Echotape , a band that came together under a shared disillusionment that the vast majority of artists that presented themselves as "alternative" were, in fact, devoid of any discernible purpose or ambition beyond commercial or egotistic self-nourishment, have a four track EP scheduled for release later this year. Their first released track is called "Came Into My Blood" and it combines dream-like melodies, an upbeat rhythm similar to the Horrors , and passionate vocals. For their debut album, they have worked with legendary producer Youth (of Killing [...]

MM and I went to see a film this week with a friend of ours, Gooner Ian. We were the only three in the cinema until the last minute when a couple gate-crashed the party. (Didn't they realise?! We didn't!) Anyway, no-one could deny the commanding central performance or even a highly credible supporting cast, but it just wasn't what it promised to be. It lacked depth (in this case political) and was without the cultural reference points that spark a whole raft of memories. Sadly, it just sort of faded away from consciousness. It's a metaphor that [...]

Sometimes I get spoiled by living in Los Angeles. Whether it's walking down the street and bumping into a celebrity or knowing about a "hot" band before they make it seems completely normal. Sure the latter part of that statement will probably ostracize me from some of my readers, but it's true. Although it seems pretentious and snobbish, it feels weird constantly saying, "I have been listening to this band for X amount of years before anyone knew who they were." After a while you become accustomed to this feeling and jaded since a lot of breakthrough bands [...]

A little while back I brought you news of MiniBoone , a group with history in art-rock, using repetitive verses and frenetic imagery to win over fans. This newest single is very similar, at least in the beginning of the tune, sort of like old school Futureheads . But, as the song progresses it's reigned in a bit, organized into a fairly traditional pop spin. You'll definitely find yourself lost in this track, especially as the vocals begin to warm a bit. You can find this track and several others [...]
Αχ!
The Eversons are highlights in the fusion of past and present that is art-punk, a genre most recently propelled by names like Art Brut and The Rakes. Both groups debuted in 2005 with a thickly accented, spontaneously wry vocal wit backed by tremolo-heavy riffs and mechanical rhythms in a style akin to bands like Gang [...]

by Paul Brown We've all probably seen the distressing scenes of the droughts in East Africa recently, and it's difficult to shake an over-riding feeling of helplessness. Recently, though, a collection of musicians in the North East of England have come together in an effort to provide some kind of help to those affected, by providing a series of exclusive songs to a stunning new compilation called North East by East Africa. [...]

Edwin van Cleef is a nu disco producer / DJ from Leeds. He hasn't really released much in the past couple of years, though what he does is pure quality. Check out his remix for The Futureheads , absolutely spectacular. He has just released a new EP Never Be Alone At Night. The title track features the perfect cocktail for a dancefloor ready nu-disco track; a driving bass line, tons of synths and vocals from Tom Gavin of Gemini Club . oh yeah. Download: Never Be Alone At Night (feat. Gemini Club) - Edwin van Cleef [...]
The fourth Split Festival returns to the Ashbrooke Sports Club in Sunderland on 17th and 18th September. The two-day festival, curated by Sunderland's own Futureheads , boasts a fine slice of local talent, whilst offering enough international acts to keep even the most jaded festival-goer awake. At the time of writing, tickets are still available at the bargain price of £35 for the full weekend. For any enthusiast of the vibrant Northeast scene, or fans of its melodic, harmonised sound, the goodies on offer [...]
Hyde & Beast offer a pocket full of laid back songs from their debut album 'Slow Down'; a solid group of gentle psychedelic blues pop tracks

By Paul Brown For a few months now, I've been excitedly looking forward to Slow Down , the debut album from Hyde and Beast , the North East super-group of sorts, comprised of Futureheads drummer Dave Hyde and former Golden Virgins member Neil Bassett. The record came out on August 15th, and as Dave tells us, has been a long time in the making: "We've known each other for twelve years or something, and we've been pretty good friends for a while, but a few years ago I was really busy with the Futureheads [...]

Fortunately, the weather once again holds out on Sunday as thousands of music fans flood into the centre of Sheffield for the last day of Tramlines 2011. By early afternoon, venue capacities become how many people will fit and still be able to get to the bar and the main stage has a steady moving queue. For this reason, I return to the New Music Stage, which today is curated by local screamo/hardcore group Rolo Tomassi. The band have great taste, as the first band I see are [...]
Hyde and Beast , a duo of The Futureheads' Dave Hyde and ex-Golden Virgins' drummer Neil Bassett have unveiled the video for their first single 'Never Come Back'. 'Never Come Back' is a very retro '60s/'70s inspired sound which is fleshed out with a sweet psychedelic edge. It will precede the release of their debut album Slow Down , released on August 12th via their own label, Tail Feather Records.

OK, so I know that i did pretty much this exact post about a month or so ago, but things at this end have been hectic as i'm currently goign through the process of buying and selling my house. It's chaos... and all-consuming chaos at that. However, just because I have not been posting things round these parts does not mean that I have been totally cut off from the music world. Oh no. Indeed, here's a quick round up of some of the stuff I've been listening to over the last [...]

It's not too often that a local band catches my eye enough to blog about, but on this occasion I've been moved to write something. Mixing sensational funk-infused soul pop melodies with unique and vibrant vocal tones, Solko are an interesting blend of all the good new things popping up in today's UK music scene. While their escapades have been limited to Norfolk and Suffolk so far, it seems likely Solko will be gracing stages in other counties soon enough. Their recent appearance at Norfolk's Playfest alongside Frank Turner and The [...]
Ed Sheeran, The Futureheads, Scratch Perverts, and cheap text tickets all make up Cheshire's finest musical showcase – Cloud 9 Festival (August 6th)Summer is just around the corner, with preparations already underway in fields across the nation. And far from the glare of endurance testing four-day mud-binges, a rural locale set in breathtaking countryside readies itself to host one non-stop party

Everything Everything are a band that's known to be something of an acquired taste, but our palate devoured them as if they'd been prepared by a Michelin -starred chef. Some dismissed their sound as over-complicated or too random, but we bloody loved it, finding them incredibly inventive and original, whilst still providing hooks and singles in abundance. Well, Mammal Club are being touted as a more palatable Everything Everything, so we're poised and salivating all over our keyboard. We'd heard Mammal Club's debut EP, AU , upon it's release on the Everybodys Stalking [...]
The Futureheads' drummer, Dave Hyde, has started a new project under the name Hyde & Beast. The the other half of the duo is ex-Golden Virgins' drummer Neil Bassett - but fear not this is no drum-indulgence affair - Hyde plays guitar here. Having started their own label, Tail feather Records, the pair wrote some songs and got Futureheads' front man Barry Hyde (as in Dave's brother) and Field Music's David Brewis to get involved in a few live dates. They have now made a nice video for a nice song they wrote, it's here: [...]

Lovely Hearts Club Presents: Tall Ships - Plate Tectonics The incredible talent of the UK band Tall Ships is something of an open secret among indie-philes this side of the pond. We at The Lovely Hearts Club have been fans since we were first heard their hypnotic, self-titled debut EP last year. Then we featured their label-mates Dad Rocks! earlier this year and were reminded of how much we've dug all of the bands we've heard on British label [...]
