Blackout Beach is Frog Eyes frontman Carey Mercer's solo project, and its third album, Fuck Death, shares many characteristics with the work of his full band. There are the requisite unintelligible lyrics and obscure cultural references, nods to Agamemnon and "Chinese soldier poems." There is the deliberate and sometimes frustrating obliqueness. The songs are [...]

This here's a mix I made about this time last year, a ballet about a man lost on foot in a mountain forest during a severe blizzard. Don't worry, the narrative's totally legible. Stay cold: Black Sky Black Snow by ForestGospel Black Sky Black Snow from Mediafire

I've never been totally won over by Carey Mercer. I'm not a big fan of Frog Eyes , and his songs were my third least favourite part about Swan Lake (behind the band name and the production style on Beast Moans ). His latest album as Blackout Beach intrigues me, however. First off, it's got an amazing title: Fuck Death . And then there's the single, "Beautiful Burning Desire," which has some appealingly weird-ass atmospheric synths. It's a good track, although I've got to admit that my favourite parts are [...]

Yay for wild Canadians. It seems that Frog Eyes's Carey Mercer aims to be some kind of bookish take on Nick Cave's '80s danger, and I think that despite the think-lipped manners, he is in many ways equally unhinged. But it's the fantastical theatricality that makes him unique. Breathlessness, piano pounding, and shaky drums...all things that get my head a'bobbing. Frog Eyes - The Oscillator's Hum
Blackout Beach is the unsettling solo side project of Frog Eyes / Swan Lake member Carey Mercer; you might remember the two tracks we posted from his last Blackout Beach album, 20082s Skin Of Evil . Mercer's got another Blackout Beach album coming out soon, and he's named it Fuck Death after a Leon Golub painting. In a press release, Mercer claims that the album is his "attempt to make something about Beauty and War." He recorded the album himself, using three synths, two drum-machines, and a guitar amp, [...]

One thing we know for sure, Spencer Krug hates down time. Since his debut release in 2002 with Frog Eyes, Krug has released 15 full length albums and 5 EP's under 6 different monikers ( Fifths of Seven , Sunset Rubdown , Frog Eyes , Moonface , Swan Lake , and Wolf Parade ). His latest album will come from his Moonface side. Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped does actually have a story behind the title. While throwing back a few beers and waiting for the Mogwai show to start, I had the pleasure of meeting the master blogger of this wonderful music web page [Editor's note: That's me]. It came up in conversation that I should write a post (although I'm not clear on if it was offered, or I just sort of invited myself), so I set about finding something worthwhile to share. Back in 2006, Dan Bejar of Destroyer, Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, and Spencer Krug of Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade came together and formed the band <a target="_blank" [...]

"Sensitive Girls" is the new video from Frog Eyes . Immediately, anything animated immediately appeals to us, even with this, slightly darker feeling animated video. Check out the hand-drawn video above. Yes, each and every frame was apparently drawn by hand--just under one thousand pictures!

Check this new, animated video for Frog Eyes' "The Sensitive Girls" (from their 'Paul's Tomb: A Triumph' record). It was made by London-based, Russian artist Marsha Balaeva. For Balaeva, "what attracted [her] most was the theme of urban gloom and despair, where everything you look at is palpably wrong and menacing, yet fascinating in some way." Wow deep stuff - but somehow she pulls it off.
Frog Eyes - "The Sensitive Girls" from stereogum on Vimeo . Frog Eyes' new video for "The Sensitive Girls" was helmed by Russian artist Marsha Balaeva, who created the clip using over 1,000 hand-drawn ink and pencil drawings. The video is nearly entirely Balaeva's vision, but she started off with a general outline from Frog Eyes frontman Carey Mercer. It's a beautiful video, jam packed with religious symbols and gritty urban scenes. Paul's Tomb: A Triumph is available now. [...]
The video for Frog Eyes' "The Sensitive Girls" - a song from one of 2010's most overlooked albums Paul's Tomb: A Triumph - was directed by the London-based Russian artist Marsha Balaeva . She used just under 1,000 hand-drawn ink and pencil drawings to create the clip, the first project she's done in color. Carey Mercer loosely outlined his thoughts on the song (and came up with the clip's closing sequence). Otherwise, it was Balaeva's vision. She had this to say about it: Read More...
