Merry Christmas! A few days ago I released my yearly Christmas single. It's called " One Last Wish For Christmas " and it's recorded partly in the US and partly in Sweden (thank you internet). The single has been very well received and here's a selection of quotes from some writers around the globe: "One Last Wish For Christmas" has the feel of a simple and intimate Indie Folk song [...]
In honor of this holiday weekend, one in which perhaps more families get together in the US than any other four day period of the year, to enjoy food, family and fellowship, here is a brief tape of one such American family, reflecting two very different times, one being the point it was recorded, just over 50 years ago, and one being the time reflected in a story told on the tape, perhaps another 50 or 60 years before that. The Matriarch here (and I'm assuming facts about her not in evidence by calling her that) was [...]

The people in Talvik's songs are weary, but they've also, miraculously, retained the stars in their eyes, those blazing gleams that they'll be damned if they ever let get rattled or ripped from them. Sofia Talvik on Daytrotter My Daytrotter session is released today, and for all of you who asked about which album the Wichita Lineman cover is on, and I've said none - here it is! For all of you who [...]
We have suffered something of a deluge 'new folk artists' from Britain in recent times. In reality, by and large, they have been purveyors of substandard happy-clappy pop, with a few notable exception of course. One such exception is London singer-songwriter Marika Hackman, whose folk style will undoubtedly see comparisons to Laura Marling. These are potent songs of enigmatic beauty with a striking vocal delivery, sounding both wise and [...]

Two free albums that sound good played at the same time: Dr. SETI (aka Dr. H. Paul Shuch) sings songs about his namesake and day job, the Search For Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Book him for your next party! He considers himself a singing ambassador for the hunt for little green men, and his acoustic folk tunes, some parodies of oldies like Patsy Cline's "Crazy" or John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads," are brimming over with not only his deep faith in the existence of aliens, but with endearing enthusiasm, [...]

photo by pirate_renee I've been away on a small holiday for a week, so I missed Friday's regular "Loved Songs" post. Somewhere between the hot and balmy environment of the Great Hall, the old world appeal of the venue itself, and the otherworldly voice of the night's performer, I thought I had entered not a concert, but some kind of collective purgatory in which the audience and I were vicariously absolving our sins through 21-year-old folk singer Laura Marling . Thankfully, it appears that I was just at a concert and did not, in fact, prematurely perish, but even that momentary lapse speaks to the kind of night it was on Friday at the Great Hall. [...]
Folk Songs Of Canada Now is an interesting project. Henry Adam Svec has taken it upon himself to compile a record the documents Canada's rich folklore history. The album includes contributions from artists such as Al Tuck, Laura Barrett, Wax Mannequin, Olenka Krakus of Olenka & the Autumn Lovers, and novelist/Rock Plaza Central's Chris Eaton. Here's what's involved: I. Bonnie Lasses Come, You

Stories told, songs sung. It's simple this history of ours. Tales of murder, pain, love and loss are written daily and forgotten instantly, but the best are passed from generation to generation like currency, land or genes. In a time where the public is more consumed by those that find and hoard to fuel their own greed or sickness, folklorist Henry Svec - last heard around here under the anonymity of The CFL Sessions - spends his time unearthing stories and documenting melodies for the community. Folk Songs of Canada Now [...]

Joe Purdy is a storyteller armed with immense musical talent — a crucial combination for a folk-based singer-songwriter. With emotionally driven lyrics that speak of loved ones, old friends, and running away (amongst other things), his songs always manage to strike a chord with me. On Sunday, he performed a brooding set that left the Horseshoe crowd completely satisfied. Opening for Purdy were his touring companions, The Milk Carton Kids . Although this two piece band is only six weeks old, I was still impressed by their set and felt their music set the tempo for [...]
VIDEO PREMIER: When ever there is a #2 in a song title I think of the melvins #2 Pencil track. Don't ask me why it's irrelevant here. This new The Nico Blues - "Folk Song Number Two" video is shot entirely on GoPro Cameras and is as folky sounding as kraftwork sounds like van halen. What? Yeah, seriously folks if Mitch Easter started producing the shins or superchunk he'd have them sounding like The Nicos Blues. Great band. Enjoy! Elsie's Hooked on Second Chances MP3 by [...]

nathaniel rateliff - early spring till (live @ later with jools holland) [the journey from small town missouri to singing on the BBC jools holland stage must be a surreal one for singer/songwriter nathaniel rateliff, but his year of touring incessantly and finding his fan base one performance at a time is reason to fall for this talented troubadour. just press play and let this beautiful raw and haunting song win you over. it is indeed special!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

sam brookes - in weeks [nothing like the beautiful voice of a 24 year old singer/songwriter to make your weekend soundtrack perfect. currently working on his debut album, sam is slowly crafting his live performances by doing some key gigs around the UK alongside scott matthews, cherry ghost and a tour with ray davies. check out the debut single 'in weeks' as it's gotten multiple plays due to it's mesmerizing and gentle ferocity... now if someone can please tell sam to NEVER shoot a video standing in front of a mirror all will be perfect!] want [...]
