SISTERS CocoRosie are harder to pin down than a greased hog on new LP Tales Of A Grass Widow. The globetrotting American siblings have a real European influence to their work - not least in their vocal stylings which sound like a mutant cross between Sinead O'Connor and Bjork, both distinctive and compelling. And their music, well, it's like a bastard cross between freak folk and brooding urban - like the soundtrack to a robot lost in a forest, or a wandering goblin in a metropolis. You get the idea, it's odd. But still it's oddly [...]

The new album came without a big bang, but that didn't stop Devendra Banhart from delivering some of his best work as of yet. The freak folk crooner is still at it was amazing tunes. However, right now the one that stands out the most from Mala is "Mi Negrita" an acoustic ditty with a Spanish tilt. It's a short song with a lot of punch. His vocals simper between lullaby mode and heartbreak warbling. It's just a well-rounded low-tempo track. Also, it needs a video. Click below to listen to it. [...]

Walter Sickert & The ARmy of BRoken TOys are the spinners of a charming, demented fairy tale that gathers new characters all the time. At the heart of the colorful fantasy is Walter Sickert, the writer, ringleader and conjurer. The name of the band came to Walter in a dream. He had been living in a haunted barn in the woods of New Hampshire and would often record very late at night. During one of these sessions on a mid-winter’s eve, he fell asleep curled under a pile of broken porcelain dolls. The dolls kept him warm [...]

Their once definitive freak folk label is almost a thing of the past on CocoRosie's latest track, the prog-poppy "Gravediggress." The sisters have been maneuvering in and out of a more electronic sound for a while now, and "Gravediggress" manages to subtly reference their weird American roots without totally abandoning its popier texture. "Gravediggress" combines eastern-tinged, theatrical sounding melodies with the sisters' regular "sing like a baby" cooing vocals. A nice return to form for CocoRosie, "Gravediggress" should also serve as a rather accessible introduction to anyone unfamiliar with the group.

Sister duo CocoRosie are always consistent in giving us spooky freak-folk that warms out soul. New single “Gravediggress” (complete with a 90’s horror-rap style cover above) does exactly that supplying us some experimental sounds that are too good to be true. As we enjoy another song from them, our complete fear of these ladies remain. Their new record Tales of a Grass Window will be out May 27th on City Slang.

The new year starts with some weird folk by Moongazing Hare from Denmark. In fact, David Folkman Drost managed to make a transition between mysterious ambient work, Northern freak-folk and Americana. I wish there were more songs like The Sunderland Wife and King Neutral's Rant, because it seems like he's hiding a bit behind the sound collages. King Neutral's Rant is a modified version of the American folk song "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground". David added new lyrics and i [ This [...]

Tim Cohen of The Fresh & Onlys and John Berson of Exray’s first collaborated to create 2009’s I’m This Tall City. The San Francisco duo’s debut as Window Twins was intimate and refreshing, and also made a strong case that their so-called “side project” had more than enough cause to take center stage. Wish only strengthens the possibility that Window Twins could be a proper, full-fledged band. Even just after a listen of quirky opener “Two Left Feet,” the possibilities are endless. “Two Left Feet” is a snuggly, intimate folk tale about [...]
