Foster the People dropped their first full length this week, and so far it's shaped up to be one of the most complete hits of the summer. The band is out of Los Angeles and has a clear surf-electronica leaning - their EP scored the hit Pumped Up Kicks, and shows Foster the People is a versatile and fun group. Here are a couple of tracks that will be in heavy rotation this Memorial Day Weekend! Houdini - Foster the People Warrant - Foster the People

For almost everyone who follows the blogosphere, that song helped define a summer, and it’s echoes are still reverberating around the music world. Torches is the debut full-length from Foster the People, a band that is starting to garner quite a bit of popularity behind the single "Pumped Up Kicks", which was on their self-titled EP, as well as several other songs featured on this album. The band's sound is a very current kind of sound, and echoes shades of bands like Phoenix, MGMT and Passion Pit, but although the band is clearly influenced and has listened to those bands, this album lacks a lot of the ingenuity and charm that made those other bands so widely adored. The album [...]

Tweet One of the perks for writing for a music blog is discovering new music and being a part of its promotion. My friends joke that I don't know the difference between mainstream and indie. When a band hits the blogs hard, I assume that they have thus become mainstream. I'm apparently wrong. According to my friends mainstream music is defined by what is played on the radio, but honestly, who listens to the radio anymore? All this to say, I thought I was way behind [...]

Foster the People "Pumped Up Kicks," the lead single on Foster the People's debut album, has organically become an alt-pop radio hit with its breezy L.A. sound and Peter Bjorn And John’s "Young Folks"-inspired whistling. I was so engrossed with the cheery melody of its chorus that it took me a few listens to discover that the lyrics suggest dark, Columbine revenge. Then again, "catchy" can mean both pleasing and deceptive. Foster the People, Pumped Up Kicks On their debut Torches [...]

With the exception of Odd Future (who I have absolutely zero time for) Foster the People are without a question the most hyped band of 2011 thus far. Their self titled EP dropped in January, and they busted into the buzz after taking SXSW by storm, following up their festival debutante moment with a sold out tour. Their 9:30 show in June also sold out pretty damn fast. Torches , their first full length album, is scheduled to drop on May 24th on Columbia/ StarTime Intl . I was familiar [...]
Funky, electronic-driven beats have been the most popular kid at the indie pop dance in recent years with the likes of Passion Pit and Hot Chip serving as current poster children. Tipping their hats to their predecessors, LA’s Foster the People are the latest young guns to bring these familiar, charged rhythms to the forefront on their anticipated debut LP, Torches. They've even primed its release with infectious lead single “Pumped Up Kicks”, a tour peppered with sold-out shows, and a Billboard climbing spree. Having just banded up in 2009, it [...]

With a powerful and impressive 10 track LP entitled “Torches” looming, then this is the honorary follow up album that MGMT should have possibly styled, produced and penned. But as they didn’t sadly, then likewise, Foster The People have swooped along, continued refining their own craft solely and have evidently patented their own original L.A. [...]

With a powerful and impressive 10 track LP entitled “Torches” looming, then this is the honorary follow up album that MGMT should have possibly styled, produced and penned. But as they didn’t sadly, then likewise, Foster The People have swooped along, continued refining their own craft solely and have evidently patented their own original L.A. sound into a full bodied ten-for-ten portait of audio-picturesque outlays and part screamy & part dreamy melodic sing-a-longs... And all with some instantaneous first plays rings that will wear out your CDJ repeat functions or annoy your internal MP3 repeat button brain patterns! [...]
