In 2010, I became obsessed with OFWGKTA [Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, for quick reference]. Following the release of Tyler’s Bastard at the end of 2009, a friend sent me a link and I became enamored with the world of Tyler, Earl, Hodgy, Frank Ocean and company. Tyler was one of the first artists I saw rise from underground anonymity to huge success story and subsequently provided me with my first hipster feelings of “HEY, I TOTALLY KNEW ABOUT THAT GUY BEFORE HE WAS FAMOUS”. It’s been over two years since “Yonkers” first blew up, and even [...]

Like a quiet supercollider, Frank Ocean released his new video for "Lost" with little fanfare today. There's a definite super 8-quality to the video which follows him on his travels and travails around the world in the summer of 2012 as an up-and-coming performer finally coming into his own. It was only my third gig of 2013, though Young Fathers' rice 'n' pea-powered Shacklewell Arms showing remains one of the finer evenings out of this one thus far. The off-kilt hip hop trio appeared to come of age there and then upon that most oily of stages, and an incontestable highlight came in the surprisingly refined form of a then unknown track as we now know entitled I Heard. You can hear it below, and combining the slow burn balladry en vogue at the moment having been favoured by all and sundry from Tyler, The Creator [...]
Like everything else in the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All realm 'The OF Tape Vol. 2' is misleading from the get go. Despite its sequel suggesting title and budget album cover this the Los Angeles shock-rap crew's first proper full release since they got signed. It's true that 'Channel: ORANGE' deservedly got a lot of attention [...] The post Cougar Microbes Top Albums of 2012: Odd Future - The OF Tape Vol. 2 appeared first on Cougar Microbes .
We've spent this week doing more figurative wrapping up of the year than we have literally wrapping golds, frankincenses and myrrhs, with both our Shows of 2012 and Records of 2012 features now alive and kicking, even if this year itself only has less than a couple weeks left in its legs. Here's hoping you've been able to vicariously experience evenings from the former category through us if you couldn't make them for whatever reason, though it's the latter that we're here centralising our attentions upon. As documentations of a determined time, records are the one [...]

EARL SWEATSHIRT has been flying under the radar for a bit but he’s hollered right on back with promo track ‘Chum’ off his upcoming debut EP. Earl laces a personal story of broken families and identity confusion with a melancholy drawl loading on the weight of his words. It’s a hypnotic listen with the steady lyrics rolling over scattered beats and keyboard loop. There are the deep raspy vocals and home grown fuzzy bass of early OFWGKTA tracks, as well as classic talk of spliffs, [...]

As we hit the home straight of 2012 the usual debates swirl around regarding who we might tip for success in 2013. We are fortunate enough to be asked to tip on both the BBC Sound Of 2013 poll and the blogger's equivalent poll that runs parallel to it. Both are fantastic barometers of what 2013 might have in store, with the bloggers often finding some of their artists actually breaking in 2014. The toughest issue that has our internal dialogue raging is regarding whether we should tip who we believe is going to actually make it commercially, suggesting artists [...]
Frank Ocean strays from singing on this and raps/tells us a story on Blue Whale. Frank dropped this on his Tumblr recently. Thank jah for that. This is a gem. Dig it.
Frank Ocean proves he can do a little more than just croon with his new track "Whale," which was released via his Tumblr. Singers forays into rap usually make us [...] The post Frank Ocean - "Blue Whale" appeared first on The Smoking Section .

New Frank Ocean is always a treat and last night's mysterious new "Blue Whale" is no different. This time, however, Ocean trades his falsetto and melodies for a couple of chilled-out rap verses. We've already heard him spit on "Oldie" and "She" with the rest of the Odd Future goons, but "Blue Whale" (which seems to be an old demo produced by Midi Mafia ) is the most continuous and solid rap effort so far from the Def Jam singer. Check out the [...]

Frank Ocean's channel ORANGE was, within the context of a rap record, nigh on flawless. If one were to vaingloriously pick up on one niggling qualm with it, however, it'd surely be that there perhaps wasn't enough actual rap on there from the honeycomb-throated crooner. Ocean last night dropped the 'tropical vibes' of this one via his Tumblr – the very same site from which he issued that TextEdit statement – and it signals a return to the spit. Yet where his closest contemporaries may centralise their [...]
Frank Ocean 's stellar debut album, Channel ORANGE , elevated him to the top echelon of artists in the eyes of many music fans. On his first release since the album, Ocean shows off his versatility delivering his unique brand of songwriting in rap form. He has already demonstrated his abilities as an emcee on tracks like Tyler, the Creator 's "She" and on "Blue Whale" he perfectly compliments a smooth instrumental, which carries a sound consistent with his work as of late. There are few better ways to kick off your week than some new Frankie O. Enjoy it [...]

Frank Ocean no longer needs a lengthy introduction. The Odd Future affiliate has quickly become something of a veteran, and just now, he shared a new joint via his Tumblr , which, according to MissInfo.tv , is titled "Blue Whale." Ocean changes it up a bit on this one, rapping as opposed to singing. Give the track a listen below. ( Pitchfork )

After the release of Frank's huge success that is Channel Orange , the Odd Future crooner now releases the highly anticipated video for his track "Pyramids". Directed by Nabil, the visuals tell a story that is gorgeous and abstract at the same time. Beginning with a large dose of Absinth, Frank Ocean works his ways through the night, ending in a desert with John Mayer grinding out chords on his guitar. The "Pyramids" video is put together with the same care and attention to detail as Channel Orange , and deserves a view below.
If you were under the assumption Frank Ocean was going to leave Channel Orange with no visual aids to go by, just know you're not alone. This guy here did [...] The post Frank Ocean Releases "Pyramids" Video, Performs On "Saturday Night Live" appeared first on The Smoking Section .
too weird to live, too rare to die I love Frank but besides "Lost" I just cant get into the newer jams. A lot of underproduced half ideas. He singing or talking? & what about? [ Quickies are mini-reviews that can fit into a 140 character tweet. They are of albums that people already know of but perhaps are curious about our take on it. What did you think of the disc?]
