JIM JAMES + COLD SPECKS @THE FONDA THEATRE

JIM JAMES + COLD SPECKS @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Trading in his big fuzzy boots as frontman of My Morning Jacket, Jim James glided across the stage looking quite dapper in a suit as he played his solo debut album Regions of Light and Sound of God in its entirety and much much more at The Fonda. 'I used my state of the art Technology Supposed to make for better living Are we better human beings We've got our wires all crossed Our tubes are all tied And I'm straining [...]

PHOTOS: YO LA TENGO @THE FONDA THEATRE

PHOTOS: YO LA TENGO @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande As the ageless Ira Kaplan (vox/guitars/keyboards/drum) pointed out - Yo La Tengo doesn't mind playing in the shadows of the Capitol Building. The Hoboken, NJ band performed two completely different sets at The Fonda from their extensive catalog. With three large, painted trees adorning the stage, the first set consisted of a stripped down, softer set with a "flurry" of songs from Fade . Georgia Hubley (vox/drums/guitar) made my heart stop on "Cornelia and Jane" as her husband Kaplan played ever so gently on guitar. [...]

When you have a discography as extensive as Yo La Tengo, you can open for yourself by playing a stripped down acoustic set before coming back with a full electric performance. Yo La Tengo is out on the road supporting their excellent new Matador record release, Fade . Check out the photos in the gallery above. [...]

PHOTOS: KILLING JOKE @THE FONDA THEATRE

PHOTOS: KILLING JOKE @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande The Cinco de Mayo celebrations around LA were nothing compared to what was going on inside the walls of The Fonda. This year being their 34th anniversary, the four founding members of English post-punk/industrial rock legends Killing Joke brought the Singles Tour to a hungry crowd. Jaz Coleman (lead vox), Geordie Walker (guitar), Martin "Youth" Glover (bass), and Big Paul Ferguson (drums) played songs from KJ's entire catalog, even the first song they ever wrote. The setlist was huge (literally). Coleman gave a shout out to the late [...]

Nick Cave y su tenebroso coro de niños en blanco y negro para el video de “Mermaids”

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Mermaids

BONOBO + EL TEN ELEVEN @THE FONDA THEATRE

BONOBO + EL TEN ELEVEN @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande It's so refreshing to go to a show without looking through someone's cell phone. Most music fans were completely "there" at The Fonda last night as Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, brought his latest The North Borders accompanied by a band that played almost every instrument imaginable. I couldn't help noticing one guy in the string section who also plays with Portugal the Man. This guy is always having a good time. Vocals were angelic as Szjerdene graced the stage on many numbers. Every musician on stage [...]

BAT FOR LASHES @THE FONDA THEATRE

BAT FOR LASHES @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande The heat was still on at The Fonda as Bat for Lashes made a stop in LA after two sizzling sets at Coachella. The lovely Natasha Khan was all smiles as fans sang along to tunes from the latest The Haunted Man and many more. I was secretly hoping Khan would bust out her fantastic cover of The Cure's "A Forest." Nevertheless, Khan's beautiful voice soothed all souls as people swayed and couples embraced. "Daniel" ended the set with everyone dancing. [...]

Review – Bat for Lashes @ Fonda Theatre – Hollywood, CA – 4/23/13 Review - Bat for Lashes @ Fonda Theatre - Hollywood, CA - 4/23/13 This review of Bat for Lashes comes from Chris Modisette, someone who I consider to be one of LA’s greatest concert goers.  Chris has written review’s for YTC from time to time over the year and is incredible knowledgeable and insightful when it comes to critiquing concerts. Thanks for the review Chris!  – Lorn Bat for Lashes @ Fonda Theatre Concert Review [...]

Ticket Giveaway: Next Level Presents Roksonix, Brown & Gammon, Trampa x Soloman, Coma

Ticket Giveaway: Next Level Presents Roksonix, Brown & Gammon, Trampa x Soloman, Coma Trying to figure out what to do this Saturday night? Look no further because our friends over at Future Events have given us three pairs of tickets to give to three lucky readers to see Roksonix, Brown & Gammon, Trampa and Coma at the Fonda Theatre. These DJs are coming  from their hometowns overseas to LA to raise quite the circus (pun intended). Repping Circus Records, Roksonix and Brown & Gammon will be bringing some massive bass that'll be sure to have the walls vibrating. But wait, we can't forget DJs like Trampa, Soloman and Coma who will have [...]

PHOTOS: LA ROUX @THE FONDA THEATRE

PHOTOS: LA ROUX @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Brandon Winters Rarely have I ever heard of a headlining artist face a crowd without any opening act, but on Thursday night at the Fonda Theatre, La Roux welcomed the ecstatic audience. It has been close to four years since their debut album dropped and dominated charts globally while racking in numerous prestigious awards and nominations. The years have not had any impact on the groups fandom, as droves of women began screaming in excitement at the very first note of “In For The Kill” was heard being sung from the off stage [...]

FRANZ FERDINAND + PALMA VIOLETS @THE FONDA THEATRE

FRANZ FERDINAND + PALMA VIOLETS @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi There were a lot of concert options going on this night, but it’s safe to say none of them had the dance floor shaking as much as Franz Ferdinand did at the Fonda. Acknowledging this LA date was a special one, the Coachella veterans (2013 marks the Scottish group’s third year) gave fans a hell of a time. Playing for almost two hours, Franz Ferdinand’s set included both hits and brand new songs like “Walk Away” and “Fresh Strawberries.” “C’mon now, Los Angeleeeez!” Frontman Alex Kapranos purred to [...]

Photos: Franz Ferdinand, Palma Violets @ Fonda Theatre, Hollywood 4/16/13

The onslaught of "Localchella" shows continued around Los Angeles as Franz Ferdinand and Palma Violets teamed up to easily sell out the Fonda Theatre. Franz Ferdinand put on their usual high energy show doling out such songs as "Michael," "The Dark of the Matinee," "Take Me Out," and "Do You Want To?" along with a handful of new songs and a bonus extended encore. Palma Violets ripped it up with a blistering set that showed shades of the Libertines and the Clash. You can catch both bands at Coachella this weekend. Check out the photos in the gallery above. [...]

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (OMD) @THE FONDA THEATRE

ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK (OMD) @THE FONDA THEATRE Photos and words by Debi Del Grande When OMD made its return two years ago after what seemed like a billion years, the shows at The Fonda and Club Nokia were, of course, sold out. This time around, the British synthpop masters are playing Coachella and made another stop to The Fonda. Not only was this gig sold out, the crowd was more intense, excited and definitely let OMD know they were very much appreciated. After all, this group has many many beloved hits and the new album English Electric has that OMD sound, [...]
