Mr. Carl Newman (known as A.C. Newman in the context of his solo work) comes in with a gem for us today. Powered by a driving drum beat, and Newman's unmistakable wordplay and delivery, The Palace at 4 AM is certain to get a head bobbing, or foot tapping at the very least. The song can be found on Newman's second solo album Get Guilty , released on Matador Records on January 20th of this year. The album follows-up on Newman's debut solo release, the 2004 effort The Slow Wonder . When not [...]

Tonight's track comes from the Canadian singer/songwriter Carl Newman , and his solo project A.C. Newman . Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer can be found as the 3rd song on Newman's second solo album Get Guilty , released on January 20th, 2009. Canadian indie aficionados will likely recognize Newman as the primary songwriter for the Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers . If you haven't heard anything from The New Pornographers before, feel free to check out a song I posted from the band here . [...]
I love me some New Pornographers and I definitely dug AC Newman's solo album from earlier this year, Get Guilty . Above is his performance from last night on Letterman of Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer, which I feel suffers from a bit too much repetition. Better songs on the record, but this is the single, so there you go.
A.C. Newman's solo show at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room last night was better than the New Pornographers show last year at the Pageant. There; I said it. The differences between the concerts were small,... Continue reading "Show Review: A.C. Newman and the Broken West at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, Sunday, March 22" >

Walking into Lee's Palace on Wednesday night, it was all I could do to not walk right back out upon seeing four somewhat geeky-looking dudes on stage with the lead singer playing a ukulele. I find it hard to take ukulele rock seriously. I'm just prejudiced against ukuleles, I guess. It's a personal failing. I'll work on it, I promise. In this case, however, I was able to suppress my natural instincts and managed to sit back, get a beer from the bar, and patiently await AC Newman without charging the stage during Dent May & His Magnificent [...]
That's right! A to Z has a pair of tickets to give away to A.C. Newman's show on Sunday, March 22, at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room! All you have to do is comment with a valid email address with your ful... Continue reading "Win A Pair of A.C. Newman Tickets!" >
I know most people who read this blog are American, so you only have a faint idea of The New Pornographers. Like most Canadian bands, The New Pornographers are really 7 bands in one, featuring members from Swan Lake, Immaculate Machine, Maow, The Evaporators, Age of Electric, Limblifter, Destroyer, and Superconductor. AC Newman [Myspace], the [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

With 2008 starting to look smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror and 2009 now in full swing, we're sure that you've probably grown tired of some of the music you injected into your iPod last year. Since you may not get the itch each Tuesday to hit your local record shop for new tunes, I thought I'd use this week's mix tape to feature some new music that has already hit stores this year. So sit back, relax and take a listen... We kick things off with the Derek Trucks [...]

Picked up this album a couple of weeks ago mostly because I absolutely love The New Pornographers. Twin Cinema and the somewhat overlooked Challengers were both among the best albums of their respective years. I think it's easy to just call those albums, and this one, pop or power pop, and leave it at that. I think that is a little unfair and not a very apt title for Get Guilty. While it does have many hook heavy, pop-y elements, it's not simply pop, but very well crafted, if still upbeat songs. I think simply [...]

A.C. Newman is no stranger to those even with the slightest knowledge of the indie scene. He has been around since the '90s with his first band Superconductor but his real break came initially with Zumpano and especially at the start of the millennium with the acclaimed New Pornographers, where he's been the true leader ever since. After recording two albums with the Pornographers, Newman managed to release his debut solo album back in 2004 titled The Slow Wonder. In a similarly timely fashion, after a couple more albums with his superband, he is back with his sophomore solo outtake [...]

New Wax Allan Carl Newman, otherwise referred to as A.C., may be better known as the front man and principle songwriter in The New Pornographers but his 2004 solo full-length The Slow Wonder was just as worthwhile as anything in the New Pornographers catalog. Now Newman is back with Get Guilty , an album chalk-full of layered harmonies, which Newman's material seems to possess in spades. Get Guilty kicks off with "There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve," a catchy hodgepodge of piano, shimmering [...]

Danko Jones Just a little reminder, AC Newman 's excellent new solo record, Get Guilty , comes out today (01/20) on Matador and he's playing an in-store gig tonight at Virgin USQ with Nicole Atkins to give people a little taste of it. After you've bought Carl's album and had him sign it, you'll still have plenty of time to head on over to the Mercury Lounge to catch Canadian rockers, Danko Jones who are in town tonight to play [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars The majority of the listening world will know A.C. Newman by his other gig in New Pornographers . This new effort, released by Matador Records , isn't far off from the land of his pop-supergroup, especially when one looks back at an album like Challengers. From the minute "There are Maybe Ten or Twelve" takes off you can tell exactly the direction that this album is going to go. It's [...]

A.C. Newman Get Guilty Matador Records Release Date: 01.20.09 There is no question that A.C. Newman knows how to whip up some solid pop songs. He has a knack for witty lyrics, catchy hooks, and a pop mentally for orchestrating irresistibly and instantly accessible music. And on his latest solo effort, Get Guilty , the New Pornographers front man once again proves that he is the Canadian king of power pop. It's an album that is a solid listen from start to finish, jam [...]

There's a new live video for AC Newman 's insanely catchy "Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer" streaming right now over at Pitchfork.TV (and also embedded in this post). Just in case you forgot, Carl's new record, Get Guilty is coming out next Tuesday ( January 20 ), and he'll be playing an in-store gig that night at Virgin Union Square with New Jersey's own Nicole Atkins . AC Newman - "Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer" Flyer for the [...]

Vancouver's A.C. (Carl) Newman, of The New Pornographers is ready to release his latest album titled Get Guilty on January 20th. The album was recorded during the summer of 2008 at Brooklyn's Seaside Lounge with Phil Palazzolo and features drummers Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Mountain Goats) and Charles Burst, an array of strings, horns, and woodwinds, and vocalists Nicole Atkins and Mates Of State. The track There are Maybe Ten or Twelve is a fantastic alternative folk rock style track which will most likely be the first single off the album, already getting airplay on many indie and college radio stations [...]

My pals over at Insound just passed along this interesting tidbit. If you order an A.C. The term "power pop" gets tossed around a lot when referring to A.C. Newman and his band mates, the New Pornographers, but to lump Newman's latest solo effort, "Get Guilty," into this same category would do a huge disservice to the well-crafted and at times intricate collection of songs. Which is not to say the disc isn't as accessible as the Pornographer's last album, 2007's "Challengers," rather that the arrangements are simply more lavish, and the inspirations more complex. Songs about mischievous young gods (Thunderbolts), the 1967 film "Le Samourai" (Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer), and the catchiest [...]

Here's a couple AC Newman tracks from the upcoming Get Guilty and one from the Black Lips' 200 Million Thousand . Both albums will be out early in 2009. I was a little worried about Get Guilty based on the first couple songs to hit the net, but these two sound great. Photography by Uzume666777333 Well my friends, your boy Tsuru got hit with a tsunami last night by way of a stomach virus. Hit me like a ton o' bricks. Throughout the day, I was feeling kinda crappy in my stomach, but chalked it up to a little partying over the weekend, but man, when we left work, at first, I actually felt happy & good (you see, yesterday was one of those days where I REALLY didn't want to be at work). We headed across town to see a man about [...]
