As we do every third Tuesday, Gimme Noise returns with yet another mixtape of the local rap music that's making the rounds lately. Consider it our holiday gift. You can stream the mixtape below or dow
Santa Barbara's Gardens & Villa may have a name that is challenging to google without finding images of landscapes and homes you can't afford, but they also have a sound that perfectly encapsulates California. On their self-titled debut the band present tight pop tunes that also take the time to stretch out on the beach for awhile. The album was recorded in Oregon by the talented in his own right Richard Swift, and the ten classic tracks were released by Secretly Canadian on July 5th. Gardens & Villa is Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, [...]

Clams Casino is not only a seafood dish but it is also the alias of producer Mike Volpe. He is releasing his debut, the Rainforest EP next week, but this week he released the video for his track "Natural". Jennifer Tiexiera directed the video and it is a collection of found footage including scenes from Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God . You can stream the entire ep below. At the age of 21 Santa Rosa's Ryan Thomas Schmale (aka That Ghost ) has already released five albums. His fifth album, Songs Out Here , was recently released by twosyllable records . Schmale's music is clearly influenced by sights and sound of Northern California, and the result is a sound that is wash out, dreamy, and a perfect summer listen. Portions of Songs Out Here were written on the grounds of acclaimed author Jack London's estate in Sonoma County. [...]
The London duo Labyrinth Ear has been burning up the web since forming last year. Emily Jacobs and Tom Evans released their free debut ep Oak late in 2010 and now they are making noise again. They recently released a new remix of Arthur Russell's "This Is How We Walk on the Moon", and now they have released a video for the track. The band also released a moon-themed mixtape to go with the release of "Walk on the Moon". You can download it here . Kraftwerk - Spacelab (intro) [...]
Jasper Patterson (aka Groundislva ) is a young producer from Venice, CA, and last month he released his self-titled debut album on Friends of Friends. The album is a modern take on house, techno, and electronic music, but above all else utilizes 8-bit grooves. Jasper's father, Michael Patterson, both animated and directed the classic "Take On Me" video by A-Ha, and now he has directed his son's new video for his track "A Grass Day". S/T LP + 7" Out 4/12 ( Friends of Friends ) [...]
Yellowbirds is the dreamy new project from Sam Cohen, formerly of Apollo Sunshine. He is Brooklyn based and back in February he released an album called The Color on Royal Potato Family. His music is beautiful and interesting, but what I am enjoying the most is the way he is going about making videos. Above is the video for his track "The Rest of My Life" and it is comprised entirely of found pictures set to stop motion. His latest video is for the track "The Reason" and he worked [...]

It only seems fitting for Mark Bianchi's last album as Her Space Holiday to be a self-titled release. A project that began 15 years ago and has generated such a high-quality of work is ending, but on August 16th we will get one more album. When you take in Mark's recordings as a whole, all 8 albums and 5 eps, you get an ever changing and complex sounds. Mark has tried to encompass the expanse of that sound on this record. My favorite album from Her Space Holiday is his 2003's release The Young Machines [...]

Mexicans With Guns "Ceremony" (Innovative Leisure/Friends of Friends) I am not going to say that the moniker that San Antonio's Ernest Gonzales has chosen for himself is not a little unsettling, but when you dive into the debut album, Ceremony , from Mexicans With Guns you lose all concern. With Gonzales is performing and recording as MWG he becomes a whole new musician. This music is more aggressive, danceable, and filled with a raw and pulsing energy that will get you moving. As the title may suggest this tracks have a [...]

The Cleveland band Herzog really caught me by surprised. I sometimes believe the lower your expectations the bigger reward, but I also think this band would impress no matter what. I am beginning see a resurgence of the early '90's indie rock sound, and in several moments on the band's new album Search , Herzog bring the '90's glory. A perfect example of this is the fierce track "Paul Blart & The Death of Art ( mp3 ) with its fuzzed out guitars, and catchy lyrics. However, there are several different styles represented [...]
I've been enjoying this new '90's-era r&b revival that has been springing up across the country lately. It has manifested itself in the sounds of James Blake, Jamie Woon, and so many others. For me one of the brightest spots has been the sounds of Grimes . Based in Montreal, Grimes is primarily the work of Claire Boucher. She released her debut album, Halfaxa , back in March through Lo Recordings, and is about to release a new split ep called Dark Bloom with d'Eon. Halfaxa [...]
"I'll bury my downcast hours in transparent ink, tie myself to the mast and wait here for the ship to sink." - from "Poetry" I recently heard someone ask the question, "What album do you put on to enjoy the peaceful beginning of a Sunday Morning?". What is the soundtrack of your first cup of coffee and early morning writing or shuffling around? For me, over the last two months, it has been the Norwegian songwriter Pål Moddi Knutsen . He records under the name Moddi, and on April 19th he is releasing his debut album [...]

