Looking ahead, we see a good weekend for locally grown music(ians) on the horizon, with Gibsonia's Bearskin storming the Rex on Friday, then Good Night States * at Brillobox coming up against Greensburg native SAADI , who will be blowing in from NYC to Garfield Artworks on Saturday (playing with a "Lights," not to be confused with Lights ). Every once in awhile, I'll hear an album full of songs so surprisingly fresh yet familiar, the whole thing will feel like deja vú. Good Night, States has managed to produce an EP of such caliber, crafting six tunes with simple, familiar melodies that nonetheless manage to catch me off guard. The songs seem straightforward enough, but when acoustic guitar riffs are complimented by synthesizer blips, this small change transforms the nature of the entire song. Pittsburgh's Good Night, States just released a new EP "In the Impossible Tension" which serves as a follow-up to the band's 2008 full-length debut Short Films on Self-Control . While the sound of this EP is a departure from the full-band sounds of Short Films on Self Control , the shift is more evolutionary than a change in direction. This disc was recorded by singer/songwriter Steve Gretz and multi-instrumentalist Joe Tanner during the pair's tenure in Northern New Jersey.
