Chicago's Republic of Lights offer their debut, "Go Rococo", for your listening pleasure. It's not all that new, but it was "new " to us, it's free and we like it. The band walks a tight line between edgie indie rock and upbeat pop. The tracks "Go Rococo", "Got You Surrounded", and "22 Cent Stamp" recall Spoon, while "Lotus" and "Strange Climate" favor dance rock. Keep up with Republic of Lights on Facebook and catch them live in Chicago. Check out: " Got [...]

We Can't Enjoy Ourselves don't produce the typical New York jangle pop – their brand is saucy & reckless, like a combination of The Smiths and Pavement (whose song 'We Dance' perhaps their name references). Their bio states: " There once was a band in New York called We Can't Enjoy Ourselves . They were young, energetic, and happy; one day they abandoned their matronly motown shuffle for the sake of a younger genre; they loved, but they were not loved. Their lives ended in disaster. " The 7-song EP One [...]
Get ready to shake your ass at the Key Club with tickets to see Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave.

Dwelling at the intersection of low fidelity pop and burned-out pyschedlia we find Englishman Luke Donovan's Spectral Park . Seemingly inspired by the acid doo wop of the Mothers of Invention , the organ of Rick Wright ( Pink Floyd ), and the madcap of Syd Barrett, Spectral Park channels a weirdo art-pop groove that is absolutely sublime. The lead track 'L'Appel du Vide' – literally the "call of the void" – buffets between obtuse, jangled guitar chords, phasing electronic noise arpeggios , and sci-fi organ runs, propelled by copious snare drum and topped with reverb-soaked [...]

In re-imagining Steely Dan 's 1977 classic album Aja , Toronto art rockers The Darcys breathe new life into songs I've heard perhaps 500 times. The Darcys render these songs not grooveless, but grounded in a mostly minimalist, modern electronic landscape. They typically maintain vocal melodies but update the music by removing the pristine jazz-influenced approach of the original work and replacing it with bleak and angular electronics, regimented guitar, and metronomic percussion. That's not to say the vocals sound similar to the original, though; voices are frail and subdued, standing in stark contrast [...]

Cloud Nothings – No Future/No Past [mp3] Cloud Nothings – Stay Useless [mp3] Cloud Nothings – No Sentiment [mp3] (each track from Attack on Memory , out now on Carpark Records ) Dylan Baldi continues to make melodic pop-punk, but embraces the sound and urgency of hardcore & emo ( [...]

As the first track on And Now We Are Talking , 'Going Steady' establishes itself with a thin melody built on a chorus of echoing monotonous utterances; introduce a banging drum loop, punchy bass, & dreary gothic vocals of Ryan Hizer and you have the lazy/hazy electronic experiments of Good Sport . 'Bad Harmonies' features a moaning mellotron with waves of modulating static; 'Dudes' has a Matthew Dear feel, and 'Pushover' has the inspirational vibe of a John Hughes 80s teenybopper movie theme song. The excellent 5-song EP And Now We Are Talking is [...]

Given that I had him along to play at my last Aye Tunes gig in 2011 you shouldn't really need to be told that I rather like Shambles Miller. If you haven't heard the man himself yet to find out why I like him you won't get many better chances than this. You see, Shambles has now sold out of physical copies of both his EPs, Shambles Vs The Dragonwizard and Shambles Sails The Clockwork Sea. To celebrate the sell out status the kind Mr Miller is making both EPs available, for a limited time, to download [...]

Paul Coltofeanu (aka Free Swim ), the man who imagined life with an extra set of hands and the escapades of the first Panda to climb Everest, is back with Dennis . The story is more conventional this time. Two buds are alienated by the presence of a woman, a new girlfriend to be precise. They're having a blast playing tennis, drinking wine, pub crawling, hanging out, and then... Dennis finds love. Dennis has a Kinks meets The Knack feel to it with the sensibility [...]
