One of the first concerts I ever went to was at Mellon Arena out in Pittsburgh which featured Disturbed and Godsmack with Stone Temple Pilots headlining. Obvious Nirvana references aside - and believe me, there have been many - Baltimore's Roomrunner make music that's pretty original; nobody's really doing the aggressive, fuzz-laden garage-grunge thing at the moment- at least, not in quite the same way. "Bait Car" is the opening track of the band's forthcoming debut, Ideal Cities, out May 25. Nostalgic for the 90s? I've been picking up a lot of great psych stuff lately on the UNI Label, a subsidiary of Universal and MCA which released a ton of great psychedelic albums between 1967 and 1972. Released in 1969, "Volume 13 was the first and only full length album put out out by The Yellow Payges from Los Angeles during their 5 year run from 1966 to 1970, however the group did release quite a few singles . All of Hollowtown , the debut release from Lawrence's Pale Hearts , sounds prettily depressing. This is a good thing, in that it's the rare release these days that manages to convey longing, want, need, or sadness without screaming and yelling. Pale Hearts express their emotions through plaintive songs which still manage to jangle and swing. It's spaghetti western via new wave - not unlike Wall of Voodoo covering Ennio Morricone . This new Infiniiti commercial for their JX model entitled "Unravel" keeps popping up on the television, and every single time it does I find myself humming along to the song in the background without realizing that I don't even know who sang that catchy tune. After a little research it turns out the track is by The Airplanes and is called "A Summer Daydream Part 1". And even more so, the tune is ten times better than the little snippet from the commercial would ever lead you to believe. Four Thee Mighty Caesars reissues are due out soon from UK label Damaged Goods . Thee Mighty Caesars were led by the mighty Billy Childish , and also included John Agnew on bass and Graham Day on drums. The beauty behind The Orwells isnt just their youth, their relative inexperience, or the surprisingly mature (yet thoroughly immature) music they make. Its a glorious combination of all these things. Nobody makes rock n roll sound so sweet, or so simple, which is (unfortunately) seems a rare combination these days. The fact that dizzying new summer party jam Other Voices features lines like take a drink, then lets make out, only makes it that much sweeter.
