Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Hereâs managing editor Andrew Bonazelli⌠Yes, this is our Women in Metal issue. It doesnât exist to make us feel better about the fact that this happened, and yes, Iâm obviously talking [...]

The folks over at Bands In The Backyard partnered up with Lady Bang Beat for this video, which features Jurassic Shark of Girls Rock Philly.

Philadelphia five-piece Streetwalkers occupy a great space for lovers of late 80s / early 90s dream pop: they can drift all blissfully like Slowdive, and then wail and rumble like theyâre lost in Disintegration . Below, you can download the bandâs latest single, âSong Eightâ (this is one group of musicians that doesnât overthink its song titles), which was recorded this winter with versatile Philadelphia producer Jeff Zeigler. If its beguiling tones peak your interest, you can catch Streetwalkers in concert tonight â its playing an all-ages show at Studio 2424 , sponsored by Bands [...]

Girls Rock Philly celebrate the release of It Goes to Eleven , the 2011 Camper Compilation CD & 2011 Camp Showcase DVD today at Noon at Johnny Brendas . The CD release is the third compilation Girls Rock Philly has released. Tickets are $5.00 at the door and kids under five get in for free. Below, check out the video from this past summer's Girls Rock camp with the band Bass and Drums 3 (although there are five drummers!) performing "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways.

Woods FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 For a band that exists within the indie spectrum, Woods has no compunctions about wandering deep into jam-band territory. The Brooklyn-based quartet's lo-fi, psych/folk-pop is punctuated by extended solos; live, the band is more than willing to go beyond rehearsed material and venture into uncharted improvisations. As a result, seeing the band live is often a wholly different experience than listening to its recorded output. And [...]

This summer, Girls Rock Philly is giving 80 local aspiring female musicians ages 9â17 the opportunity to step from singing in front of their bedroom mirrors to the stage of World Cafe Live . The non-profit summer camp brought together girls from the greater Philadelphia area to learn to sing and play guitar, bass, and drums, building self-esteem along the way. The campers formed 15 bands, who are writing and rehearsing their own songs over the course of the week-long program. They also will have the chance to record a compilation CD in WXPNâs studios. [...]

Beth Warshaw-Duncan is the Founder and Executive Director of Girls Rock Philly and the Line Producer of WXPN's The World Cafe. âOh Bondage, Up Yoursâ is one of the first songs that campers hear when they come to Girls Rock . A lot of them think theyâre hearing something brand new. In our History Of Women In Music workshop, we show everyone X-Ray Spexâs Germ Free Adolescents ; many campers see themselves in the teenagers on the coverâespecially the one in braces. They laugh and hopefully feel more ready to see themselves [...]

Ian MacKaye âco-founder of Dischord Records , former member of Minor Threat and Embrace, current member of Fugazi (on indefinite hiatus) and The Evens, and all-around DIY iconâhas just been confirmed as the keynote speaker for the All-Ages Movement Project 's East Coast Summit. The event , which is being organized by Exotic Fever Records co-founder (and Trophy Wife drummer) Katy Otto, will be held at The Rotunda on Saturday, February 26th. The summit will feature "[a]n evening of panels, speakers, training, networking and live music designed for staff, [...]

As we mentioned this morning, tonight's must-see "Revolution Girl Style Again" panel discussion (simulcast via streaming video at The Rotunda) is immediately followed by a Girls Rock Philly! benefit show . The lineup features three local actsâ Trophy Wife , Cat Vet , and Slutever âas well as Providence, RIâs Whore Paint . I won't even bother trying to tone down my unbridled enthusiasm for tonight's discussion + concert one-two combo; February 8th has been circled on my calendar since the moment I first found out about the two events. Between the speakers, the [...]

The list for tonight's "Revolution Girl Style Again" panel discussion at The Kelly Writer's House was already close to filled by the time we posted about it a month ago ; since then, event organizers have been searching for a way to accommodate the many other people who want to attend the talk but can't fit into the small-capacity venue. Well, here's some great news for anyone who wasn't able to secure a seat in advance: The discussionâwhich features Bikini Kill/Le Tigre frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, Girls To The Front: The True Story [...]

Musically speaking, thereâs no one else quite like Attia Taylor in the Philly scene right now. The electro-pop artist (and Girls Rock Philly! graduate) deals in catchy, deconstructed audio collagesâbut what makes Attia unique is the joy she injects into a typically clinical and detached genre. Her songs bubble over with bliss, exhibiting a singular sense of discovery and wide-eyed wonderment that practically shouts, "Wow, look what I can do with all these sounds!" Hence, weâre spotlighting âWonder The Wonderful," a track from her most recent EP, Short Stories And Small Glories . (Both Short Stories [...]

This just in from Girls Rock Philly! (which, earlier this month, wrapped up its 2010 camp with a r ecord-release show at Johnny Brenda's): The music and mentoring nonprofit organization is now accepting applications for its second annual Ladies Rock Camp, which will take place at Freire Charter School next February, culminating in a showcase performance at Tritone on Monday, Feb. 21st. The tuition fee of $400 will pay for one girl to attend next summer's Girls Rock Philly! campâwhich we probably don't have to tell you is one of the most awesome initiatives in the [...]

Amos Lee performs 11/5 at Patriots Theater FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5 Amos Lee 's new album, Mission Bell , is set to drop on January 25, 2011. What's the best way to describe our feelings on the upcoming release? We tremble with delight? Wait with bated breath? Quiver with anticipation? Either way, the next two and a half months promise to be long ones. Thankfully, we can pass the time by continuing to post about Amos every time he sneezes. Amos Lee performs at 8 p.m. at Patriots Theater; [...]

An amazing lineup of music for an excellent cause tonight at Tritone when our friends at Sugar Town throw a benefit for the super cool Girls Rock Philly. Girls Rock Philly is an initiative to bring Philadelphia a girls-only, week-long summer day camp serving junior rockers ages 9-17. Led by a team of all female instructors & band coaches, girls in the program learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, make their own band merchandise, discover other women in rock & finesse their on-stage jump kicks.
