Not many Australian teenagers can claim to be Brian Wilson's pen pal and the son of a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra ex-gangster. Pascal Babare can. He releases his debut album 'Thunderclap Spring' on 23rd November through Tokyo and London based indie blackmaps. It includes an introspective cover of Joy Division's 'Ceremony', which you may sample below. Download 'Ceremony' . Buy at blackmaps .

Guy Clark hit my radar after I got into Steve Earle in the 90's. I started digging deeper into the "outlaw" singer/songwriters from the state of Texas. People like Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely, and Townes Van Zandt. I still have a long way to go with exploring the rich catalogs of these guys. My most recent pick-up on eMusic was The Essential Guy Clark , which I will make a point of spending plenty of time with in the near future. I heard "Let Him Roll" on Sirius [...]
Today's song comes in from the Raleigh, North Carolina indie-folk (sometimes described as nu-folk) band Bowerbirds . Consisting of members Beth Tacular, Phil Moore, and Matt Damron, Bowerbirds have released 2 full-length LPs since their debut EP "Danger at Sea" in 2006. Ghost Life can be found on the band's most recent album Upper Air , released on July 7th of this year. The band is currently in the throws of a US tour that is scheduled to wrap up in Atlanta, Georgia on February 12th of next year; a full tour schedule can be found on the [...]

OK, so my victimhood of changiness shorted you a Vedge yesterday, so here's another double-stuff, from a fella who deserves a mega-stuff. I know all of you probably golf a lot, so I don't have to tell you about how there's always some player tagged as the BPNTWAM - the Best Player Never To Win A Major (tournament, smart guy). There's always someone who clearly has the talent and work ethic to beat the best, but it just hasn't come together for some reason. That's the sort of thing you read about Jeffrey Lewis, who is [...]

This new discovery and album is one that found its way to my inbox from one of my very good German friends. I don't know why Europe has such good taste in music and people (Do the Germans know my wife is German??? Maybe...) but they seem to just be the right people to talk to when you are looking Slowcoustic. This album "Isbells" is the self titled new release from Isbells (obviously) over on Zeal Records this past October 23rd. Isbells are not German like I might have lead you to believe, but are based out of [...]
Anno nuovo, album nuovo. Nel 2009 "Hombre Loco", nel 2010 (a gennaio) "End Times", da cui arriva "Little Bird". MP3 Eels - Little Bird

Born in February 1994 when Xavier Demerliac (guitar and brass) and Jean Stéphane Brosse (piano and accordion) met and transformed into a quintet in 1996, L'Attirail takes Balkan folk & klezmer into new & cinematic territories with their 2007 album Kara Deniz , and continues to do so on their recently released "Wilderness". And it's exactly their progressive tone and soundtrackist mentality that sets them apart from traditional Eastern European folklore/ klezmer bands. There's a distinct Spaghetti Western influence on Wilderness (as the name suggests) with sliding guitars and galloping rhythms; I may not be correct but [...]
The first time I heard "Highway Patrol," I was extremely pulled in by Rolla Olak's powerful vocals and how it echoed lightly through soft drums and haunting guitar lines. Olak's LP is a solid, dark & moody folk rock album. Here are my two favorites off the album, both of which have been stuck in [...]

Broken-hearted folk, power pop and soul Ardent Studios , famed both for their original productions by Big Star and the raft of overflow sessions hosted for Stax, is still a working concern. Recent visitors have included Robyn Hitchcock, Klaus Voorman, Jack White and many more local, national and international luminaries. Less well-known is that the Ardent Music record label provides a modern day parallel to the original Ardent Records upon which Big Star's albums and singles were released. The label's latest is the debut by Star & Micey, [...]

Music freely available online is always appreciated, even moreso when it means I don't have to resort to the morally ambiguous hosting of the music myself. There are some folks who believe this is the way of the future, and even though I always end up buying physical copies, the word of mouth potential for free distribution on the internet is amazing. Now, these dudes ended up on my list while finally catching up on the catalog over at Quote Unquote Records . Folksy, punksy, dudes with [...]

Tobacco Pat has a penchant for providing me with EPs of dark Americana tinged singer songwriter projects. The third and final installment of his "Apocalypse" series has just been self released and it falls into place quite nicely. You might remember an earlier mention of this project here on the blog and once again this installment comes in the form of 5 tracks in "The Destroyer" package. This one feels like it brings it all down with more energy than the previous EPs, it is definitely a raw lo-fi journey! [...]
