‘Folk Punk’ is one of those catch all terms that’s been bandied around quite a lot in recent years and, personally, I find to be a little lazy and uninspired. More often than not it’s used to pigeonhole artists and records that contain an acoustic guitar and some semblance of punk rock ethics in place of more appropriate terms. In the case of Dave Hughes & The Renegade Folk Punk Band, however, this shoe fits and they wear it very well. Mixing modern punk, rock & roll and traditional folk, ‘In Death Do We Part?’ sees the band [...]
We spend a wholly inappropriate amount of time at gigs- missing all kinds of obligations, end up crawling through the next day exhausted, battered, and bruised. It's a lot of travel, standing in line, out of pocket expenses, and the occasional mediocre experience that leaves us cold. Then there are the times when you feel more alive than ever while shoved into a dive bar with a load of screaming strangers or a bearded man with an acoustic guitar makes you weep like a baby, having feelings you didn't know you were capable of. This is why we do what [...]
Cover Me counts down the best cover albums of the year. Read about them all, and listen to songs.
I know I waxed philosophical about the value of an album as a whole earlier this week but don't get me wrong- I treasure my iPod and it is jam packed with playlists with every theme under the sun. Including a "Best of..." for 2012. Here is the ten I've chosen from that ...pretty extensive list that has soundtracked my year. Melanie and Barlow contributed ten of their carefully cultivated choices each to help round it out and here's our official Best Tracks of 2012 . [Tiffiny] Apologies, I Have None - The [...]

© 2012 Emma Speakman If you take a trip in the wayback machine, you'll find that I've wanted to get Dave Hause in session for quite a while. I've been a fan of The Loved Ones frontman turned solo artist for a a while now, so it was great to have him sit in front of the camera and play a song for Loitering With Intent. Rather than a song of his own, Dave treated us to a cover of Richard Thompson's 'I Feel So Good' - a cover that sounds so far away from the [...]

Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) - © 2012 Greenland Photography Oh the Apollo, how I hate thee. For those unaware, the (O2) Apollo in Manchester is possibly the worst of all the larger venues this city has to offer. The floors are sticky, the staff are rude, the beer is flat and the sound isn’t great either. You think all of that would be forgotten by the time the gig started - and most of it is - but the thought still lingered as I watched Dave Hause take to the stage for the seventh (yes, [...]

© 2012 Oli Wilson It's been a pretty big year for Dave Hause. The Philly-born singer/songw riter and Loved Ones front man has been constantly on tour since the beginning of the year (and before that) and last week he took to the road with The Gaslight Anthem for a run of shows in the UK and Europe. His fourth time across the Atlantic this year, Hause is now playing to capacity crowds in support of the New Jersey natives and seems to be loving it. I chatted to Dave before the show in Manchester, covering 'Resolutions', [...]

If it had been any other lineup, I probably wouldn't have attended Chicago's Riot Fest 2012 - simply because of its location(s). For one, I loathe the Congress Theater. I'll never forget how their bathrooms look like set pieces from Seven or Saw , or how they let Man Man sound piss poor that one time, or when they closed coat check during a bitter cold New Year's Eve party. The latter which resulted in yours truly getting heat sores all over his chest, all from having to wear a leather jacket on the dance [...]

"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." -Willy Wonka Andrew Bird – “Give It Away” Just when you thought clowns were the creepiest part of a child's birthday party. Allow me to introduce, Pinata Man. Bat For Lashes – “Laura” Natasha Khan takes us backstage with a ballet-dancing transvestite in this beautifully shot new music video. Alright you perverts, time to stop gawking at that album cover now. Ben Kweller – “Jealous Girl” [...]
While it rekindles that same Jersey pride from previous releases, The Gaslight Anthem’s fourth album feels more important in a time when Americans especially need rousing anthems to get behind. 2012, Mercury Records 8.5 / 10.0 Springsteen comparisons come natural for The Gaslight Anthem. Like the Boss, the Gaslight [...]

Since announcing their move to Mercury Records, fans of The Gaslight Anthem have waited with baited breath to hear how the big time might affect their favourite New Jersey natives. Formerly the darlings of, LA-based indie label, SideOneDummy, the band have grown and changed with each release. And things are no different with record number four. The biggest of these changes is in the scale of the songs. No longer destined to fill basements and rock clubs, almost every track on this record feels designed for a bigger stage. With that comes a distinct loss of intimacy, though [...]

Metal fans are the nicest fans in the world. With a dedicated fan base that loses their shit when someone on stage even utters the name Eddie Trunk, it was almost as if the crowd at the inaugural Orion Music + More Festival were looking forward to an East coast metal festival to blow Mayhem and Warped out of the water. Different generations of fans littered the audience, from the parents who brought their kids to the show to the teens who made a quick stop at Hot Topic to pick up their first Metallica shirt before the [...]

Having conquered festivals and finding themselves inviting their hero - The Boss - onstage, The Gaslight Anthem seemed to lose their way on American Slang , their second album and the follow-up to breakthrough 2008 record The '59 Sound . Well they are back again with new album Handwritten which is due out 23rd July and new single 45 and to our ears it sounds like a bonafide Gaslight classic. Uptempo and extremely loud, its refreshing to hear a guitar band stick to what they know and love rather than [...]

Welcome back to another week of our Weekly Download where we hand-pick indie artists and unknowns from our inbox and offer them for free to spread the word about their music. This week, Zulu Winter is a sure shot if you're looking for some modern alternative with an electro-additives and a polished production behind them. Sure, Lily Allen is on here, but its all about Wize and the fantastic rework on this track. Soso is just that modest - her vocals are reminiscent of [...]
The Boss dropped by The Gaslight Anthem's end of the year holiday show last night at Asbury Park's Convention Hall. That's one hell of a X-mas gift! More pics to come.
We went to Hamburg for Reeperbahn Festival but there was no metal on the line-up so we saw the most punk rock football team in the world instead: FC St Pauli.
