I am a big fan of progressive and psychedelic music - Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree - but never really researched it enough to get to know many more bands than what I've listed. However, I am tired of listening to the same old stuff, so I want to discover more bands from this genre. Help me, Captain Awesome! Anvith *** Anvith, Not a problem my awesome friend. I must admit, I've never actually heard of Porcupine Tree, but I am a huge [...]

Started thinking about this a few weeks ago and I realised it's been a really strong year for new releases – I could've named twenty albums very easily. On top of that I've recently picked up on a couple of records from this year in the last couple of weeks – the Wilco and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - ones both of which I'm pretty sure would've been on this list if I knew them a little better... So … Seven Great Records of 2011 Bad As Me – Tom Waits [...]

I'm a little apprehensive about writing this post about best gigs of the year, partly because I think I've seen less this year than many others but mainly because I seem to know a few people who seem to go to a mindboggling number of gigs. I know of a couple of people who are nearly into three figures for the year. Think about it, pretty much two gigs a week… {prostrates himself on the floor} But, anyhoo, for what's its worth here are seven cracking live experiences from this year. In no particular order… [...]

2011 - Seven WooHoos! Gloucester winning the Anglo-Welsh Cup – hugely devalued since its heyday in the Seventies, but silverware, goldarnit! Mad Men – a Christmas boxset from The Boy that I've ambled through in fits and starts all year. Stylish, complex and occasionally perverse. Gosh, those folk can smoke! Lionel Messi – 209 goals in 7½ seasons (including 100 in the [...]

Here's to Taking It Easy – Phosphorescent Pride saw arch finger-pointer Matthew Hauk and pals sound a bit Bon Iver-y, which was OK but 2010's follow up was a much more ballsy, countrified affair, with brass, slide guitars and riffs all over the shop –terrific value. I think I've already posted a video of my favourite track ( "God damn, Amanda, God damn it all"), so here's the opener – Bah bah badda ba badda bah! [...]

It's that time! Time to eat, drink, be merry and write some lists! If you've been following the Blog for a while, you'll have noticed that I approach the whole list-compiling thing with some trepidation but as the days move on, I get in to the spirit, and by the end, well… So, here goes: Seven Records I Should Own (and am a bit embarrassed that I don't) (yet…) In the past I think I've used this list to give a cursory [...]
Shrigley Forced To Speak With Others is an alias of David Shrigley, an artist who is also a man. He is known for his messy cartoon pocketbooks. Think an English Ivor Cutler with better ties to the art world. Both have that ability to see the world askance and the need to stay at one remove from it. Here's one side of a single he released in 2008. I must say, the art market puts even the collectible vinyl market to shame when it comes to pricing things. The 2x7" release from which this [...]

I'm still in recovery mode after my weird sickness bug this weekend, so I'm going to make this quick. I'm feeling a little bit better, thanks for asking. I spiked a bit of a fever last night but slept for almost 10 hours, and today just battled some sporadic chills and fatigue. I think I'll live. If I don't, oh well! It was fun while it lasted, right? Go read some other creep's blog. Happy birthday, mom. I hope you enjoyed your squirrel's paw earrings, made out of 100% pure squirrel's paw! You're gonna be the talk of [...]
This is one that has been on my radar for a long time, and although it has passed through my hands at work a few times I finally picked up a copy of it from a private collector today. In fact, I bought a handful of records this afternoon that I will soon be transferring to MP3 and sharing over the course of the next few weeks. Plus I've got all those records I shipped here from Jersey last week to share with you. Right now you're probably asking yourself, "Evan, why do you keep buying records? You can barely [...]
Joseph A. Morse, San Quentin Prison's Death Row, 1972. After nearly a decade of subsisting on valium, seconal, prison-made wine and a little heroin, I was introduced to LSD. My fellow condemned prisoners were a little reluctant to try the new chemical because of the gloomy environment, but I had practically been raised on death [...]
Quasi - "Repulsion" from the forthcoming album American Gong on Kill Rock Stars.

Currently touring in Europe with the original line up, Gong continue to amaze audiences with their musical tales of Pot Head Pixies, Gnomes, Zero The Hero and more. Going back to the beginning of the 'noughties' decade and Gong were continuing to tour worldwide on a regular basis. This recording is from the 9th September 2000 at the Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California. This is a full concert and features quite a lot of material from the 1970's era of the band. Gongs latest album '2032' was released in September [...]
MUSIC NEWS - The Steve Hillage Band is now confirmed as special guest on Gong's upcoming UK countrywide November UK tour. The run starts off at the Bristol O2 Academy on Thursday November 19th. This will be the first time since 1979 when guitarist Hillage will perform material from his renowned Steve Hillage Band solo albums - 'Fish Rising' (1975), ' L' (1976), 'Motivation Radio' (1977) and ' Green ' (1978). Watch Hillage and band performing the classic Hurdy Gurdy Man [...]

This is the classic line up of Gong performing live in Oslo, Norway back on the 15th December 1974. For the uninitiated Gong are a Franco-British progressive/psychedelic rock band formed by Australian musician Daevid Allen. Between 1973 and 1974, Gong, now augmented by guitarist Steve Hillage, released their best-known work, the "Radio Gnome Trilogy", three records that expounded upon the (previously only hinted at) Gong mythology, Flying Teapot , Angel's Egg , and You . In 1975 the band line began to alter and key members of the group [...]

Henry Cow (listen to In Praise HERE , sample any of their songs HERE ) are one of those bands that always get short shrift from just about everybody. Not as cool as Gong, not as hip as Can, not as weird as Faust and not near as popular as Neu! and Kraftwerk. If anything though, their relative obscurity lends them a certain credibility. While mod-prog heads worship Mars Volta and only skim the surface for MV's influences, great bands like Henry Cow and Soft Machine are waiting for those [...]