"Why can't music always be this pure?" Jared Mees and The Grown Children are preparing to release a new album called Only Good Thoughts Can Stay through Tender Loving Empire on May 10th. This album is perfect and just as positive and uplifting as the title implies in sound, but at times the subject matter drifts into darker areas. It exposes a natural balance or conflict or give and take between a positive outlook and the inherent struggles of life. Musically, the album is filled [...]

Bibio is Stephen Wilkinson, and the moniker of one of my favorite British producer's and musicians. On March 29th Warp Records will be releasing his latest album Mind Bokeh . This is Bibio's five studio album and pushes even further into the realm of electronic music. I would most closely compare what Bibio does to what Matthew Adam Hart and The Russian Futurists are doing, but with much more electronic elements. You can download a sampler from the album over at Warp . [...]

American Laundromat Records is currently working on a new Smiths tribute project. They are still enlisting bands, but they are already have a solid line-up and tracklisting. The CD is slotted for Autumn 2011 worldwide release. I am especially excited about hearing Elk City , The Wedding Present , and Greg Laswell . Confirmed Artists (in alphabetical order) / Track Covering Cinerama / London Class Actress / Ask Dala / Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Doug Martsch (Built To Spill) / Reel Around [...]
New Orleans' Empress Hotel will be releasing their self-titled debut EP March 8th on Park The Van Records. The above video for their song "Mach Bach," the second track off their EP. It took 1,500 balloons, mostly filled by director Andrew Stubbs, to create this mini film. The band plays a fun and interesting brand of pop with interesting lyrics, smooth vocal melodies and layered harmonies. Singer/songwriter Micah McKee is a strong frontman for this band lead by brothers Ryan and Eric Rogers. Listen to : "Bells Ring" ( mp3 [...]
Chicago's Brian Griffith is a man of many names and of many sounds. The video above shows him creating live beats with Natalie Chami, and when they perform together they go by the name l'éternèbre . I love to watch them create, but my favorite project of Brian's is his solo creations as Grey Ghost . His melodies and beats are beautiful and peaceful. He just released a new tape called Songs To Wake Up To on the local label Plustapes. The tape features 6 tracks (three on each [...]
The duo of Molly Shea and Jason Klauber aka Acrylics will be releasing their debut full-length, Lives and Treasure on March 1st through Friendly Fire Recordings/Hot Sand Records. There something smooth and simple in Molly's vocals, but it is the dark undertones that drew me in. The above video for "Nightwatch" was a collaboration with House Plants, and was filmed on location at The Wassaic Project - an upstate NY oasis of spooky ancient buildings, ominous rivers, and eerie landscapes that set the tone perfectly for the single. Lives and [...]
Portland's Hosannas have been my soundtrack for the last few days. There is something in their driving lo-fi melodies and rhythms that make it easier to do the things I need to do. They keep me moving. The video above for their track "When We Were Young" was directed by Guy Wagner, and it makes me think of Easter and Spring and all that is just around the corner. The track is taken for the duo's album Together . Hosannas is comprised of brothers Richard and Brandon Laws. They have [...]
Milwaukee born and New York based Signif is smooth and composed. Her debut fill-length album, The Transitio n is filled with soulful samples and beats creating a perfect backdrop for passionate delivery. If you've lost your faith in the "real hip hop" or if you were never really a fan you should give Signif a shot. Sit back, relax, and let her win you over. My favorite tracks are "Afternoon Jazz", "The Transition", and "The Wake Up". The Transition was released on Jan. 12th and [...]
