Walking into Lee's Palace on Wednesday night, it was all I could do to not walk right back out upon seeing four somewhat geeky-looking dudes on stage with the lead singer playing a ukulele. Picked up this album a couple of weeks ago mostly because I absolutely love The New Pornographers. Twin Cinema and the somewhat overlooked Challengers were both among the best albums of their respective years. I think it's easy to just call those albums, and this one, pop or power pop, and leave it at that. I think that is a little unfair and not a very apt title for Get Guilty. A.C. Newman is no stranger to those even with the slightest knowledge of the indie scene. He has been around since the '90s with his first band Superconductor but his real break came initially with Zumpano and especially at the start of the millennium with the acclaimed New Pornographers, where he's been the true leader ever since. Newman and his band mates, the New Pornographers, but to lump Newman's latest solo effort, "Get Guilty," into this same category would do a huge disservice to the well-crafted and at times intricate collection of songs. Above is his performance from last night on Letterman of Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer, which I feel suffers from a bit too much repetition. Better songs on the record, but this is the single, so there you go.
