Needless to say it's another Odd Futurite who's gone on to pick up every last plaudit these past few weeks as though they were but dropped conkers come autumn, although in teaming up with Steven Ellison, or Mr. Brainfeeder , or Flying Lotus the potty-mouthed, baritonally voiced Earl Sweatshirt has put himself on the intricate mappings of the internet too. The sixth and latest release in Adult Swim's 2012 Singles Program (which already includes contributions from The Field and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, amongst others) is entitled Between Friends, and represents a [...]

While Zac Brown Band claims the No. 1 spot this week with their new album, it's the artist at No. 2 that is the real chart story. As expected, Frank Ocean 's critically-acclaimed new album "channel ORANGE" debuts at the runner-up position with 131,000 copies sold in its first week out according to Nielsen SoundScan as reported by Billboard.com. The album's final tally is higher than predicted-industry insiders expected the set to sell between 110,000 to 125,000 copies. Ocean's strong debut is made even more impressive by the fact that it was achieved with mostly iTunes sales. [...]

On the strength of sales of 234,000 copies, Zac Brown Band 's latest LP Uncaged easily bumps Chris Brown 's Fortune off the peak position on the Billboard Top 200 this week. But it's the album in the runner-up spot that has everyone talking. Frank Ocean 's debut Channel Orange moved 131,000 copies, nearly all of them digital (some record stores got their physical stock in over the weekend, Billboard [...]

This has definitely been one of the most talked about albums this year. By releasing the digital copy of his album a week early, Frank Ocean has made his way onto the Billboard 200 chart by debuting at #2. Although Target has refused to sell his album, you can pick up Channel Orange at all major retailers.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange over the past week; I’ve been listening to it quite often, and I’ve been trying to place it in some wider context. On the one hand, I think it’s admirable that Ocean’s recently professed sexuality makes the album a more interesting listen since the pronouns he uses aren’t confined to one gender or the other over the course of the album. On the other hand, it kind of irks me that something so personal was used as what seems to be a publicity stunt. (Aside 1: [...]

Today ( July 17 ), Frank Ocean 's stunning debut album Channel Orange hits record stores — but not Target — nationwide. Most of us have already lived with it for a week now, at least since the Odd Future singer began streaming it on Tumblr . If you've yet to avail yourself of the opportunity to listen to this record for free, do so immediately. Because this isn't just the best R&B album of the year so far. This is most likely the best album of the [...]

As someone who is involved both in the music blog-o-sphere and the LGBTQ community, I got about 10 texts, Facebook messages, calls etc. the morning Frank Ocean became one of the first openly queer individuals in the rap/R&B game. While this was very exciting information, in some ways it overshadowed the release of his first studio album Channel ORANGE, which technically drops today (though it had an iTunes “exclusive” release a week earlier). In the massive amount of press about which songs include references to his sexuality, the surprising support of fellow industry up-and-comers such as Tyler the Creator, [...]
Let's be Frank about "Channel Orange" (trust me, that's the least-lame pun I thought of for the teaser). Def Jam, 2012 8.6 / 10.0 The most-discussed aspects of Frank Ocean and his first “official” solo album, channel ORANGE (if one doesn’t count Nostalgia, Ultra, which was “only” a [...]

For the last week, the only thing I've been listening to (And I'm sure the same goes for you guys) is Frank Ocean's debut album, Channel Orange . And even though it was released over a month ago, " Pyramids " is still one of my favorite songs off of Orange . The fact that Frank blended two songs together to form 9:56 of aural beauty showed that he puts his artistry over the quest for radio play. He didn't format it for radio, which I thought was both different and innovative...until [...]

I wasn’t planning on writing a review for Frank Ocean at the Commodore this past Saturday. However, after a few unfavourable, (and unjust), reviews started popping up on the World Wide Web I thought this was necessary. Let me start off by saying this; who Frankie is fucking or rather not fucking should not enter the conversation of his artistic achievements. While I understand the notion of celebrity and living in the public eye, good music cannot be defined by race, sexuality, or gender. Moreover, Frank Ocean is in a genre all his own. He's given R/B a [...]

It would be hard not to notice just how orange the cover artwork for Channel Orange really is. It's intensely, artificially orange. It's practically glowing. Looking at it now, I can't help but be reminded of the Nickelodeon logo. For better or for worse, images like that one from Viacom's entertainment empire are inextricably linked to my memories of childhood. It's a pretty frightening realization, but it's undeniable. The impression made by television's constant barrage of vivid colors and exaggerated characters on my nascent imagination is something completely immeasurable, and impossible to overestimate. It strikes me [...]

From the start of “Thinkin’ Bout You” it becomes clear that Frank Ocean is going to re-establish the gooey, soulful vocal runs and stratospheric falsettos of R&B past, saving the genre from becoming rampant with infinitesimal, effects-heavy hook-providers for hip-hop. Throughout Channel Orange , Frank Ocean reclaims what it means to love hopelessly and reflects on the pitfalls of doomed relationships because he doesn’t do relationships on any terms but his own. After Ocean bravely posted a note publicly coming out online, his [...]

Frank Ocean's Debut LP is given the Slim K Slowdown Treatment due to popular demand....vibe out and enjoy... Houston's own Slim K does what he does best and takes Frank Ocean's newest album, Channel Orange , and slows it down, chops it up and spits it back out in the form of Channel Purple . This is actually pretty dope hearing songs like Golden Girl, Sweet Life and Lost in the slow motion form. Check it out below. [...]

FRANK OCEAN’s debut full-length album has just dropped and the man has everyone talking about his smooth vocals, his heart and soul dripped lyrics and the classic R&B grooves. ‘Sweet Life’ comes to us as the third single off the Channel Orange LP. The track swings mid-tempo for much of the song, and gets full with more elements picking up throughout. The track has a masterful hand of its instruments bringing together live and electronic sounds creating these blissful electro-soul grooves. The man is also [...]
Buy Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” Do NOT sleep on this album. Buy it now and thank me later. It’s undoubtedly going to be one of the best albums of 2012. Wow. Enjoy this banger.

A lot of people are debating the merits of Frank Ocean 's latest album Channel Orange at the moment. Has he really modernised the slow-jam and made it accesible for the youth of today? Or has he just got lucky and found himself the talk of the R&B / soul world by a mixture of great PR and good timing? And what about his vague 'coming out' recently? Had he finally decided it was the right time to tell the world about his sexuality or was it [...]

This is a dangerous piece. Frank Ocean has a buzz surrounding him; heck, even his buzz has a buzz. He, like a previously-reviewed female songstress (initials: LDR) has something special about him, almost like saying "there's a catch." LDR's "catch" was not really her fault, but in a sense it was: her fault was the amount of processed imagery that was surrounding her and her music. It convoluted the music, distracting a prospective listener to the point that they had to make a decision about the music before they even heard it. [...]
