FYF Fest: Expanding to two days in 2012?

FYF Fest: Expanding to two days in 2012? If we are to believe the FYF Fest's Facebook page , the downtown L.A. festival — which rallied from consecutive problem-plagued years to stage a virtual mini-Coachella last September — will be a two-day affair in 2012. The page's latest status says: " FYF Fest . Sept. 1st & 2nd. Tell us 5 bands that you'd like to see at the festival. Be creative." Come to think of it, I have some ideas.

Arctic Monkeys return to Raleigh with Smith Westerns

English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys returned to Raleigh tonight, Oct. 12, and performed at Disco Rodeo . The band visited the venue April 2010, but this year brought along Smith Westerns to open. Chicago-based Smith Westerns released their sophomore album earlier this year. Since then, they have played with TV on the Radio , Cults and Yeasayer , in addition to international festivals including Austin City Limits Music Festival , Fyf Fest , Leeds Festival , Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo . [...]

Festival Review: CoS at FYF 2011

Festival Review: CoS at FYF 2011 At the start of Beetlejuice , Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis's characters both express gratitude for the fact they are on vacation. Only seconds later do they tackle the topic that they are spending their vacation in the confines of their own home. This hardly seems like a vacation. Part of the reason we as a society go on vacation, and go to festivals for that matter, is the illusion that we are escaping reality. Festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, Sasquatch, and even stuff like Moe Down and Outside Lands do a great job of making you forget where you [...]

FYF Fest 2011 Review

Four Tet FYF Fest lived up to its promise this year, with wide range of artists performing, from Death from Above 1979 to Glass Candy this past Saturday at LA State Park. In comparison to bigger and more mainstream festivals, FYF stands out from the rest. It's much smaller and, thus, more intimate, as well as an [...]

FYF Fest 2011 In Photos

FYF Fest, which has had issues with security and crowds in previous years, seems to have moved past those problems and evolved into a healthier, happier festival. Standout sets included Girls, who played heavily from their upcoming Father, Son, Holy Ghost , buzzbuilders Purity Ring and steady, show-those-tikes-how-it's-done vets like Guided By Voices and the Descendents. Jasper Bernbaum took his camera to downtown LA's State Historic Park on Saturday to document for you.

FYF FEST, State Historic Park, Los Angeles, CA. - 9.3.2011

FYF FEST, State Historic Park, Los Angeles, CA. - 9.3.2011 This year's FYF Fest was a complete turnaround from 2010's logistical nightmare and overall chaos, I mean just look at the smile on that bro's face in the pic above. 2011 felt more like an outdoor All Tomorrow's Parties experience and less like a trip to the DMV. Fewer lines, zero hassles and the unbeatable lineup made it something I'll be looking forward to more than any other local event in the years to come. I shot live pics for the first time (in a festival setting) since Coachella in 2008, which was a [...]

Photos & Review: FYF Fest 2011

Photos & Review: FYF Fest 2011 FYF Fest promised us "the best day of summer" and they came through with their word. This years festival was a complete highlight and was pulled off without the issues that many had to deal with in the previous year. Their team up with Goldenvoice was a very smart move and won back plenty of fans. I really didn't hear any complaints from festival goers while I was there or afterwards online. Entrance through security was quick, food and beverage lines were short and there was plenty of access to [...]

LIVE REVIEW: FYF Fest 2011 – A Report Card

School's in full swing & FYF Fest is behind us which means it's time for a report card. Which bands earned A's or F's and how did FYF Fest perform overall?

Live: FYF Fest 2011

Tonight in L.A.: FYF Fest, the Soft Pack, Psychic Friend, Death to Anders, Playground Festival

Tonight in L.A.: FYF Fest, the Soft Pack, Psychic Friend, Death to Anders, Playground Festival A festival and other festivities: ► Hard to believe there's a better bargain than this year's FYF Fest (especially if you bought your tickets at the screamin'-cheap presale rate). If the involvement this year of über-promoter Goldenvoice eliminates or even alleviates the embarrassing logistical problems of the past two years, FYF 2011 could be a landmark day. It's highlighted by Guided by Voices , Explosions in the Sky , Descendents , Broken Social Scene , Death From Above 1979 and Cold War Kids , any one of [...]

FYF Fest 2011 Preview

FYF Fest returns to the notorious Los Angeles State Park this year! With help from Goldenvoice, FYF Fest promises to be the biggest and smoothest running fest that FYF has put on. Must see acts include Descendents and Death From Above 1979, both acts happen to making their first LA appearances since breaking up in 2004 [...]

FYF Fest: The Rawkblog Guide

FYF Fest: The Rawkblog Guide Broken Social Scene at Coachella 2011 / photo by David Greenwald Assuming Goldenvoice works its logistical magic, Saturday's FYF Fest could be the best non-SXSW music festival of the year. Below you'll find my planned itinerary; if you skip Olivia Tremor Control or Guided by Voices, it's time to consider your life choices. Look at this fucking lineup: 12:30 p.m. Twin Sister - Raphael's Stage 1:25 p.m. Avi Buffalo - Raphael's Stage (toss-up: 1:35 p.m. Mr. Heavenly - Leonardo's Stage) 2:50 [...]

FYFxLOMO: A look at DIY in L.A.

FYF×LOMO - Trailer
Just in time for this year's FYF festivities: FYF Fest and Analog V. Digital , a collaboration between former L.A. photographer Benjamin Hoste and Lomography , has come together for a nice recap of the local music scene through particular lenses used last year. Featuring photography and perspectives from musicians and fans — in addition to some nice essays from bloggers Justin Gage , Ben McShane , Joe Fielder — FYFxLOMO 's final product is a testament to the community's DIY scene in L.A. The site displaying the final [...]

More FYF Fest Post & Pre-Parties

FYF Fest will be pulling off some major shows this weekend other than their yearly festival which will be taking place at L.A. Historic Park on Saturday, September 3rd. We recently mentioned that Glass Candy and Chromatics will play a pre-party at Los Globos on Friday, September 2nd and also that Death From Above 1979 will headline a show at The Music box on Sunday, September 4th. But those aren't the only shows FYF have up their sleeves. Touche Amore , Dangers , Joyce Manor and [...]

Video: Fool's Gold, 'Wild Window'

Fool's Gold - Wild Window [2011]
Fool's Gold's sophomore album "Leave No Trace" arrived earlier this month like an umbrella drink, mixing sweet and bright African beats with the intoxicating yearning of '80s mopes like the Smiths and the Cure. Singer Luke Top's full-throated entreaties, sung entirely in English this time (he did some songs in Hebrew on the debut), exude optimism over the complex rhythms and Lewis Pesacov's pointillist guitar work. Andrew Gura's colorful video for "Wild Window" captures the joy too; if this how this era's peaceniks look and sound, then raise those two fingers to the sky. ||| [...]
