
The Decemberists' The Hazards of Love doesn't care if you don't like opera. Daunting to start this multi-arced epic story, it very quickly rewards with such usual trademarks as harpsichord and frontman Colin Meloy's crystal-clear annunciations. Long-time listeners will be used to eccentric characters dotting the landscape, but newcomers might struggle with making maidens, shape-shifters, evil queens and rakes, dark forests and English folk music, into something coherent. Persevere. If at first it seems as if there is no stand-alone track, that's because there isn't. Isolation is not what this is about, and yet this album is singularly perfect. [...]
