With Purple Naked Ladies , The Internet stepped outside of the usual chaos of Odd Future and built a little bubble of their own. Combining elements of neo-soul, hip-hop, and electronic, the product of Syd and Matt Martian's collaboration creates its own kind of chaos, but there's a peacefulness about it that sets them apart. We paid a visit to the duo to talk about their music, coming up with Odd Future, their strategy of dropping free music, and what else is cooking within the OFWGKTA camp. By Mustafa Abubaker [...]

Frank Ocean has come a long way from singing hooks for his fellow Odd Future members to releasing one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the summer, Channel Orange. His stand-out single "Thinkin Bout You" gets an original twist with the help of Halifax producer Ryan Hemsworth . Using the opening strings of the original track, Hemsworth employs a soft laid-back melody, building drum beat and complimentary synths worthy of a video game to create this rhythmic remix. Hemsworth puts his own touch on the track without destroying its beauty and this rework will be featured on his [...]

Frank Ocean put on an incredible performance this Thursday, July 26th, at Terminal 5 in NYC. Usually, the venue itself bums me out because a lot of times sound gets swallowed, although I have had some wonderful experiences there (namely Animal Collective and A-Trak ). Despite this, though, Frank Ocean conquered all doubts. Ocean chose perhaps the classiest approach to his show; no opener, on at 9:00pm and not a minute after. His voice was, quite literally, [...]

As tender, and loveable, and loving, and momentarily harrowing if thoroughly heartfelt as Frank Ocean's TextEdit splurging of soul may be deemed (it subjectively appeared a rather damning indictment of our modern-day modus vivendi that such honest human emotion be conveyed digitally) it'd not only be lamentable were his coming out to coincide with the release of channel ORANGE the most widely reviewed outcome of this, the début but moreover deplorable on our behalf were we to fine-tooth through the ins and outs of the young man's sexuality. For if this [...]

Needless to say it's another Odd Futurite who's gone on to pick up every last plaudit these past few weeks as though they were but dropped conkers come autumn, although in teaming up with Steven Ellison, or Mr. Brainfeeder , or Flying Lotus the potty-mouthed, baritonally voiced Earl Sweatshirt has put himself on the intricate mappings of the internet too. The sixth and latest release in Adult Swim's 2012 Singles Program (which already includes contributions from The Field and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, amongst others) is entitled Between Friends, and represents a [...]

Frank Ocean recently decided to speak with UK publication The Guardian Guide where speaks on his telling tumblr post , and more about what it has been like being one of the most talked-about men in music, with "enthusiastic reviews comparing his idiosyncratic, narrative-heavy re-imagining of soul and R&B to Prince and Stevie Wonder." In the interview Ocean states, "I knew that my star was rising, and I knew that if I waited I would always have somebody that I respected be able to encourage me to wait longer, to not say it till who knows when. When [...]

Off Future's Tyler the Creator with Trash Talk As mentioned on BV Chicago earlier this week, Odd Future announced some news and a tour that happens after the previously announced The Internet and Tyler the Creator/Earl Sweatshirt shows. Odd Future will head out on the "Camp Flog Gnaw" tour in September, tagging The Paramount in Huntington, NY on 9/4 and Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT on 9/8 , along the way. [...]

I’ve been thinking a lot about Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange over the past week; I’ve been listening to it quite often, and I’ve been trying to place it in some wider context. On the one hand, I think it’s admirable that Ocean’s recently professed sexuality makes the album a more interesting listen since the pronouns he uses aren’t confined to one gender or the other over the course of the album. On the other hand, it kind of irks me that something so personal was used as what seems to be a publicity stunt. (Aside 1: [...]

As someone who is involved both in the music blog-o-sphere and the LGBTQ community, I got about 10 texts, Facebook messages, calls etc. the morning Frank Ocean became one of the first openly queer individuals in the rap/R&B game. While this was very exciting information, in some ways it overshadowed the release of his first studio album Channel ORANGE, which technically drops today (though it had an iTunes “exclusive” release a week earlier). In the massive amount of press about which songs include references to his sexuality, the surprising support of fellow industry up-and-comers such as Tyler the Creator, [...]

From the start of “Thinkin’ Bout You” it becomes clear that Frank Ocean is going to re-establish the gooey, soulful vocal runs and stratospheric falsettos of R&B past, saving the genre from becoming rampant with infinitesimal, effects-heavy hook-providers for hip-hop. Throughout Channel Orange , Frank Ocean reclaims what it means to love hopelessly and reflects on the pitfalls of doomed relationships because he doesn’t do relationships on any terms but his own. After Ocean bravely posted a note publicly coming out online, his [...]
Link: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/a lbums/16859-channel-orange/ >Frank Ocean is gay. He came out last week, and then got so much buzz and attention for being a 'hiphop artist who is openly kinda gay because he fell in love with a man' that they moved up the album release one week just to capitalize on the 'I pretended to come out because I wanted attention' buzz. It was definitely a savvy PR move, even if it takes away some one else's spotlight when they 'come out' because our society is s0o0o0 [...]

Frank Ocean's Debut LP is given the Slim K Slowdown Treatment due to popular demand....vibe out and enjoy... Houston's own Slim K does what he does best and takes Frank Ocean's newest album, Channel Orange , and slows it down, chops it up and spits it back out in the form of Channel Purple . This is actually pretty dope hearing songs like Golden Girl, Sweet Life and Lost in the slow motion form. Check it out below. [...]

FRANK OCEAN’s debut full-length album has just dropped and the man has everyone talking about his smooth vocals, his heart and soul dripped lyrics and the classic R&B grooves. ‘Sweet Life’ comes to us as the third single off the Channel Orange LP. The track swings mid-tempo for much of the song, and gets full with more elements picking up throughout. The track has a masterful hand of its instruments bringing together live and electronic sounds creating these blissful electro-soul grooves. The man is also [...]
