by teepoo Here's a new one from Said the Whale ! Their new album is set to release March 6th and I can't wait!
from left: Jay Huling, Colin Scot, Kevin Shipman and Carl Berg The What's New have always fascinated record collectors: a group mistakenly listed as a Florida band, they released two EPs in France but nothing in the U.S. Their story starts with the Yachtsmen, a folk group founded by students at Long Beach City College in 1959. They became regulars at Disneyland in Anaheim, releasing an LP on Disney's Buena Vista label (BV-3310), "High and Dry with The Yachtsmen" in 1961. On the LP [...]

The gradual rising of energy and emotion on "Wolves and Owls," which opens Buxton's Nothing Here Seems Strange , reminds me of Spirit, and of (very) vintage Steve Miller, as much as it calls to mind artists who fall into the Alt. Country and/or Folk-Rock categories. That's how it feels when a band's intensely present. And how it feels when a sense of wonder permeates everything: Life isn't taken for granted. Air isn't taken for granted. Pain, joy, fire, and ice are noticed; heralded. A sucker for melody, I hear nothing noteworthily [...]
First Aid Kit is made up of sister Klara Söderberg and Johanna Söderberg from Sweden. Their sound is fundamentally similar to that of Fleet Foxes as they create folk songs with much more life and enthusiasm. Sprawling acoustic guitars, upbeat drums and pianos, and flutes and horns accompany the girls on much of their new LP entitled The Lion's Roar . First Aid Kit have surely matured not only with their song writing abilities but also with their sound as a whole. The production has gotten better too as the young and talented Mike Mogis has taken over at the controls. [...]

by teepoo One of my favourite husband and wife duos is probably Whitehorse because they don't have to be all cute when they're in duet. For example in Killing Time Is Murder there's a pretty dark, dirty and naughty atmosphere about it. The song comes off their self-titled debut that was released last October. In the last couple of years, Iceland's sextet, Of Monsters and Men have made a name of themselves in the alternative folk scene. To follow their ever so wholesome EP Into the Woods , the band has a full length album under Universal Republic Records set on April 3, 2012. This collection is entitled My Head is an Animal . Of Monsters and Men initially grabbed our attention with "Little Talks". "Little Talks" and along with most of their music, features the delightful voice harmonies of Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar "Raggi" Þórhallsson. Their [...]

After years of touring together, the singer/ songwriter brother-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone recently separated and are each launching their own own solo projects. "Broken Brights" is a strong start for Angus Stone 's first single. Angus Stone - "Broken Brights" From Angus- "These writings from the record are of great shift for me in the story telling of these past four years of traveling. Playing this record live is going to be quite a euphoric walk for me. I'm ready at the end of the year [...]

When a title begins with "The First ", it automatically takes you to a flashback of your first personal experience. It could be your first kiss, first day, or the single from M.Ward's forthcoming album "The First Time I Ran Away". The anticipated collection, A Wasteland Companion is out on April 10th via Merge Records . To help convey a childish nostalgia, the music video of "The First Time I Ran Away" is a creative animation of an oriental girl running away with her llama friend. The video was directed by Joel Trusell and the song was recorded [...]
