Track by Track | Fortress by Helen Hamilton, Death Rattle White Ropes A song of contrasting positive and negative emotions, White Ropes touches on the conflicts of my inner voice. The controlled, clinical verses bring lyrics of attempting to hold things together and remain calm in times of dark despair... 'Slow down, heavy heart, hold on to a fresh start'. The chorus contrasts both musically a lyrically with a defiant marching snare and unrelenting synth line both juxtaposed with lyrics of surrender [...]

Fall Mix Fall is officially here this week, and what better way to welcome the brisk autumn breeze by listening to this airy compilation of HDPP jams? There simply isn't a better way. Period. Stream the playlist below (or by clicking here ). :: Hump Day Power Play (9-19-2012) :: 01 :: "Dead End" - The Whitest Boy Alive 02 :: "Tropical Birds" - Miniature Tigers 03 :: "Foreign Room" - Telekinesis [...]

After their sophomore slump F O R T R E S S , I seriously questioned the trajectory of Miniature Tigers. Having followed them since their exploits pre- Black Magic/White Magic EP , I’ve always had a soft spot for this Brooklyn-based cohort. With early favorites likes “ Dino Damage ,” “Baby Abroad,” and “Logan’s Bread is Lemons,” I expected much from their debut full length Tell It to the Volcano , and I was joyously satisfied by their charisma and charm. But just as that allure seemed to be overshadowed by their overindulgent pseudo-tribal act in [...]

Montreal based musician and producer Miracle Fortress (Graham Van Pelt) has been making poppy electronic tunes since 2005. However, just this past year, Miracle Fortress released their long awaited sophomore album Was I The Wave? The album was created in complete isolation like Graham's first, Five Roses , and reflects that in its intricate melodies that demonstrate themes of alienation, anonymity, and the desire for the assurances of intimacy. The tracks from Five Roses have an ethereal feel tinged with a childlike sadness. Was I The Wave? as a whole, seems to have [...]

London brothers Youthfall are back to follow up their impressive "Secular Child" track from last month, offering up the vintage feeling "Guard It Like A Fortress". continue reading >>

'Guard It Like A Fortress' is the latest dreamy and transfixing lo-fi ditty from London twin-brothers Youthfall, following on from 'Secular Child' (which we heard a few weeks back ). Panda Bear-ish echoing guitar sits above synth, whilst minimalist percussion sounds click gently along to the distorted vocals - coming together seamlessly and beautifully. by Bill Pearis Forest Fire Thursday, we're in the thick of it now and maybe some of us are already frazzled. Which might explain why this picks post is shorter than yesterday's. Also, we're starting to see a lot of the same bands, so see this as a reminder as to what's happening where. This isn't comprehensive, just what I personally recommend. I've tried to include set times at the bottom of this post for all parties mentioned. [...]

Youthfall's last release Secular Child criminally passed by many major blogs after it dropped a few weeks ago, that's not to say it didn't get attention, more that it should have received a lot more. I say that with a lump in my throat, as CITR was in fact one of those blogs. We were all ashamed and didn't speak for weeks. The events that followed however gifted us a chance to redeem ourselves in the form of track premiere. CITR has never [...]
Here's the first video off Miracle Fortress' Was I the Wave.

Today's song is "Raw Spectacle" by Montreal-based musician and producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt). Van Pelt has been releasing a series of tracks monthly from a collection of unreleased material he wrote after the release of his sophomore album, Was I The Wave which was lauded by Pitchfork, Stereogum, NYLON, XLR8R and Exclaim! among others, and is available now on Secret City Records (Diamond Rings, Plants and Animals). Pelt is currently on tour and is doing a few shows this week at CMJ (see below for dates). His music is a synth pop dream. [...]

Check out this mundanely beautiful "home video" type music video for "Possession" by Montreal, Canada's musician/producer Miracle Fortress (aka Graham Van Pelt). This track showcases Van Pelt's knack for layering instrumentation to create breathtaking shoegaze, indie pop soundscapes and is the first of many "bonus singles," which were formerly unreleased and written during the time [...]
Miracle Fortress - Possession Beautiful work, all around. Hits close to home (#dadzone). Get the Was I the Wave LP, out now. timkellyfilm : Featuring some very special friends of mine. 1 + 1 = 3. Video by me. ‘Twas a pleasure to make.

"Was I the Wave" is on my list of favorites for this year and as I type this, wondering why I don't own the release on vinyl. The Tim Kelly video for "Possession" is a journey in the life of a couple that depicts their relationship from day one to life with a baby living as a family. Kelly captures the love at first sight of a single guy to a happy trio in a clever way. Check out his CMJ performances below if you find yourself in NYC this week. Miracle-Possession [mp3] [...]
